Discussion Question: Replacing Mike Trout in the Futures Game
Replacing Mike Trout in the Futures Game
Angels prospect Mike Trout won't appear in the 2011 MLB All-Star Futures Game as long as he's on the major league roster. Assuming that Trout doesn't head back to the minors before the showcase, this opens up a spot on the roster. Let's see if we can fill it.
There is a complicating factor here: Trout was the only Angels representative on either the US or World Squads. The two most logical people to replace him from the Angels system on a talent basis are infielder Jean Segura and pitcher Garrett Richards, but Segura is from the Dominican Republic, so he doesn't fit on the US squad. The team already has 10 pitchers, so adding Richards makes things unbalanced with the World Roster.
In the discussion thread, a reader recommended outfielders Jeremy Moore and Kole Calhoun. Neither of them are hot prospects, but if you want to stick with the Angels having a representative, they look like the main bets.
Who, in your opinion, should replace Trout if he remains in the majors and ineligible? To narrow this down somewhat, let's say that it needs to be an outfielder, but it doesn't have to be an Angel.
So, adding the two Angels guys with other names we came up with, which of these guys would you like to see on the team if the decision was totally up to you and an Angel wasn't mandatory?
Kole Calhoun, Angels
Anthony Gose, Blue Jays
Aaron Hicks, Twins
Brett Jackson, Cubs
Desmond Jennings, Rays
Jake Marisnek, Blue Jays
Jeremy Moore, Angels
Trayvon Robinson, Dodgers
Tim Wheeler, Rockies

Trayvon
I voted for Trayvon Robinson. He’s got tools, is thriving in Triple-A (granted the environment inflates his stats), and is close to the majors, so he should be of interest to people.
I voted Trayvon as well...
I’ve seen him live a few times. Looks alot bigger than what I’ve seen him listed as. Seems like a true athlete with raw skills gushing with potential. Now he’s putting up numbers that back it up.
Not saying he's big
but he looked bigger than 5 10’ 170. I thought closer to 200. He was ripped though so I guess it could be right. He looks like a prototypical running back.
well he is listed at 200 on milb.com

That makes sense
I usually look at firstinning.com and they have him 5 10, 170.
I'd like to see Cwart
But I’ll vote fore Moore

Trayvon
The only reason he wasnt named to begin with was probably the likelihood of his promotion
Not Jennings
He is out a couple of days (or so) with a bruised finger.
Anthony Gose please
he’s a real prospect and by far the most exciting player on this list.
GO GOSE!

hmm
Robinson would be a good choice. If you can’t find an Angels player that fits, you might as well go for the next best thing and get a player from a different team in the same area.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Anthony Gose (fast guys always being interesting to watch in exhibitions) or Tim Wheeler (solid bet to be fantasy gold in a couple of years).
I bet Gose could make the game very interesting with his blazing speed.

I like Michael Choice
He is a CF and he is absolutely on fire right now. I can’t see anyone else in the minors at CF who fits the bill better.

I didn't know Kole Calhoun's parents posted here
Went with Hicks, because he’s somewhat of a polarizing prospect and I’m sort of on the fence with him. I’d like to get a look at him at the plate.

Anthony Gose
He’s had a terrific year thus far at AA New Hampshire. He’s got speed (41 SB in 52 attempts, 5 triples), a bit of pop in his bat (9 HR, 11 2B), and, while the average isn’t great (.261), he takes his walks (38) for a .353 OBP. All of this done at the relatively young age of 20.
"The first thing I told the umpire was that 'It's a shame that he can't have an ERA because those runs are his.' "
Sadly I’ll have to agree.

Anthony Gose
Most exciting and fun player to watch on the list.

Looks like we're all wrong:
We were told they’re not replacing Trout on the roster. Probably means more Harper. RT @YourSFGiants: @keithlaw Any idea on his replacement?

Awesome how many votes there are.
I went with Brett Jackson, who is probably going to be a ML soon enough so it’d be cool to see him back in the Futures Game. Plus, he’s the most underrated CF prospect in the game, or was for a minute there.
I like Hicks or Jennings after that.
there could be a couple good options.
I like goose personaly this guy has blinding speed with some pop. Kinda like a crawford sort of player. Also desmond jennings i think is deserving.
