he is looking really toolsy. The strikeouts are a little high but I love the walk rate and he is showing some power. Also he hasn’t had a CS yet!!!!!!!

A- is pretty aggressive IMO. I would give him a solid B/B+. He still has tons of potential.

I’m not ready to slap an A- on him, but I tend to be stingy with my A grades.

where do you have him in your top 100’s?

by nmr123321 on Aug 9, 2011 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I had him at 57

That list was made about a month and a half ago and included 2011 draftees.

by Jeff Reese on Aug 9, 2011 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Look at Marisnick's BB/K since his AS break

He’s cut the K’s down a lot and his walk rate is up. Top 25 prospect for me and could be a star.

by Bravesin07 on Aug 9, 2011 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Top 25 including 2011 draftees?

That’s a bit aggressive. Is your name Keith Law?

by RynoRooter on Aug 10, 2011 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup

He’s doing everything a 20 year old could do in the MWL which is tough to hit in.

by Bravesin07 on Aug 10, 2011 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Marisnick or Gose?

They’ve definitely got two outfielders who have made quite a leap this year.

by Galt on Aug 9, 2011 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Not sure I agree that Gose has made a leap

He’s been pretty much the same guy he’s always been.

by RynoRooter on Aug 9, 2011 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s improved every aspect of his game while moving up a level. His advanced offensive stats (wOBA) are right there with what Lawrie did in AA last year.

by metafour on Aug 9, 2011 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

His walk rate is good, SB% has improved, he is hitting for more power so he’s made good strides. Obviously the K’s aren’t that good but I think a lot of that has to do with the fact Jays have turned him loose a little bit to develop some more power and he is doing it.

Keep in mind he is just 20 so he’s very young for AA and that’s a tough place to hit. Marisnick and Gose are the same age and Marisnick is 2 levels lower than him.

He hasn’t made an outstanding leap or anything crazy like that but he’s improved a lot.

by Sniderlover on Aug 9, 2011 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

He might have made some minute improvements

but none of it jumps out. I guess I am arguing semantics, as “quite a leap” to me means some serious improvement. He is almost exactly the same player he was last year in Dunedin.

2010: .255/.357/.426, 25.9% K rate, 11.6% BB rate, .339 BABIP

2011: .260/.353/.409, 25.4% K rate, 11.0% BB rate, .343 BABIP

I guess he has made good strides in being more efficient as a base stealer, up to 77% from 64%.

by RynoRooter on Aug 10, 2011 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

That was only a sample size of 27 games. If you look at his High A numbers in Phillies, they are very different

by Sniderlover on Aug 10, 2011 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

you're right about that, but two things

1) He was a good prospect who deserved the recognition he’s getting this year, last year. Gose has been underrated for a long time now, it’s just a course correction. We’ll see how he ends up handling AAA next year, as I think that tends to be the real test for elite athletes getting by on their tools. AA tends to be a better test for guys who have gotten by more on skills than tools.

2) There is a VERY big difference between one statistical line in A ball and the same statline in AA. This gets missed sometimes, but if a player maintains his numbers going from one level to the next higher level the next year, that’s a reflection of skill growth.

by mrkupe on Aug 10, 2011 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm just not a fan of Gose

He’s a great guy to have pre-arb, but after that, not so much. A slightly better Carlos Gomez to me.

by RynoRooter on Aug 11, 2011 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not sure about that

There’s still a pretty large gap between what he is and what he can be down the line, but unlike a lot of players with a similar profile Gose has shown the makings of a very diverse skillset.

I never cared much for Gomez. He was tall and fast and not much else.

by mrkupe on Aug 11, 2011 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Marisnick for me

Projects for more power, controls the strike zone better.

by CaptainCanuck on Aug 9, 2011 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

you have to remember that marisnick is in low-a, and gose is in double a. and they’re basically the same age.

Some other early lines

Ryan Lavarnaway – 2/5, 2 HR (up to 15), 3 R, 3 RBI. Cooled lately, but this certainly helps.

Ryan Kalish: 2/4, 2B, R, BB

Destin Hood: 3-4, 2 HR (10, 11 on year). Having a nice campaign in the Carolina League.

Bryce Brentz— 1 for 4, 2B, R, RBI, BB

Derek Dietrich- 1/4, K

by Matt0330 on Aug 9, 2011 4:07 PM EDT reply actions

And Kalish is in Triple-A now, right?

