Brooks Raley
Zeke Spruill
Drew Smyly
Rob Rasmussen vs Trevor May
Asher Wojciechowski
Kyle Allen

Adonys Cardona in relief, 3IP, 2 hits, 1 BB, 3K, 4:2 GO:FO and W
So far on the year he has a 14 strikeouts to 2 walks in 11 innings. Only 2 walks for a 17 year old latin american kid in his first pro season is exciting
Jays fans must love the commitment that the Jays are showing to Latin American talent

I like it, if we still had JP Ricciardi, we probably wouldn’t have Gose, Hechavarria, Lawrie, etc.

Wait but
the Pirates FO literally MANDATE that pitchers throw only FB in A-Ball to work on location. I don’t think Taillon is better than Teheran right now, but his ceiling is higher that Teheran’s.
by apoxonbothyourhouses on Jul 10, 2011 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions
Close
They emphasize fastball control and want them to throw them 70-80% of the time, but Taillon does throw breaking balls as well.
Worst start of Taillon's young career,
and b-t-b games with two walks after five games without issuing one. I’m speechless at the Teheran remark.
by blackoutyears on Jul 10, 2011 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions
fair enough
but i’ve read that they’re making Taillon pitch exclusively FBs.
by apoxonbothyourhouses on Jul 10, 2011 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Where?
PIT stresses FB command and expects their pitchers to throw a lot of them, but every game report on Taillon has noted his throwing his breaking ball.
by blackoutyears on Jul 10, 2011 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Taillon's ceiling is higher than Teheran's.
That’s like an argument that Harper’s ceiling is higher than Trouts. In other words, an argument not worth wasting time on. Both ceilings are through the roof.
You are right
One start allows anyone to confirm that Player A > Player B.
Wojciechowski

still think he might be better suited for the pen

Disagree.
& I’m still 50/50 over whether Wojciechowski ends up in the pen. Three months of stats from Wojciechowski’s full season debut really shouldn’t be weighted that heavily.
Yeah,
let’s not write him off just yet. I don’t think anyone tabbed Wojo as a guy who was going to fly through the minors.

McNutt was pulled after one inning
Anyone know why?
"Some field has fences, and sometime, the field cant hold a player, but most of the time, a field cant hold Domingo"
http://www.domingobeisbol.com/
Yes from last night
In fact, I watched that first inning on MiLB.tv. McNutt had serious command issues and his secondaries were not working well. Announcer speculated (paraphrasing) that he may still be bothered by the injury because he looked nothing like the McNutt that they saw at the end of last year and prior to the injury.
Anyway, they went into a rain delay after that first inning that took him out of the game. Resumed sometime last night before suspending it.

He’s the third wheel behind Miller and Martinez but he can become a great pitcher.
in 20.1 innings
he’s got 24 Ks and 4 walks. Not a bad first five starts. He’s actually fourth wheel behind the sadly under-appreciated Trevor Rosenthal right now but he could shoot up to third if he keeps this up.
Trevor May
Dealing. 7 innings. 1 hit. 9 Ks, 2 walks — amazing how he’s got his BBs under control as the season has progressed.
sorry to have missed this game
Spent it in San Antonio, but picking up my family from the airport!
When I get a chance, I’ll edit up some video for you guys of Gyorko at the plate with some comments. He doesn’t look very imposing, but the boy sure can hit. Haven’t seen enough of his defense to know for sure (hence no full report for a little while yet), but looks competent at 3B. Lots to like with him.
probably Darnell
He’s got the advantage of a couple of extra years of development so you have to be careful in the comparison, but Darnell is just a bigger, stronger dude. His power gives him a better chance to be an impact player at the plate. Gyorko’s not really a power guy . . .but as AA pitchers are learning, he’s also not a guy you want to make a mistake against. That kind of polish is pleasantly surprising to see out of a player at this level only a year out of college.
Do you thin Arencibia holds him back?

I don’t think he’s gone more than five innings yet this year
very nice arm
I had him down as a possible sleeper because of overexposure. He had been on the prospect radar for a good while and sometimes those guys just get over-analyzed to death. I’m wondering how nice the stuff is going to be in the end, but command and left-handed is a combo that will earn you lots of looks.
I don't know about regularly
But he did hit 95 in his first outing according to the broadcast. I get the impression that he sits 90-91

by angelsownredsux on Jul 10, 2011 4:04 AM EDT up reply actions
I agree with Al.
That seems pretty optimistic. I think Drew has decidedly more power. He’s also a LHH. So far Cozart has done a nice job of staying within himself. He’s swung through some FBs but has laid off breaking balls out of the zone (this is paramount to every day success) and has toned down the front foot pick-up, probably because he’s not gearing up for power at all. The swing plane is very level and short, and I’m interested to see how long it takes before he gets comfortable enough to sell out for some power, and whether it comes before the league gets a book on him To be fair though, Drew isn’t an outrageous ceiling, I’m just not sure what percentage chance Cozart has of reaching it.
by blackoutyears on Jul 10, 2011 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions
The other thing
is that we’re not sure yet if Cozart is anywhere close to as good a defender as Drew. He’s handled all the routine plays, but I haven’t seen him make any extraordinary range plays yet and his throws to first have more arc to them than I’m used to from SS, especially after watching Janish’s lasers the last year.
by blackoutyears on Jul 10, 2011 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Just saw that good range play
I was looking for. Ball back through the box by Weeks (almost hit Willis) and Cozart scooped it on the run and got Weeks by a step and a half. Outside of a lack of crispness on the longer throws (he drops his elbow, resulting in that loop), his arm is accurate and the throws have good carry. I think that saying he’s as good as Janish is a stretch, but he hasn’t looked like a tremendous drop-off.

Repeating Rookie ball and showing the same power as last year. A name to watch.
Oscar Tejeda
inching toward respectability. He’s maintained a lot of last year’s High-A rates while struggling to make contact, but recently he’s been on a tear, with seven multi-hit games in his last eleven.
Definitely not,
but when a player is struggling to simply make contact, as has been the case most of this year, I don’t expect power. We’ll see if this is him adjusting, as he has to make consistent contact before we worry about his pop. If he can finish with a strong second half then he’ll still be on track. He’s a 21-year-old in Double-A after all. And I am heartened that he’s maintained the fringy walk and strikeout rates despite his struggles.
