So this is the discussion thread for the Giants 2nd round pick. To review the discussion on the first pick, the thread is here: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2012/5/8/3007347/mod-san-francisco-giants-1
The Giants pick 84th, so there is going to be all sorts of grumbling while favorites get popped. However, instead of bitching about Brian Sabean's love of $5MM LOOGYS that would have netted us a sweet supplemental pick somewhere around #50, lets get creative and pick out a nice list of candidates to grab.
2 Comment Starters: First, here is John Mayo's 80-90, for the hell of it: Skye Bolt, Preston Tucker, CJ Hinojosa, Tyler Gonzales, Martin Agosta, Tony Renda, Austin Maddox, Nick Williams, Austin Dean and JO Berrios.
I love my middle infielders, Tony Renda on the board looks good to me. I doubt very much Martin Agosta is still available but I think he would be a fine pick. Preston Tucker would fit right in the MO of college OFs John Barr has demonstrated.
Baseball America releases a new top 100 sometime today. We can post that up and discuss it.
Here is Fla-Giant's list of Second Rounders and downward, I think this is a good place to start as well:
Some more names to consider in rounds 2 & 3...In alphabetical order:
Alex Bregman: SS/2B, RHH, Albuquerque Baseball Academy, NM (could be a steal at #84 if he might sign)
Damien Carroll: RHP, King George HS, VA (raw basketball player, but has been touching 95 mph this spring)
Tim Cooney: LHP, Wake Forest Univ. (erratic spring, but he has a good 4-pitch mix with a fastball sitting 90-92 mph)
D.J. Davis: CF, LHH (throws RH), Stone HS, Wiggins, MS (speed merchant who has been flying up a lot of draft boards)
Nolan Fontana: SS LHH (throws RH), Univ. of Florida (great instincts and batting eye – and best college defensive SS available)
Eric Hanhold: RHP, East Lake HS, Tarpon Springs, FL (another tall HS sleeper that has touched 95 mph this spring)
Kurt Heyer: RHP, Univ. of AZ (has scuffled this year, but he likely has the stuff to make it into the backend of a MLB rotation)
D.J. Hicks: 1B, LHH (throws RH), Univ. of Central Fla.(poor man’s C.J. Cron who hit well on the Cape)
Chad Hollingsworth: RHP, Robinson HS, Waco, TX (big ol’ hoss of a kid with a heavy FB in the 91-93 range)
Pat Light: RHP, Monmouth Univ., NC (K’d 15 batters in a game last week – has 91-93 FB that consistently touches 95)
Peter O’Brien: C, RHH, Univ. of Miami (One of the top 3 college power hitters available)
Nick Petree: RHP, Missouri State Univ. (Pierce Johnson’s teammate – has not allowed an earned run in last 64.1 innings)
Dane Phillips: C, LHH (throws RH), Oklahoma City Univ. (poor man’s Mike Napoli – his hit tool is fringe-plus)
Alec Rash: RHP, Adel-Desoto-Minburn HS, Adel, Iowa (another HS basketball star who’s future is on the mound – mid-90s FB)
Jonathan Walsh: SWH (throws RH), LF, Univ. of Texas (Giants drafted him in 18th round of 2009 draft – fimally showing results)
Max White: LHH, OF, Williston HS, Williston, FL (an athletic and speedy sleeper who has started to hit for power this spring)
