Cubs so far

Trey McNutt (not certain if he’s done as I type this) – 6 ip, 5 h, 3 bb, 3 K’s, 2 HBP, 7:3 GO/FO, 1 R.

Righty has been hampered by injuries this year, and the Cubs will send him to Arizona to get his innings total up for the season. He’s still flashed his potential, and has shown an improved change, but the consistency isn’t there.

Dae-Eun Rhee (done) – 6.2 ip, 5 h, 1 bb, 11 K’s, 2 R (2 run homer), 4:4 GO/FO.

He’s shown flashes this year, but has been a tad inconsistent. That said, he’s starting to show why he was so exciting. JJ Cooper noted in his chat the other day that he was 94/95 with a good change. The good change part is the more exciting point to me as that was his out-pitch (some called it a split, some called it a split-change), but I was surprised at the 94/95, as I had only heard/seen low 90’s. Perhaps the better news, he’s working 5-6 innings each time out, and his durability (to stick as a starter) was a concern pre-TJ. With the weakened Cubs system, he’s a solid top 10, and perhaps top 5-7 or so.

Frank Del Valle – 5.1 shutout, 4 h, 1 bb, 7 K’s, 6:2 GO/FO.

The built Cuban lefty has solid enough stuff/potential to be an intriguing lefty starting pitching prospect, but is fairly far away right now and has to work on his secondary stuff.

McNutt

got into some problems in the 7th. After getting two outs, he walked one and gave up two singles, before striking out Chih-Hsien Chiang. Overall line looks pretty eh as a result of it – 7 ip, 7 h, 4 bb, 2 R, 5 K’s, 2 HBP, 7:4 GO/FO. That said, I like that the Cubs are pushing his pitch counts in an effort to work him. 97 pitches.

by toonsterwu on Aug 19, 2011 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

oddest thing

Bob Nightengale tweeted yesterday that Frank Del Valle was hitting 98 on the gun. That’s far higher than anything I’ve ever heard. If he is 98 … that’s a dang fascinating arm. Had been hearing low 90’s, occasionaly hitting a 93/94 type number.

6.2 ip, 8 hits, 10 k’s, 0 bb’s

i agree with most that it’s best to judge pitchers based on scouting reports. indeed, it’s fairly easy to put up good strikeout totals in the minors if you’re willing and able to throw strikes. however, once in a while a guy comes along and shocks you by having a long major league career despite mediocre stuff. could this be one of those guys?

That was 23 games (92 AB) without a walk. I still like him QUITE a bit.

2 walks!

And it was a 16 inning game with only 4 total walks allowed by the opposing pitchers. He also went 3-6 with a double, which is pretty common for him.

Prospect: Sano; MLBer: Cuthbert

Pros/cons:
- CC should stick at 3B, whereas Sano is likely going to RF.
- Cuthbert won’t have Sano’s power but will likely be the better hitter.
- Sano has the higher ceiling b/c of his bat, but CC should be a better all-around player.

by dbreer23 on Aug 20, 2011 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Sano has the higher ceiling b/c of his bat.

funny, i’ve read the exact opposite.

by apoxonbothyourhouses on Aug 20, 2011 1:50 AM EDT up reply actions

I always find this sort of conclusion confusing

If a guy projects to be the better major league player, he’s the better prospect. Yes, different players have different ceilings and floors, but what is most relevant for evaluation is the most reasonable expectation of performance. Otherwise you start getting into all of that weird BS where you get somebody claiming that there’s a couple hundred dudes in the minors who could be No. 1 starters and whatnot.

by mrkupe on Aug 20, 2011 1:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Depends on which you prefer: ceiling or floor

IMO, Sano has the higher ceiling, but lower floor, with the opposite for Cuthbert (higher floor, lower ceiling). Some define a prospect’s ranking based on the higher ceiling, some by the higher floor.

by dbreer23 on Aug 20, 2011 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions

this sort of argument still doesn't appeal to me

It makes entirely too much sense to simply go with the 50th percentile outcome. Floor and ceiling affect that outcome (as they affect all outcomes).

by mrkupe on Aug 20, 2011 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Sano has the raw power that Cuthbert just doesn't have

