Red Sox sleeper

Raul Alacantra has been allergic to hits this year. He is an 18 year old RHP pitching in the GCL. Kevin Goldstein reported that he’s been hitting the mid 90s on his fastball. He pitched today and went 6 IP 1 H 0 ER 0 BB and 4 Ks. His year to date line is 43 IP 19 H 4 ER 6 BB and 25 Ks. Yes his k’s are low but he has a 1.64 GO/AO ratio and is just 18.

Keep in mind

A hit is more likely to occur on a GB than a FB. He could simply be inducing a ton of weak contact.

Better bat going forward

Eric Hosmer or Jason Heyward?

I love Heyward, but that's a bold statement that requires explanation.

Hosmer is having a rather amazing age 21 season.

To clarify, don't tell me why Heyward is great, tell me why it's not even close with Hosmer.

Hosmer is looking more and more like a top 5 hitting 1st baseman.

heyward>hosmer

They’re the same age, I think Heyward has better plate discipline, better power potential, similar hitting ability.

IMO, if we were to look back 5 years from now, wouldn’t be much of an argument. I think Hosmer settles into a slightly above-average 1B. I think they’ve both got a ton of room to grow, but I don’t see Hosmer’s power ceiling being as high as Heyward’s. Of course, Heyward’s gotta stay heatlhy.

I think the Votto comp for Hosmer is a bit much. I think Billy Butler with less gap power/more over-the-fence power fits better.

by another know it all on Aug 3, 2011 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

even with all his injuries this year, Heyward’s iso is .175 and he’s has seasons of .259 and .257. Hosmer had a .303 in AA last year but had never had an iso above .189 in any season. Seems to me that Heyward, based on facts, has a better history of power hitting. Yet, it’s somewhat of a toss-up as to who will be stronger going forward.

by apoxonbothyourhouses on Aug 4, 2011 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions

they're both rather large human beings

They’re also both really young and the bulk of the data on each is from minor league play, where polish can often provide for deceiving power numbers.

by mrkupe on Aug 4, 2011 7:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Upton

Heyward hits a lot of groundballs with his swing.

Also, Heyward’s stock has to take somewhat of a discount due to future health concerns (lower back, less cartiledge between joints than normal — all things that you don’t want to hear about with regards to a 22 year old player)

Funny

This time last year almost everyone was picking Heyward. People forgot just how freaking talented Upton was/still is. Justin is having a great year, but I still don’t think this is particularly close to what his peak will look like.

he's been hurt

over and over again. I hope he comes out next year and proves everyone wrong by playing 150 games and putting an iso of .300 up with an OPS of .950. He’s starting to remind me of Cliff Floyd a bit: allt he talent in the world but can never put it together due to consistent injury issues.

Cliff Floyd

Don’t think this would be a bad outcome at all really, but the fact that Jason Heywards’s initial campaign as a 20/21 year old mirrors Cliff Floyd’s prime performances leaves me thinking it is ultimately a conservative comparison assuming health (obviously not a certainty) & I’d expect more. Basically a long way of saying ‘agreed’.

by Matt0330 on Aug 4, 2011 8:51 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think it's a matter of proving anybody wrong performance-wise

Heyward has gotten an astonishing amount of praise (much of it deserved, yes, but still) for much of his pro career. I don’t think he has much of a claim to the “nobody believed in me” card.

Martinez's only out of the night

He flew out very deep to Minute Maid’s gigantic center field. Stubbs had to run up Tal’s Hill in the deepest part of the park to catch it.

He was a few inches from a homer on his single, and few degrees from a homer on his only out of the night (because of the way MMP is laid out).

very exciting shortstop talent

i think he’s probably flying under the radar a bit, but good glove shortstop who has a good hit tool, projects to hit for some power, and is still developing physically. For me, as of now, borderline top 20 prospect in the Cubs system, although it’s a toss-up in the 15-20 area with all the high upside pieces. Since he’s coming up in the Cubs org, some comparisons have been made to Starlin Castro. I had hoped the Cubs might juggle things around and bump him up to Boise, but they decided to go with the straight positional move (moved up Zapata to Boise to replace an OF).

