At his age, for that league,

I’ll gladly take advanced power and a solid walk rate. Even the strikeouts aren’t horrendous at 26.8%. Most guys his age are posting rates well north of 30% in rookie ball.

I don't know

I see pretty good bat speed when I watch the video. Is the swing and miss a product of the bat speed or is it just a product of him trying to hit every damn thing out of the park?

I don’t find the Adam Dunn comp to be too bad here. High strikeout rate, but lots of homers and walks too, sounds about right.

http://www.crawfishboxes.com

by OremLK on Jul 26, 2011 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

How many times did he swing and miss at a FB though?

Even if he’s trying to hit everyone out, we’re talking about a pitch that MLB hitters have a swinging strike rate of ~6% (I think its right around there) on. He looked to be swinging and missing on every single one. Maybe he turns in to Dunn, but I could also see him having the same sort of issues as Chris Carter as he gets to AAA and the Majors.

by gobruins12345 on Jul 27, 2011 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I wish there were a way to find out what pitch he hit out off Delgado

If it was a fastball then yeah its pretty impressive. If it was an off-speed pitch that got left up (and considering Delgado’s overall performance I don’t think he was throwing many good offspeed pitches) then it really doesn’t mean a whole lot as we already know he can crush mistakes.

I definitely didn’t see the same thing as Orem though when I watched that video. Looked like a guy that had no chance against any sort of good fastball.

by nixa37 on Jul 27, 2011 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions

it was a Fastball

Delgado didn’t have his command and missed up with a fastball that Goldy demolished.

I am slightly concerned about the bast speed.

by apoxonbothyourhouses on Jul 27, 2011 3:27 AM EDT up reply actions

With Delgado

When I scouted him, he was 89-91 and only pulled a 94 MPH 4-seam out of his back pocket 3-5 times the entire game. I don’t really consider Delgado to throw with more than average velocity the vast majority of the time.

by ScoutingTheSally on Jul 28, 2011 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Not sure I buy it

http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=13126493

This clip is from spring training, and it was aan 89 mph fastball, but he didnt have any trouble turning it around.

Lots of people muight have trouble getting around on an elevated, 95 -97 heater like Eovaldi throws.

Not saying you are completely wrong about his bat speed but guys have strengths and weaknesses and what he lacks ibn pure bat speed, he makes up for in selectiveness and being short to the ball (relatively speaking for a slugger) and extremely strong.

- Bill Hicks

by casejud on Jul 27, 2011 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

That video does little to nothing to answer bat-speed questions

89 MPH is a below average fastball velocity, not to mention that it is on the middle-away part of the plate, which is an area that velocity is slower than an area on the inner half or up in the zone. The trouble that Goldschmidt might have is on inner half plus-velocity fastballs (93+ MPH). He’s definitely big and strong, so being able to muscle up and smack a pitch on the middle-away part of the plate is something that he should (and will need to) be able to do if he is going to be anything worth talking about as a major leaguer.

by gore51 on Jul 27, 2011 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure

Then again, he didn’t have any trouble hitting it either and, didn’t appear late to the ball at all. Most everybody has trouble with inner -half, plus -velocity fastballs, especially high ones.

You know what is REALLY interesting, to me anyways? I hadn’t lookes lately and i assumed Goldschmidt had an extremely high K rate this season. This wouldn’t even bother me, as of course, lots of great run producers strike out a lot.

Goldschmidt doesn’t though – 20% of his plate appearances. That is low for a slugger of his magnitude and, exceptional progress over his perfromance last year.

by gore51 on Jul 27, 2011 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep

as was pointed out earlier he’s still dining out on April and May with June and July showing a sharp regression. Not unexpected, and as was also pointed out, the walk rate seems real, which somewhat reassures me that he may be able to offset any contact issues he encounters with some on-base ability.

by blackoutyears on Jul 27, 2011 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Not really

His June was as good as his May. All he has really done is had an otherwordly April, caufght flack for not repeating it, which isn’t really all that possible to do. I seehim making adjustments just fine.

1.062 OPS the past 10 days, 1.057 OPS for the season. I think he’s been remakably consistent. It’s a long season, that’s all. He hasn’t even had one bad month so I just don’t see it.

Eovaldi's heater

Goldschmidt had trouble turning around on 94-96 his first at bat, but also struggled turning on 91-92 MPH 2-seamers from him after he essentially stopped throwing 2-seam fastballs. He did take 89 MPH out to right field, but it was a terrible mistake pitch.