People have a tendency to fall in love with power and will run him up a list because of it. I’ll take Cuthbert.

by Jeff Reese on Aug 20, 2011 7:57 AM EDT up reply actions

+1

Cuthbert is just the better all around player. And it’s not like the power is minimal with Cheslor either. I really think he develops more as he moves up the chain.

by guru4u on Aug 20, 2011 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

just to be clear, I wasn't using my point to declare Sano > Cuthbert or vice versa

I’d be inclined to take Cuthbert at the moment, but there’s just too much we don’t know about them just yet to speak with much certainty. It wouldn’t be too surprising to see the two of them switch places in the annual rankings 3-4 times before they reach the majors.

by mrkupe on Aug 20, 2011 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions

They seem like different players to me. Cuthbert is more in the Profar school of prospects (lots of polish, advanced knowledge of the strike zone, enough pop to take advantage of the tasty pitches that he sees). Sano has more raw hitting ability; I keep hearing reports of the “different sound” off of his bat, which is pretty exciting. But he doesn’t have the polish of Cuthbert.

I don’t think it’s quite as simple as 50th percentile projections either. I prefer to think of it as projecting how much the player will fill out their current grades to future grades (or in John’s parlance, how they’ll turn their tools into skills; I think this is why makeup is important; players with good makeup get a little extra credit in that we think they’ll max out their tools a little bit better).

With Sano, I see a guy who’s got game power but not game hitting or strike zone ability yet (but projects to gain those things). With Cuthbert, I see a guy with the ability to do all three in game, but with a lesser ceiling. I’m pretty bullish on Sano’s chances of becoming a good all-around hitter, so I think I like him a little more than Cuthbert, but I also think that his 50th percentile outcome might be worse than Cuthbert’s, if that makes sense.

5 straight with a HR I believe

if he were 2 years younger he’d be a top 50 prospect I believe. It is too bad the Rays are so damn slow promoting their guys, it is tough to judge just how good guys like DD and Bortnick are because they are so old for the league they are in.

The point is valid though

Dietrich should be at least in high A right now. Prospect evaluators would have a much easier job figuring out where he fits into a top 100 list if he was facing more advanced competition.

Does he actually have good command of his stuff, or is it just so unhittable that no one walks against him because he can throw it down the middle and still K or induce weak contact? Rasmus was a bit of an add-on...

And many of the best years for Drew (and all for Haren) were on different teams, but they’ve done a decent job (and with Pujols got a little lucky) at drafting talent. Hard to say as a devoted Cubs fan…

by dbreer23 on Aug 20, 2011 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't really say that.

Actually, most of the good position players the Rockies have developed have been through the draft. With pitching, on the other hand, they’ve had much more luck in Latin America.

If by the past few years, you mean guys still currently in the minors, or just recently promoted, I’d still say it’s been more draft heavy than international. The only real quality international hitting prospects the Rockies have are guys like Wilin Rosario, Rafael Ortega, Rosell Herrera, and Hector Gomez. And there isn’t anyone whose made the big league roster who qualifies(unless you’re a Johnny Herrera fan). On the flip side, the system is full of drafted/American bats…Arenado, Wheeler, Parker, Rutledge, Story, Swanner, Dickerson, Zuanich, Field, Paulsen, Pacheco, etc…plus all the recent callups, such as Blackmon, Nelson, Young Jr, Fowler, Stewart, Iannetta, Smith, Tulo, etc.

Honestly, I can’t really think of many international position prospects the Rockies have ever signed and developed, that have ever really amounted to a whole lot. The only really good one they’ve had recently is Carlos Gonzalez, but they traded for him after he already made the majors, so that doesn’t really count. In all reality, they really haven’t developed any real good hitting prospects in the past several years, from anywhere…but the bigger group of mediocre hitters has been of the drafted variety, I would say.

Alanna Rizzo is my dream girl.

my bad

actually, for some reason i had thought Arenado was a international signing

but i guess when i made the comment, i was thinking more about the pitchers. weren’t ubaldo, chacin, and nicasio all international signings? if you look at their success…and compare to the success of top pitching prospects picked up in the draft…….

as for Cargo….as a Dbacks fan, i’m painfully aware of his origins :(