I’m hoping he comes back strong. So far so good.

by blackoutyears on Aug 9, 2011 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep

What a terrible break that injury was for Kalish though. Reddick has moved back ahead of him on the depth chart as a result.

by Jeff Reese on Aug 9, 2011 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Reddick

Yeah, he’s benefited no doubt. I’m hoping Kalish can either regain the role or work himself into trade bait. I’ve been baffled by Reddick’s hitting 100 points better in the majors than in Triple-A (almost 200 point jump in BABIP!) so I’m waiting to see if he cools down. The power seems legit.

by blackoutyears on Aug 9, 2011 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think Kalish has the problem of being trade bait

What might hurt him, though, is that the Red Sox probably aren’t trading him for any less than full value (and maybe value on top of that). He might just be stuck until something opens up on the team.

by mrkupe on Aug 9, 2011 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't perceive being trade bait as a problem,

more as an escape clause if the team gets married to Reddick. Ellsbury and Crawford aren’t going anywhere, and they’ve got Darnell McDonald to kick around as a 4th OF. Considering the issues with the rotation, Kalish could be a big part of a trade for a starter, or Reddick could. Either way, some sort of trade probably needs to occur.

by blackoutyears on Aug 10, 2011 8:50 AM EDT up reply actions

my point is

They’ll probably want to make a trade, yes, but the Red Sox have historically over-valued their own players in trade negotiations. They haven’t under-sold on anybody, especially young players, so unless somebody is willing to give up a premium piece, Kalish has to hope for A) an injury B) Reddick crapping the bed C) somebody getting desperate for an unproven outfielder who lacks a true outfield position or D) an attractive long-term lease in Pawtucket.

by mrkupe on Aug 10, 2011 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions

And my point is,

a trade would not be a “problem” for him. You might have stated it better as “I don’t think Kalish has the luxury of being trade bait”. The verbiage doesn’t mesh with the thesis directly above.

by blackoutyears on Aug 10, 2011 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

And as for "they haven't under-sold for anybody",

I seem to remember Epstein sending Arroyo to the Reds for Wily Mo Pena, which worked out fantastically. Yes, one trade, but as Theo’s reasoning at the time was that they had a surplus (in that case pitching) from which to deal, the circumstances are not dissimilar. I have no strong feeling on the possibility either way, but it’s pointless to try to and predict with your implied degree of certainty whether or not Kalish (or Reddick, or someone else) will be untradeable due to some paralysis on the part of the FO.

At the very least they sold pretty low on Hanley

Though Lowell turning from contract dump into huge part of a WS winning team did a lot to make up for it

by nixa37 on Aug 10, 2011 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe a little bit

But he was still VERY highly regarded (those that didn’t like him were generally the statistically minded), and Josh Beckett was a big fish.

by Jeff Reese on Aug 10, 2011 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Hanley for Beckett

is one of the better prospect “dare” trades in recent memory. Both teams have clearly benefited. Lowell shouldn’t have been a surprise and I’m not sure why people seemed to take the 2005 season as a sign he was toast. I’m still blown away by the fact that the Yankees seemed to have little idea what they had in him. I wonder how many people even remember Ed Yarnall.

I forgot that Anibal went to FLA in that trade too. That helps even things up a bit.

correct

it’s 405’ to center – and I did mean over the fence, not beyond. It hit the huge batters eye just beyond the fence, I’m approximating about 20’ above the outfield fence.

by spidurfan on Aug 10, 2011 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Well you responded to the post about the 480' shot saying "I saw it"

That’s why I got confused. I guess you meant the HR from the original post? If it “only” hit 20 feet above the wall it probably still wasn’t close to 450. People really underestimate how quickly balls are falling at the end of their flight.

Ramon Morla

Went 2-for-4 with two homers and a K. After a dreadful showing in the MWL, he’s somewhat righted the ship back in short-season ball.

Had a chance to drop in on a Yakima-Everett game as part of a trip to WA last week. He certainly looks the part at the plate and has a nice short swing path. Defensively, I was totally underwhelmed… his first step was very slow and his actions were choppy. It was hard to get a read on his arm because the field in Yakima is configured such that when the 3B throws, 1B has to look directly into the sun. The first play he had, he rifled a throw that the first baseman literally never saw and ultimately dove out of the way of… after that, he was too busy thinking about sunlight and angles to cut one loose.

Other quick observations from that game:
Jabari Blash is a TOOLSHED! He legged out a pair of triples. In each case it seemed like he took about four strides to get from second to third. Fun to watch him run. His timing mechanism at the plate is a little early and I didn’t see him get his hands through in a way he’ll probably need to on better fastballs, but man, it’s easy to see why he can get scouts to dream on him. He took a very good walk in a situation where it would be easy to flail a bit. Also had a nice throw to the plate from the outfield…

Jordan Shipers was throwing garbage. Fastball had little life and was 86-87. Secondaries were meh. Very underwhelmed after some of the first-ish person stuff I’d heard.

The Yakima lineup was completely uninteresting.
On the mound, their reliever Mike Blake was what Shipers was supposed to be, a short lefty with good velo and movement on his fastball. 4Ks and a couple of weak grounders in 2.2 innings of work. Probably not much of a story there, but it’s the closest thing to interesting I saw from their roster.
