Javier Baez Injured...

Shortstop Javier Baez, the top prospect in the Chicago Cubs' systelm, was injured Saturday night while playing for the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League.

The injury, a broken thumb on his left hand, knocks Baez out of the remainder of the AFL season, although the Cubs are hopeful he will recover enough to see some action in the Puerto Rico Winter League in December.

It's been a mixed bag of sorts for Baez to date in the AFL; his four homers tied him for the league lead with Brock Kjelgaard (Brewers) and his sixteen RBI gave him the league lead by four, yet both his BA and OBP had him in the bottom dozen among the league qualifiers.

He'd also struggled defensively; he made four errors in four games at third base, and had committed five in ten games at shortstop. His nine errors gave him the league lead by three over the Braves' Edward Salcedo and is just one fewer than the ten committed by the Salt River Rafters as a team.

As of now, the AFL has not announced a replacement for Baez' roster spot with Mesa, or for the West squad in this Saturday's Rising Stars game.
