MOD Red Sox #2

Here is a list player that I think could be available for the first 3 picks.

Pitchers:

Zach Eflin, RHP, Hagerty HS, Fla – Has been one of the players with the most helium all year so perhaps he keeps rising but he fits what I’m looking for. Mid 90s fastball, with a nice change up for a HS kid, needs to refine his breaking pitch but has the ingredients to be a very good starter.

Andrew Heaney, LHP, Oklahoma State – Has been one of the best pitchers this spring. 1.65 ERA, 93 Innings Pitched, 62 Hits Allowed, 19 Walks and 109 Strikeouts. 88-94 MPH fastball with average-to-above avg secondary pitches. Probably doesn’t profile as top of the rotation starter but is a good bet to pitch in the big leagues and be at least a back end starter but with the upside he could be a 3.

Walker Weickel, RHP, Olympia HS, Orlando – Came into the year ranked in the top 10 but has had a tough spring; I’ve seen reports that say his delivery has gone backwards. Coming into the year his reports were that he throws in the low-to-mid 90s, with a curve that flashed plus and a change up that had a chance to be at least avg. Couple that with his frame and athleticism he profiled as a top of the rotation starter. He has regressed this spring but I think he fits what I’m looking for with this picks.

Lance McCullers Jr, RHP, Jesuit HS, Tampa – He is one of the most electric arms in the draft and is having a terrific spring but his delivery and stature have scouts projecting him as a reliever, a closer mind you, but I don’t see a fit here. If he was a sure fire starter, sure, but if he was that he would be a top 10/5 pick.

Matt Smoral, LHP, Solon (Ohio) HS – Tall lefty that was having a pretty good spring until a foot injury, that required surgery, ended his season. He throws in the low 90s, with his tallness that velocity plays up. Also throws a slider and change-up that will need more refinement. He’s not a finish product but with his size and raw ability he could be a dominant pitcher.

Ty Hensley, RHP, Santa Fe HS, Okla – Big right-hander with not a lot of physical projection left; Throws in the low-to-mid 90s with good secondary pitches which need refinement. Profiles as mid of the rotation starter with the upside for a little be more.

Hunter Virant, LHP, Camarillo HS, Cal – Thin lefty with a lot of physical projection left. His fastball is in the high 80s right now but with his physical projection you can dream on it. His secondary pitches are pretty strong especially for a HS kid that has been pitching for about a year.

Duane Underwood, RHP, Pope HS, Ga – One of the youngest pitchers of his class, Underwood has already touched the mid 90s. His curve-ball needs work but it has flashed plus at times and like most HS pitchers his change-up is more of a show me pitch. Has a strong muscular body with a sound delivery, with more refinement of his secondary pitches he could be a top of the rotation starter.

Hitters:

Victor Roache, OF, Georgia Southern – Probably has the most power in the draft but after sustaining a broken wrist its up in the air where he goes. He had problems with strikeouts but he was also patient and displayed a ton of power. On defense he’s probably a LF but he has enough bat for the position.

Stryker Trahan, C, Acadiana HS, La – Trahan has a rare power-speed combination for a catcher which could make a team skip the catching part and move him to a less demanding position to maximize the bat. He shows a lot aptitude at the plate which could help him make a quick transition to the pros. Behind the plate Trahan has all the ingredients to make it work including strong hands and a good throwing arm.

Addison Russell, SS, Pace HS, Fla – Russell has seen his stock on the rise again this spring after it tumbled in the summer circuits. He has slim down and looks more athletic than he did in the summer which has improved his ability to stay in the middle infield. At the plate Russell is a patient hitter who can drive the ball and shows advance knowledge of the strike zone.

Tyler Naquin, OF, Texas A&M – Has been getting the tweener tag because he probably doesn’t have the power to profile in a corner but he shows the ability to hit for avg and hit balls in the gap. He has played RF for A&M and Team USA but he may have the raw ability for CF so if he goes in the 1st round a team will try him there.

Joey Gallo, 3B/1B, Bishop Gorman HS, NV – Gallo’s stock has been sliding do to concerns that he strikeout too much but he has one of the best power bats in the HS class. He has been getting more positive reviews as a pitcher but I think he’ll go out as a Hitter first see what you have with the option of pitching to fall back on.

Trey Williams, 3B, Valencia HS, Ca – At the start of the year Williams was getting top 10 consideration but he has been slipping a bit but I still love what he brings. He’s young for the class, has baseball bloodlines and one of the best power bats in entire class. He struggled a bit to start the year and during the summer circuit but has picked it up lately.

C.J. Hinojosa, SS, Klein Collins HS, TX – Hinojosa dislocated his shoulder and missed most of his senior season. Prior to the injury Hinojosa was lauded for his hitting ability and patience at the plate. He hits balls in the gaps and has room to grow into more power. Hinojosa plays a good SS but may outgrow it a moved to 2nd base or 3rd base but the bat is what will carry him. Hinojosa is also one of the youngest players in the draft as he will be still 17 at the time of the draft.
