Catricala en fuego

Vincent Catricala 2-3 with a 2B and another HR tonight. I have him at .423/.484/.900 with 4 2Bs and 6 HRS over his last 8 games.

Count Chocula

just has to be this guy’s nickname.

awfully darn impressive, being in Petco will only help his game I would think

I think he could be a solid #2 in San Diego

I think he could be a solid #2 in San Diego

Livian Hernandez could probably pull that off.

Nolan Arenado

1-4, HR (20), RBI (120)

Capping off a great season.

Alanna Rizzo is my dream girl.

Fantastic

He doesn’t walk much (or K) but his line speaks for itself. I think he has a little more upside than given credit for by many (that is to say I think he could be special bat at 3b).

It will be interesting to see how Nolan Arenado fares in the Texas League. I have a feeling he’ll do fine (call it a hunch).

Johnny Singleton

Weird line-

0-0, 2 SF, 2 BB, HBP.

by kyuss94 on Sep 4, 2011 12:39 AM EDT reply actions

At only 20 Singleton should probably start next season in Lancaster and if he

continues to show improvement then move him to AA. No need to rush this kid whatsoever.

"This is a simple game, you throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the the ball, you got it?!"

by StrosSouth on Sep 4, 2011 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Why?

There’s no reason for him to repeat high-A. It’s not rushing him, he’s performing well. I don’t like the idea of sending him to Lancaster at all.

by Jeff Reese on Sep 4, 2011 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, I think he's ready to hold his own at AA

I doubt he blows up there at age 20, but he should still post a solid line relative to his age. He probably could have followed a Freddie Freeman path and had a couple hundred plate appearances at AA ball at the end of this year and been okay, but I can understand the Astros taking it slower than that.

Still, don’t see any reason in his performance to hold him back next year.

jean segura

milb doesn’t list any stats
baseballamerica says segura is UNaffliated

Mistake, right? Too good for anaheim to just release?

by tuna411 on Sep 4, 2011 1:20 AM EDT reply actions

BA....

lists many players as ‘unaffiliated’ for some reason. Doesnt mean anything other than BA hasnt updated everything in their players database. Segura certainly hasnt been released and will be playing as the Angels’ rep in the AFL. CAnt speak for MiLB but Segura already has resumed playing in the minors.

by rhd on Sep 4, 2011 1:31 AM EDT up reply actions

his brutal season has turned at least passable.

by Alfamale on Sep 4, 2011 2:00 AM EDT up reply actions

With his D and improvement at the plate I would say more than passable

We don’t know what he will be as a hitter, but he has made some changes that makes me think there is real improvement and not a Vegas mirage.

Wilmington vs. Frederick

Went to this game today. Machado (SS) and Schoop (2B) played for Frederick; not much prospect-wise for Wilmington. Schoop (pronounced ‘scope’) went 1-4 and Machado went 0-4 and K’ed 3 times. Didnt notice anything particularly noteworthy about either one, except that Machado has a very confident, take-charge sort of demeanor on the field.

FWIW, Wilmington wore the most hideous uniforms I’ve ever seen. But Wilmington has a very nice park.

Congrats to him…… that’d out to do wonders to boost is confidence going into 2012 and likely the Eastern Lg.

A Trivia Question?

That’s 2 off Lincy right? The only player to hit 2 HR off Lincy in the same season was Marcus
Thames back in ’08 (both in the same game). Goldy is the first player to take Lincy deep in different starts during the same season.

the long ball obsession. How was his bat speed on the two strikeouts? lol

by blackoutyears on Sep 4, 2011 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I long for a day

Without hearing about ‘strawmen’ & ‘bat speed’. There’s always tomorrow I suppose.

by Matt0330 on Sep 6, 2011 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I long for a day

where Goldy’s boosters restrain themselves from going apeshit over every homer while he’s posting a ~33% strikeout rate. ;-)

by blackoutyears on Sep 6, 2011 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Xander

is really intriguing. but that .259 BA and .324 OBP is a bit worrisome. However, all the scouting reports indicate he’ll hit for a high average when he gets fully acclimated to the American game.

by apoxonbothyourhouses on Sep 4, 2011 7:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Disagree

.259 and .324 do not worry me based on his age/experience relative to the competition. I actually think it is pretty good as opposed to worrisome.

by ROBERTS04 on Sep 4, 2011 8:02 AM EDT up reply actions

fair enough

didn’t I, though, say that with the second part of my post?

by apoxonbothyourhouses on Sep 4, 2011 8:04 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't know.

I was only talking about whether or not .259 and .324 is a solid performance for Xander.

by ROBERTS04 on Sep 4, 2011 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Hard to see how

a ~.260 average (which is up 25 or 30 points from a month ago btw) is a problem for an 18-year-old in the Sally League with no minor league experience below that level. The walk rate has held relatively steady while the strikeouts have come down each month too, and his IsoP would be excellent for a Rookie Ball player his age. The only worrisome thing here is that he’s a teenager, and anything can happen between the SAL and the majors.

How does Xander rank

more 9/3

Jake Marisnick 2-4, 2B

Mike Olt 1-3, HR, BB

Christian Yelich 1-3, and 1-3, HR in game two.

Mesoraco also doubles in his first at bat as a PH, lined a shot off the bottom of the wall.

by notsukao on Sep 4, 2011 4:50 AM EDT reply actions

That Mesoraco doubel was a laser

He’s worked to tone down the uppercut in his swing the last two years and he’s able to get to, and punish, pitches left up in the zone.

Eovaldi

Pitched around some control issues in his last start of the year 6IP 3H 1R 1ER 5BB 5K. Hasn’t hurt his chances to contend for a BoR spot next spring.

Matt Adams

2 for 4 with home run #32. Nice game after an 0 for 16 skid.

by blackoutyears on Sep 4, 2011 1:03 PM EDT reply actions

Solid year

Matt Adams had a really good AA campaign (jumped right over the FSL) & he reminds me a bit of Jerry Sands as far as backstory goes. Similarly to my boy Jerry, I’m fairly certain that ‘lively debate’ will suround Adams’ prospect status in a similar fashion this offseason & next year.

by Matt0330 on Sep 6, 2011 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions

If you haven't

read the comments section on some of the Cardinal blogs discussing Adams you should check it out. Acrimonious doesn’t do it justice. Though, considering your feelings about the Goldschmidt debate you may want to avoid it.

3 for 5 with two doubles and a homer. Big year, even by Cal League standards.

2 for 5 with a homer. August saw some adjustments and he started to pile up some more XBH after some struggles right after promotion.

bad-bodied

So you’re not ordering the swimsuit calendar this year I take it…

by blackoutyears on Sep 4, 2011 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we can all bypass any swimsuit calendar from WV!

But I do think Vince Belnome deserves a bit more attention than he’s gotten. All the kid does is hit.

by realitypolice on Sep 5, 2011 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

And, incidentally, I mean that in both the positive and negative senses.

Positive: He consistently knocks the snot out of the ball at the plate.
Negative: He really has nothing else going for him as a baseball player. Even compared to the rest of the Padres’ system!

by realitypolice on Sep 5, 2011 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Totally agree

If SD had a Moneyball book come out, Belnome would be their Jeremy Brown. So, he can’t play 2B at all?
