Campos and Noesi

Help me anlayze the Yanks / Mariners blockbuster trade. The two throw ins are hardly that. Both have a great chance to be quality MLers. One has a huge ceiling and has never pitched beyond short season ball. The other made his debut but is thought of as a #5 starter type. I am wondering which team sought to add the extra two guys. Who would you rather have? Which team pushed for the extra 2 guys?

I knew you'd say this

. . and I don’t disagree, as a rule. I saw Campos last year in person and i really like him. That siad, i think the mariners probably asked for the final two pieces here.

Noesi looks for all the world like the next Armando Gallarraga here and that is a cheap, servicable and, importantly – big league ready – starter for the M’s the next couple of years.

It’s not always just a matter of “who would yourather have”, long term.

Noesi has value

I’m not saying that he doesn’t. But that value is as more of a back of the rotation arm. I’d much rather bet on the elite arm.

Campos - could he spin anything?

did his offspeed at least flash plus? All the reports were glowing about the FB. But I haven’t heard anything about how his offspeed has developed. He is a long ways away but I would like to see some development in this regard.

I saw a good curveball

. . but he threw fastballs, I’d say, 85/90 percent of the time when I saw him. I didn’t see a change. When I’m at a game with friends I am better at looking at an overall feel for a pitcher as an athlete, his delivery, and his aggresiveness and explosiveness. I was impressed with how easy he appeared to throw hard – touched 95 on the Everett gun which is a very fair stadium gun. I’ve heard rumors of him throwing harder but, he didn’t on the night I saw him. I wouldn’t be surprised though becuase he is free and easy

Not even close

Campos by leagues and leagues. Noesi simply is the kind of arm that is eminently replaceable, and which has next to no trade value.

Like all things it depends

For a team like the Yankees, which doesn’t need present starting help that much (or did, but was able to replenish it not going to the farm system), I’d rather a Campos. For a time like the Mariners, which could use an extra decent starter in the short term, I might very much rather have a Noesi

Agree completely. I think Noesi will surprise some people this year. Campos has the potential to be more than Noesi, but it is still a long journey ahead for him. The need for patience means a team like the Yankees are a better fit.

I agree that people are underestimating Noesi

SPs with 4.02 xFIP don’t grow on trees. It’s true that he only did that in relief, but considering his record in AA and AAA, him matching that in the rotation seems like a reasonable, if even conservative projection, even before one considers how he might do in Safeco Park.

also

the complete lack of risk aversion for the Yankees

means that they only need to worry about maximizing EV

most other teams don’t have that luxury, and need to pay a premium for higher probability

thanks for this

I suddenly feel a lot better about that addition to the deal.