Second start since his return:

5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K

In total, 9 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 8 BB, 14 K

Walks still a concern, but from what I’ve heard he isn’t nearly as wild and part of it has been teams not being as aggressive and forcing him to throw strikes. The fact that it’s leading to more strikeouts and less runs is encouraging. Hopefully he continues to build back the confidence.

Yeah...

but Alonso being a fit or not shouldn’t make a difference. Just like drafting, you shouldn’t worry about need when considering a prospect package in my opinion.

I’m not sure what value Bailey has either, but I’m guessing it’s a fair amount more than you’d think.

When drafting you don't know your needs when the players will be ready

If they’re trading for near ready guys it makes more sense to target guys that fill holes for them. Or at least get prospects at premium positions that will interest just about every team in baseball. Much harder to convert a guy like Alonso into an asset that fills a need than it is a C or SS or SP.

by nixa37 on Jul 26, 2011 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know.

This is way too hypothetical to really argue about. I guess the point I was making in this scenario, is if you’re getting an A prospect in Mesoraco, don’t take a different deal with the B+ prospect because one of the secondary pieces fits your needs better.

Yonder

How exactly is Yonder Alonso not a fit in Colorado again? He’s a good, young first baseman at a position where they have a 38 year old player there. He’s not a great fit in leftfield but, I’d say he fits perfectly at 1b, doesn’t he?

Also, Bailey has had his struggles but, he can pitch. 170 Innings, 50 Walks, 140 Ks, around a 4 ERA pitching in the GABP the past two seasons. I agree he isn’t a #2 or anything but, saying he has “no value” is kind of a misrepresentation. He’s pitched really well lately.

by nixa37 on Jul 26, 2011 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

The shoulder impingement issues

the last two years probably cloud his value as well. I think he’s a promising pitcher who’s finally coming into his own. Unless another FO really, really covets I suspect his value is greater to the Reds than in trade.

by blackoutyears on Jul 26, 2011 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I definitely got that

I think guys like him are difficult to trade because his potential outstrips his current value, and as a Reds fan my nightmare is that we spend years developing him only to see him come into his own somewhere else. If he nets the right player in trade it’s worth it, but I see these multi-player deals with Mesoraco/Grandal, Alonso, and Bailey and I get a little perturbed at the idea that Bailey is a sweetener. it’s appropriate that he is, but it could really backfire, sort of like my throwing Oswaldo Arcia into a deal this spring when I probably didn’t have to.

by blackoutyears on Jul 27, 2011 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

As a Rox fan...

I disagree. Helton is having a fine year this year and has a club option for next season, but he’s gone after that. The Rox don’t have a long term solution at 1B. I would certainly consider an offer of Mesoraco, Bailey, and Alonso.

If you’d toss Daniel Corcino in there, I’d say done deal.

This surprises me somewhat. In trying to interpret the contracts of both Aroldis and of Ubaldo, it looks like Ubaldo is under contract from 2012 -2014, and cheaply too.

He’s had some inconsistency the past year but even though those are two prospects I like, they are fairly expendable and Ubaldo is a front of the line horse. I’d be pretty tempted there.

You sure?

Wait a minute – isn’t Randall Delgado a prospect of some renown? I’ve heard about this one game though wherein Goldschmidt didn’t homer against a decent prospect & did go yard versus a less talented AA reliever. Yes, in the same game.

I’m going to have to check into this as it seemed to be all but implied that Goldschmidt was feasting on inferior talents whilst compiling his #s & not capable of making contact against talented pitchers (even though his swing on video seems fine of course, his output is out of this world in a relatively neutral league & his improved K rate/BB #s aren’t at all out of line with players of his position/profile).

Just having some fun obviously, but there’s figurative blood in the water for Goldschmidt it seems at the moment. I’m not insisting he’s Adam Dunn incarnate as some others are, no far from it, but I wouldn’t bet against this kid adding some serious value in the bigs. Until he actually, tangibly stumbles at any point in his development (which he really hasn’t yet..at all), I feel comfortable assuming that is probably a likelihood.

Even Keith Law would probably think that sort of de facto scouting report was breakneck & he wouldn’t be wrong.

by Matt0330 on Jul 27, 2011 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah man, keep ripping on Mike Newman as a scout, that'll make you look good

You clearly learn far more about a guy from looking at a box score than you do by watching him play. Why don’t you tell us about Goldschmidt’s HR tonight…what pitch did it come off of? Did he turn on a good fastball or did he hit a mistake offspeed pitch that Delgado left up?

