Blue Jays Top 30 -- Post Draft (assuming top draft pix signed)

i was going to just do a top 10, but there's just waaaaay too many prospects in the Toronto Org. to do that:

  1.  Brett Lawrie

  2.  Kyle Drabek

  3.  Travis d'Arnaud

  4.  Anthony Gose

  5.  Jake Marisnick

  6.  Henderson Alvarez

  7.  Tyler Beede

  8.  Deck McGuire

  9.  Drew Hutchison

10.  David Cooper

11.  Adam Loewen

12.  Adeiny Hechevarria

13.  Mike McDade

14.  Carlos Perez

15.  Justin Nicolino

16. Chad Jenkins

17.  Marcus Knecht

18.  Zach Stewart

19.  Noah Syndergaard

20.  Aaron Sanchez

21.  Daniel Norris

22.  Adonys Cardona

23.  Griffin Murphy

24.  Nestor Molina

25.  Dickie Thon

26.  Kellen Sweeney

27.  Asher Wojcieshowski

28.  Moises Sierra

29.   AJ Jiminez

30.  Michael Crouse

.... and it wouldn't be hard to come up with another 20+ prospects worth following.

Norris

Why would Daniel Norris be #20?? He was easily the best HS LHP in the draft and probably an overall top 15 -20 talent. He went so late due to his strong commitment to Clemson. I would put him above Beede & Hutchison but below McGuire. Norris (assuming good health & signs with TOR) should be an excellent arm in their solid farm system.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

Norris might not sign, but if he does, he is easily Top 10.

Norris

i don’t like his delivery — he throws hard, but i think he’s gonna blow his arm up.

where would you guys put him?

by Alfamale on Jul 7, 2011 9:31 PM EDT reply actions

Top 10 for sure.

Assuming Drabek is no longer a prospect I would slot Norris anywhere from 4-8. I like him more than Beede. Something like Lawrie, d’Arnaud, McGuire, Gose, Norris. With Marisnick, Alvarez, Hutchison, etc following. It’s tough to say without looking at it a little more. So much pitching depth in the system

"he throws hard, but i think he’s gonna blow his arm up."

Have you seen Norris pitch enough to be able to say this definitively? I have literally never read a report that commented negatively on his delivery.

by blackoutyears on Jul 8, 2011 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Really? How?

Are you biggest Blue Jay fan in Tennessee? I’ve been following Norris since the summer after his sophomore year in h.s. and I’ve probably seen about ten minutes of video.

I see no things wrong with his delivery, it looks very smooth and easily repeatable.

Looks fine to me.

Little long in the back. Few things that could be cleaned up/tightened up… but nothing out of the ordinary for a high school kid.

Gose

damn, absolutely. he’d be number 4.

I like D'Arnaud more than Drabek

Nice work.

If it were me, I would

-Remove Cooper. C+ kind of guy for me. I just don’t see him hitting that much. Its a Las Vegas mirage.
-Have Norris 5th (I wouldn’t rank Drabek as he’s graduated).
-Have Aaron Sanchez 7th (love him)
-Remove Adam Loewen (age)
-Move Dickie Thon up (monster tools)
-Add Joe Musgrove & Kevin Comer
-Move Mike McDade down (Not a believer)
-Add Matt Dean
-Move Asher Wojciechowski up

You seem to be a little too minor-league-results based for my tastes.

by alskor on Jul 8, 2011 1:56 AM EDT reply actions

i disagree

with just about all of that.

by Alfamale on Jul 8, 2011 5:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m sure Cooper would do fine in the majors..given he gets more then around 50 AB’s.

Well, I figured that... since you posted your list above. : )

but I would advise you to look less at minor league stat lines and more at the player abilities/tools. I really can’t imagine a serious talent evaluator even considering taking David Cooper over Daniel Norris or Aaron Sanchez. They aren’t in the same neighborhood. Two exciting arms with FOR potential vs a shorter 1B with sub par power who hasn’t hit at all outside of when he was a 24 year old in one of the most hitter friendly parks in the minors.

Sounds good to me

Except the only two TOR prospects I’d have ahead of Norris are Lawrie & d’Arnaud.

by Jeff Reese on Jul 8, 2011 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm happy to see Adam Loewen do well and all, but...

He’s a 27 year old playing in a hitter friendly park. On a list like this, why have him just outside the Top 10?

by Outshined_One on Jul 8, 2011 2:10 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

well

the reason he’s 27 and still in AAA is because he used to be a pitcher… not sure you remember?

by Alfamale on Jul 8, 2011 5:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think there's any reason to be snarky. You put a list out there, it's open for criticism.

I think most people here know the story of Adam Loewen and that he used to be a pitcher. Looking at the big picture, he’s playing in the PCL, in Vegas, he’s 27, and until this season was a .240 hitter with moderate to below average power.

There’s reason for people to be speculative about how his bat will translate to the majors and whether he’ll even be as successful as Rick Ankiel, and Ankiels “success” is mostly just based off of the fact that he made it at all and stuck around because he’s got above-average power.

For all of these reasons, I think people like the story of Loewen but give the opportunity to pick a player out of the Blue Jays organization that they think has the highest chance for success, he’d probably just come in behind 20+ other prospects because of age, experience, potential.

You have the right to your opinion, give us the right to ours.

because

he’s got a great bat?

by Alfamale on Jul 8, 2011 5:51 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think he should be in the top 20 even…Hech should definately be ahead of him.

I think Moises Sierra, with his great performance in the 1st half in his season this year in Double-A should be a Top 20, atleast!

Eric Thames?

Why isn’t he on the list?

by lomo45 on Jul 8, 2011 9:51 AM EDT reply actions

Thames and Drabek

Haven’t they lost their prospect status? Thames is imminently close if he hasn’t yet.

by ayjackson on Jul 8, 2011 1:27 PM EDT reply actions

No lie, it’s actually pretty tough doing a prospect list for Toronto out of top 5 since there are so many good players that can be all over the place.

I think both Cooper and Loewen should be lower (loewen much lower). Stewart, Jimenez, Sierra, Crouse should be higher. I would also drop Hech a little further. His bat is just disappointing.

by Sniderlover on Jul 8, 2011 7:05 PM EDT reply actions

Not bad for a kid thats just getting used to playing ball in North America, we’ll see how he does next year, but he still has big potential.

Maybe

I like Marisnick a lot, but Lawrie’s bat should be REALLY good. I don’t think he sticks in the infield and I still consider him an elite prospect just off the strength of the bat.

by Jeff Reese on Jul 8, 2011 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

We were talking about him as Top 25 at the beginning of the year before he went ballistic.

by blackoutyears on Jul 9, 2011 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions

you're probably right in that

Marisnick has a massive ceiling. But in this case there’s only so much that it matters. Lawrie’s got a pretty fair ceiling himself, and he’s just about ready for the majors. Marisnick still has a ways to go.

Justin Nicolino

If there is another Matt Moore in the near future it could be this guy. His numbers in SS-A are exceeding Moore’s from the same age.
