Johnny Giavotella Recalled

Second baseman Johnny Giavotella should be recalled today and is likely to be in the Royals’ lineup tonight when they face left-hander Jon Lester in the conclusion to a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox at Kauffman Stadium.

“He’s another right-handed bat,” general manager Dayton Moore said, “and we need another right-handed bat over the next several days with all of the left-handed pitchers we’re expecting to face.”

Moore said Giavotella is returning to be a right-handed option for manager Ned Yost and not necessarily to become the club’s regular second baseman.

“With our lineup right now,” Moore said, “we have (left-handers) Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Alex Gordon and Jarrod Dyson. That’s why (injured) Yuniesky Betancourt was so important for us – he gave us a right-handed bat with some power.”
