Rays Shadow Draft V. 2

A little late for this but here is my 12 round Ray's draft 10 days before the deadline. I did one on June 9 that was a BPA draft which I will track as well.

My rules: Following the signing deadline, I will choose which of my picks I will sign based on the budget restrictions below. If a player does not sign in RL, I can not sign him. I will be limited by the Rays signing budget as best as I can calculate from rounds 1-12. If I sign fewer players than the Rays sign, I will penalize my available budget by $25K/man. The amount that I will debit my budget will be either the actual cost of the signed prospect or 100% of slot, whichever is higher.

I tried to rely only on public info prior to June 6 to determine signability status.

Here is my 2011 Rays Draft:

24 1 COF Mahtook, Mikie R COL

31 1 C Susac, Andrew R COL

32 1 OF Goodwin, Brian L JC

38 1 CF/RF Bradley Jr., Jackie L COL

41 1 P Osich, Josh L COL

42 1 SS Story, Trevor R HS

52 1 P Boyd, Hudson R HS

56 1 SP Meo, Anthony R COL

59 1 SP Garvin, Grayson L COL

60 1 P Lopez, Jorge R HS

75 2 LF/1B Dickerson, Alex L COL

89 2 COF/1B Westlake, Aaron L COL

119 3 RP Zych, Toni R COL

150 4 SP Lowell, Charlie L COL

180 5 SS/2B Evans, Phil R HS

210 6 SP Kukuk, Cody L HS

240 7 RP Moore, Navery R COL

270 8 SP Smith, Burch R COL

300 9 3B Buechele, Garrett R COL

330 10 1B Tucker, Preston L COL

360 11 SS/3B Greene, Tyler R HS

390 12 P McCreery, Adam R HS

Just trying to figure out if public info on ability and signability (Sickels, BBA, KLaw, etc) is enough to hang in there with the pros. I of course went with the Rays Draft because of the volume of picks available. This is of course a long term project but early feedback is welcome.

I missed one item

Osich had bad velo in his 2 starts prior to the draft. I am swapping Andrew Chafin for him.

I need a crosschecker.

No.

The other ones will add up though.

it's Evans, Kukuk, Tucker, Greene, and the last guy...

first four rounds are pretty realistic, i think.

Mahtook

Can anyone tell me what this guys ceiling/upside is? 20/20 player? How good is he

Mahtook

I think his ceiling is 20/20. And for a college guy, there is more disagreement that usual about his ability to hit his potential.

I have read questions about both his power and speed (more ?s about his power). I’d be thrilled with one of either 20. If he keeps his speed then his value in CF is enhanced. If his power comes through, his hit tool will make him an occasional all star.

i know it's hard since no pro data

but how would you compare him to some current prospects right now? what do you think he’ll have to show to be rated higher? more power or speed (sounds like with you if he shows either he’ll be happy)…with a good (not amazing or world class, just very solid) debut do you think he would be a top 50 prospect? a top 100 prospect? or is he not toolsy enough for statistics to shoot him up the boards?

Comp

Maybe Joe Benson (Twins). Right now, I don’t see him as a top 100 guy at all but he could be a top 30 guy if he hits his ceiling.

Signed them all but Goodwin, Tucker, and McCreery

…for $11.5M. I gave Mahtook $100K more than the Rays because I signed him at slot at #24. Meo also got a smaller bonus in my world for signing for slot at #56 for $643,500.

The Rays spent $11.3 on the same picks but didn’t sigh their 5th rounder which which I am sure was offered at least slot money. I get supplemental pick 32A in next year’s draft for Goodwin.

Very impressed with Friedman landing Guerreri for $1.6M. I thought he would go $1M higher. I was counting on that $$$!!!

I was still able to go way over slot to grab Evans and Kukuk just as the Rays did with Goeddel and Eiermann.

Can’t understand wht Preston Tucker did not sign. Not happy with that.

The Rays are younger signing 9 HS and 11 College guys. My Rays signed 6 HS and 13 COL.

Very different looking at the draft with the constraints of a budget. I highly recommend it.

V. 1 Best Player Available on the Rays Budget

I also put together what was just about a best player available during the June draft. Here is how that one turned out:

1. Taylor Guerreri signed at $1,600,000
1. Mikie Mahtook signed at $1,150,000
1. Daniel Norris signed at $2,000,000
1s. Josh Bell Not Signed at $5,000,000
1s. Howard Dillon signed at $1,850,000
1s. Andrew Susac signed at $1,100,000
1s. Austin Hedges Not Signed at $3,000,000
1s. Anthony Meo signed at slot at $643,500
1s. Derek Fisher Not Signed
1s. Grayson Garvin signed at $370,000
2. Grandon Goetzman signed at $490,000
2. Alex Dickerson signed at slot at $392,400
3. Johnny Eiermann signed at $550,000
4. Dillon Maples not signed at $2,500,000
5. Nicky Delmonico not signed at $1,525,000
6. Amir Garrett not signed at $1,000,000
7. Phil Evans signed at $650,000
8. Shawon Dunston not signed at $1,275,000
9. Julius Gaines not signed
10. Navery Moore not signed at $400,000
11. Burch Smith signed at $250,000
12. Matt Dean signed at $737,500
13. Garrett Buechele signed early at slot
14. Josh Tobias not signed
15. Dillon Peters not signed

This is very high risk / high reward for the Rays, but keeping Daniel Norris away from Toronto might have been a great move down the road.