Going to be interesting what the Cubs do with him. Some of us Cubs fans are speculating that he may get jumped to full-season ball next year (particularly since the “tier” above him isn’t lighting things up). Furthermore, the Cubs may want to bring over Penalver next year, and Gioskar Amaya could grab some time at shortstop as well. To have the middle infield depth look so promising after graduating Castro and trading Lee is exciting (I have high doubts about Alcantara’s bat, but he’s so young and his glove is a plus, that he can’t be ruled out).

by StrosSouth on Aug 3, 2011 10:40 PM EDT reply actions

Pitcher well

His command wasn’t super sharp, but he did a great job taking advantage of the Reds’ aggressiveness and getting them to hit his pitch. Spots the FB at the top of zone very well, which allows him to get swings and misses on that 89-mph FB. The action on the secondaries is good and he’s got a nice easy delivery, though he visibly muscled up to hit 90 a few times, which wasn’t really necessary or effective.

by blackoutyears on Aug 3, 2011 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Looking like a good no. 3

I was at the game, the Reds did make a lot of hard contact at times so it wasn’t the sharpest I’ve seen Lyles, but he did a good job throwing strikes and keeping runners off base.

As discussed above, J.D. Martinez had a monster night. He looked solid defensively in left field and hit the ball hard in every at bat.

Jose Altuve and Jimmy Paredes also looked good. I’m sticking with “tick above average” for Altuve’s speed. I don’t care if he looks a little funny running, his effective speed is a 55 in my opinion.

http://www.crawfishboxes.com

by OremLK on Aug 4, 2011 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions

#3 seems reasonable

for Lyles. He does it easy, and he’s so young. Improved command will help. I’ve been waiting to see Martinez since the middle of alst year and he hasn’t disappointed. Love the swing and he’s got a good build, strong enough to provide power but not so big he’s a baseclogger or liability in the field. Nice player.

Paredes looks interesting, but we’ll need to wait until the league’s had a chance to get a book on him. The swing gets a little long (slight wrap?) and he’s not incredibly discriminating, as his minor league walk rate would indicate. He hits the ball hard but he looked pretty bad against good breaking stuff. Whereas Martinez and Altuve look legitimately able to keep rolling thanks to swing mechanics and approach, Paredes has some holes.

Still can’t go too much above average on Altuve’s speed. Keep in mind that he’s running 100% on every ball. As much as fans want to think that’s a good thing, it isn’t.

Monstrous

This kid has excelled thus far to stay the least. He’s still just 18 & has sported excellent ratios/results thus far in his smattering of appearances in 2011.

I have a feeling he’s ultimately the biggest riser amongst the Jays crop of young arms. A somewhat surprising draft choice at the time (Jays probably had to take their guy a little higher than industry consensus to ensure grabbing him due to some late momentum) looks inspired at this point considering the reports & #s.

by Matt0330 on Aug 3, 2011 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd probably argue he's behind Nicolino from the 2010 crop

but they’ve both been pretty much unhittable all year. Just the fact Nicolino has done it at the higher level all season.

Jays scouting staff is ridiculous; especially with the HS pitchers. Mitchell Taylor and Myles Jaye are two more overslot HS pitchers from that same class who are having strong debut seasons as well.

by metafour on Aug 4, 2011 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions

I think its a bit early to say that. Its possible Nicolino could fill out and add a few ticks on his velocity. He’s already got a good change-up and if he can really improve his breaking ball, he would be a guy with potential to be a #2-3

by Sniderlover on Aug 4, 2011 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I would say lower, but not much lower

And as usually happens Syndergaard is the riskier of the two. I don’t know how I’ll rank them yet. Vancouver goes to Boise for a 5 game set to end the season so I should get a look at both then (assuming Nicolino isn’t promoted).

by Jeff Reese on Aug 4, 2011 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it's fair to rank either higher based on what your criteria is

If your criteria is who creates more value and the probability of achieving the value then I would say Nicolino.
If your criteria is who creates more value for a championship team then Syndergaard is your man.

Of course, there is no way to prove sustainable production, but I stand by my final blurb – he’s being blocked by Loney/Rivera/Gwynn Jr. and the Dodgers are 10 games under .500 with 50 games to go – give the guy a shot.

by Jeff Reese on Aug 5, 2011 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, as long as he's successful swinging the bat, he doesn't have to adjust his approach.

We won’t know until he moves up if he can make the adjustments. Still, the improvement he’s made from hitting int he low 200s in the DSL last year with very little power, to now hitting .320 with power in the NWL is encouraging.

Doing this at his age,

in Spokane, is very impressive. I was lucky to snag both him and Bogaerts this year, two of the most interesting teenage bats above Rookie Ball. And shoot, he’s gone from hitting in the low-.200s in June of this year to a .373 average for the month of July. Yowzah!

