MILB 7/5

Got to hit that 75 word limit

Star-divide

So I'll start with Bryce Harper, who's 0-1 with a RBI so far in his second game in AA

On the Pirates front (check out my nickname after all) extra base hit machine

Jarek Cunningham

is 2-2 already with 2 2B's

and Starling Marte

is 1-1 with a 2B as well

Tony Sanchez continues to struggle

as he's 0-1 so far today and for me he's the most disappointing and worrisome prospect so far this year in the Pirates system.

Oh and Pedro Alvarez is still on rehab, now up at AAA Indy. So far tonight he's

1-1, 2 RBI

Discuss!

now that his super 2 has past

nobody outside of maybe Andrew Freidman knows why Justin Ruggiano and Sam Fuld continue to start in LF for the Rays.

Another full year of control?

Starting next year right out of Spring Training?

I have absolutely no idea.

maybe they just don't think he's ready.

The Rays have usually been pretty conservative when promoting their top prospects. Why would this be any different?

not sure that would do it

he has some ML service time if i remember right.

are we sure his super 2 has passed?

I thought his service time from last September was the issue, and that he’s expected up sometime this month.

by FI2 on Jul 6, 2011 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes you do, yes you do, yes you do.

I hear every year. What you don’t do is spend an option year on a player when you call him up after rosters expand.

by PissedMick on Jul 6, 2011 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

He had 33 days of service time last year, so basically, everyone in the majors waits until late May / early June to bring up their prospects to ensure they don’t get Super 2.

Add 33 days, and you basically have it. The math I saw was that June 28th was the likely “safe” date. But it’s surely already passed.

by Galt on Jul 6, 2011 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe Friedman is being "extra special careful"

Personally I think it is idiotic. If you don’t have faith in Jennings, then give the LF job to Guyer. Failing to put the best 8 position players on the field every night might be the reason the Rays don’t make the playoffs this year… or at the very least a big contributor.

by guru4u on Jul 6, 2011 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

along the same lines...

… I don’t get why Lorenzo Cain is in Omaha. .311/.371/.527 is a nice line. Melky Cabrera is on a one year contract, so is Jeff Francoeur (he at least has an option for next year). Both of those guys have got to be trade bait…

Certainly similar to Desmond Jennings situation

Lorenzo Cain is having a nice campaign & could be a valuable future piece (he performed well in the NL for the Brewers last year as well). I’d have to think he’s promoted soon.

The Zack Greinke deal could potentially yield 4 contributors to a potential contender – nothing at all wrong with that really.

FSL matchup - Big Jake versus 'The Cooler'

Another week, another Jake Thompson & Chad James matchup. Wouldn’t you know it, James takes the loss thus falling to 0-12 (!) on the young season. James’ line was perfectly acceptable – 10 groundouts to 2 flyball outs, 8 baserunners, 5K & 4 ER in 6 IP but, alas, no dice as far as getting that elusive first victory goes.

Thompson improved to 2-3 with 6.1 shutout innings but only 1 K. That’s 26 K in just under 54 IP on the year which really surprises due to his talent & hard, power stuff. Would be interested if any FSL wonks had any current insight on this kid. He was almost certainly the best arm in the NYP last year & even though he bypassed Lo-A, I’d think he would be compiling more Ks in the FSL. Besides the raw K #s though, Thompson seems to be faring fine for the time being.

J.D. Martinez

Drew three walks and hit another homer in his four plate appearances so far tonight (game almost over).

Word is he’s been making adjustments to get more loft in his swing and improve his power numbers.

It appears to be paying dividends as this is his third consecutive game with a homer.

Coming into tonight his line was .335/.399/.517. Obviously, that will go up now. He should be closing in on a promotion to AAA and a possible September cup of coffee.

Yankee "overdrafts" getting it done

Dante Bichette Jr. 3 for 5 with a double. He has a weird .189/.400/.289 line on the season, 14 walks in 12 games but only 7 hits. Obviously it’s just the GCL, but that eye is looking great so far.

Cito Culver: 2 for 4 with a walk. He’s not showing much power, but .299/.356/.364 is none too shabby for a shortstop who won’t be 19 until the end of August.

Not an overdraft, but Mason Williams keeps doin’ work. 2 for 6 with a double, now up to .347/.388/.528 on the season. Obviously it’s early, but he could skyrocket up the lists if he keeps this up.

Culver has a chance to be a decent SS

But I think Nunez is their answer longterm. They’ll probably deal him though

Winning

Let’s look at this another way. Goldschmidt leads the Southern League in both OBP & SLG. Among those players who constitute the top 10 in each category in said league, Goldschmidt is the second youngest & youngest qualifying player respectively (Brett Jackson, who ranks 8th in OBP currently, is about 11 months younger than Goldschmidt). Paul Goldschmidt is good.

Also, two interesting athletic OFs Adam Eaton & AJ Pollock had nice performances in front of Goldschmidt last night. New BayBear Eaton had his second 3 hit outing in 4 AA games & Pollock (former Golden Domer) racked up 2 H, 1 BB, 2 R & 3 RBI.

Sean Coyle 2-4 BB

Christian Vazquez 1-4 HR BB. Vazquez was known as a + defensive catcher with not much ability to hit but this year hes up to 277/358/496 as a 20 year old in Greenville.

"still an unheralded prospect"

No offense, but this stuff gets tiresome. Most here are well aware of Lavarnway and have been for a couple of years. Believe me, if there was more optimism that he could be an every day major league catcher he’d be a bigger prospect.

It’s probably safe to say he had a reasonably productive doubleheader vs. Pawtucket: 3 for 4 with 3 HRS (all solo) and 4 walks!

He’s sitting at .308/.385/.663 in 45 AAA games on the season now with 27 of his 52 hits for extra bases.

Probably still a marginal big leaguer, but that’s one hell of season so far.

Seager is someone who I have no idea what to reasonably expect from.

By all accounts, examining his skill stats, he’s a contact hitter who has a decent enough eye. Doesn’t have a shit ton of power, but enough gap power to be useful. Some speed. Defensively he plays well at a couple of positions.

Feels like Adam Kennedy to me.
