Deep Sleeper Prospect: Jeremy Rathjen, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers

Jeremy Rathjen - Mark Rebilas, USA Today Sports

Here is a deep sleeper prospect for your consideration on this Saturday afternoon: Jeremy Rathjen of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Here is my comment on him from the 2013 Baseball Prospect Book:

Jeremy Rathjen, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers
Bats: R Throws: R HT: 6-6 WT: 190 DOB: January 28, 1990

SLEEPER ALERT!! Rice University's Jeremy Rathjen was expected to be something like a third round pick in 2011, but he tore an anterior cruciate ligament and missed most of the spring. He came back healthy and effective in 2012 and had a fine campaign for Rice, hitting .329/.428/.525, but fell to the 11th round. As you can see, he was excellent in the Pioneer League (.324/.443/.500), demonstrating power, speed, patience, and a wRC+ of 149. He's a very good defensive asset in right field, and his makeup is considered a positive. Scouts have wondered if his big wingspan will make him vulnerable to inside pitches, but so far it hasn't been a problem. At age 23 Rathjen has to move quickly, but this wasn't just some non-athletic college slug beating up the Pioneer League: Rathjen has solid tools to go with his skills. Grade C+.

ADDITIONAL COMMENT:
As stated, it isn't unusual for a college senior to blow through the Pioneer League and at age 23, Rathjen has to move quickly. My guess is that he'll continue to perform well in A-ball; Double-A will be a sterner test.