Still, I always monitor walks, even at this age. Part of what makes Bogaerts interesting is his solid 9% walk rate, and the fact that his OBP is 75 points higher than his .235 average. That on-base ability is going to stand him in good stead when he does start making more contact. And both of these guys make a lot of noise when they do make contact. Over half of Bogaerts’ hits (19 of 36) have gone for extra bases.

Still surprised

he got sent back to AAA. No reason to further dent the confidence especially with the Astros bringing up most of their best prospects this season.

by RedHopeful on Aug 4, 2011 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

My only guess is service time

Because the way he’s producing the majors was about what I expected out of him.

by Jeff Reese on Aug 4, 2011 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it's because his performance has dropped off

Over the course of the season. Astros probably putting too much stock in month-to-month data.

Was thinking that

but shouldn’t he be allowed to shake the cobwebs at the AA level – sorry I mean the Mlb level? :)

Jason Parks on Singleton:
Singleton is a big, strong lefty with a thunderbolt in the stick, leading some scouts to suggest his future power could reach the 80-grade level. His overall approach and hit tool (future) will allow for power translation, although his bat will have to carry the weight of his rise to the majors. Despite being somewhat athletic and owning a solid arm, Singleton’s body might eventually cement his feet at first base, which is where the ‘Stros currently have those feet penciled in. Several scouts mentioned that he could handle the physical necessities of left field, but Singleton’s offensive ceiling will have value at any position on the diamond, so it might not matter. Because I didn’t include Singleton on my first-base rankings, as he was playing left field for the Phillies at the time, I’ve decided to include him on this list.

Damn! I really like the potential in that bat, but I didn’t think he had 80 power type of projection.

by Jeff Reese on Aug 4, 2011 11:22 AM EDT reply actions

Wow.

For some reason I was under the impression he projected as more of a 60 power, 25ish HR guy with high OBP. That’s nice to hear.

I would have probably went 65

And given his approach and hit tool, that made him potentially special. I can’t quite wrap my head around the potential for 80 power for Singleton just yet.

by Jeff Reese on Aug 4, 2011 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

does seem a little rich to me

I’m reminded a bit of Billy Butler here, better athlete though. Butler also had some very lofty power projections when he was younger, although I think he’s been more “limited” by a balanced approach rather than physicality. Thoughts?

by mrkupe on Aug 4, 2011 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmm, that's not a bad call

I would bet on a bit more in game power out of Singleton, but I could see that kind of outcome. Astros fans would have to be happy with that too.

by Jeff Reese on Aug 4, 2011 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Usually hate comps

but Butler for a Singleton offensive comp is something that I could agree with. Really glad that he’ll be able to be a 1B in HOU, I just don’t think that the corner OF experiment in Philly could have produced anything but a below average fielding corner.

by gore51 on Aug 4, 2011 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know

Their frames and athleticism seem really different to me, Singleton bats LH, Butler RH, and Singleton seems like he will be a better fielder and maybe have a tick more power but a tick less contact ability? The comp just doesn’t seem that great to me.

The comp which sprung to mind for me was “Adrian Gonzalez with less power”. Their swing, athleticism, and approach seems more similar to me than Butler’s and Singleton’s. But comps will always be pretty rough by nature… cliched as it is to say, every player is different.

Somebody

mentioned Ryan Howard in the same breath as Singleton in a trade breakdown. Seemed excessive, but that’s at least two opinions in that realm.

by blackoutyears on Aug 5, 2011 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Just seemed convenient

Being a well developed black first baseman that was in the Phillies organization. I think Singleton will have a better hit tool but less power than Howard.

by Jeff Reese on Aug 5, 2011 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought

the PHI connection had to be at least a part of that.

by blackoutyears on Aug 5, 2011 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't want to say anybody is wrong here

just want to point out, that after a little swing adjustment a few weeks ago, Butler has been absolutely crushing the ball. i want to say 7 HR in his last 15 or so games. i think he is young enough to still start living up to some of those power projections.

I mean he does have that huge powerful Howard-esque frame

But I wasn’t sure I saw the leverage and hip rotation to hit for quite that much power. 65 sounds reasonable. As an Astros fan I’ll hope Parks is right though.

technically it's not Parks, just "some scouts"

I’ll admit to always being a little wary of such comments. A little too National Enquirer for my tastes.

Who’s it gonna be? Bell or Richards…you guys know better than i, but it wouldn’t be a total upset to see Richards right?!

By the way

Highlights of J.D. Martinez from last night.

Fielding
Three hits including first ML homer

Wish they had video of the other ball he hit for a flyout, it was absolutely crushed, would have been a homer in most parks.
