The First Year Player Draft will be held in Secaucus, New Jersey home of MLB Network. The MLB draft has been televised since 2007 with ESPN but is now one of the main events of MLB Network. Last year only one player made it to Secaucus as most college players where with their college teams in regionals or preferred to stay at home in fear of the dreaded slide. Larry Greene accepted the invitation and he lasted all the way to the sandwich round until the Phillies selected him. Other player that have attended the draft include Mike Trout, Josh Vitters, Phillippe Aumont, Aaron Hicks and Ross Detwiler.
This year five players have accepted invitations to Secaucus and will be live in studio when they find out where they are going. The five players are:
Carlos Correa, SS, Puerto Rico HS - The best Puerto Rican prospect in a long time, Correa is set to become the highest drafted player in the history of Puerto Rico. There is a lot of buzz around him and he looks like he might be in play for the #1 overall pick and might not get past Seattle at 3.
Courtney Hawkins, OF, Texas HS - Hawkins has one of the best power bats in the draft and could find a home in the top 10 . In any case he is a sure bet to go in the top 15 picks.
Gavin Cecchini, SS, Louisiana HS - Cecchini comes from a baseball family as his dad and mom run his HS baseball team and has a brother, Garin Cecchini, who is one of the better prospect in the Red Sox system. He's a very polished HS player and should go in 10-20 range unless he finds a taker in the top 10.
Andrew Heaney, LHP, Oklahoma State - Heaney had one of the better season in college baseball this year and that has allowed him to move up draft boards. He should fit in the middle of the 1st round for a team looking for college pitching.
Clint Coulter, C, Washington HS - Coulter is a big physical player and as you might expect power is his calling card. He has been slated as a late 1st, sandwich round possibility for some teams and late buzz was that the Brewers were looking at him with one of their 1st round picks.
Congratulations to all and lets hope the dreaded slide doesn't occur.