Hey, who remembers when Chris Carter hit .337 in AA with 67 XBHs…clearly the people who said he didn’t have the bat speed to hit like that against MLB pitchers had no idea what they were talking about…

Was going for puckish

Or at least playful. It wasn’t meant to ‘rip’ anybody personally but just a fantasy baseball article/line of reasoning that I found flimsy (nothing personal there – aren’t we permitted to question things in general? Isn’t that a big part of the thrust of this?) that I figured a lot of folks wouldn’t be familiar with.

I was hopeful that the humor was apparent but it seems it wasn’t. My apologies to all if miconstrued (obviously).

by Matt0330 on Jul 27, 2011 12:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Sorry if I misinterpreted

But yeah it came off kind of condescending, like obviously this guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Not sure exactly what you found flimsy about his reasoning either. He questioned Goldschmidt’s bat speed (he’s not the first) and provided video of him swinging and missing at a bunch of fastball strikes. That seems like anything but flimsy reasoning.

by nixa37 on Jul 27, 2011 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I hear you

There’s a frequent sarcasm undercurrent on this blog (that I dig & try to contribute to) but I probably flew too close to the sun here.

I visit Mike’s (the SAL guy) blog & he’s high on other guys I like a lot (Nolan Arenado for example) & I like to see his takes on prospects who I’ve seen in SS as they make their next steps or others (like Arenado) that I haven’t. it was nothing personal & the bat speed/contact stuff has dogged Goldschmidt, yes this is true. I think I just flew with the fact that the article I alluded to devolved into what I thought was akin to a pretty cursory fantasy piece & went a little too far whilst trying to prop up Goldschmidt (a pretty common meme btw – I/m basically his DA Pennebaker or something at this point..). It’s all good.

I see where you're coming from

He was writing a piece for a Roto site, so he made sure to put a roto spin on things, but at its heart I think he makes a pretty strong scouting point on Goldy. I can see how it doesn’t necessarily read quite like a normal scouting report though.

I don't know why comparing to Dunn is bad

I mean the guy has been a solid player, but he’s only averaged 2.54 WAR per season over his ten season career, not exactly an insurmountable figure. I don’t hear anyone saying Goldy is a future HoFer (and Dunn certainly is not).

http://www.crawfishboxes.com

by OremLK on Jul 27, 2011 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions

It isn't

I think that a lot of people would crtique Goldschmidt unnecessarily though if he settles into a lesser career than Dunn (which I would expect as I don’t feel that WAR accurately encapsulates Adan Dunn’s essence) if that comparison was too commonplace. There’s still a lot of value in being a major league regular that isn’t the middle of the order bat that Dunn is/was to me.

The dude was barely drafted out of HS & was an eighth rounder who signed for less than $100K out of Texas State. If he cared about the claims of the hoi polloi, he wouldn’t be where he is.

Goldschmidt – 1/3 with 3 BBs, 3 R, 3 RBI & the aforementioned jack. Hitting a very un-Russell Branyan-esque .306 at the moment with sublime thumping #s.

Tyler Skaggs – 6 IP, 6 K, 1 R, 5 baserunners permitted

The phrase as we used it when I was growing was the more logical “couldn’t care less”. Interesting how it’s “evolved”. Now it’s along the lines of saying “He did a total 360!” when the speaker actually means 180.

I kind of dig in a slang nerd sort of way. It reads like a contracted “another” being used in place of “other”. There was a reasonably strong consensus

heading into the draft that he’d be a quick mover as a reliever, and between the issues with the change you mention, problems with pacing as a starter, and some injuries, it makes some sense. You’ve also got a FB that gains significant velo in relief. His rep for having good command seems borne out by his performance this year.

Now has an 87:11 K:BB in 59 IP with 36 hits and that was just his second homer allowed this season. Just…wow.

First career RBI by Prcotor and fell on his face out of the box. The ball beat the runner home by about 5 steps and the catcher “missed” his tag on the runner. Seriously one of the weirdest games I’ve ever seen. Not a single run scored from bottom of the third until the bottom of the 19th and then the winning run scores on what looked like a completely blown call by the home plate umpire (perhaps he just wanted it to be over and didn’t see either team getting another chance to score for another 15 innings).

While he almost certainly did tag him

There isn’t exactly much, if any, contact between the glove and leg in that pic.

by nixa37 on Jul 27, 2011 2:12 AM EDT up reply actions

and here's another angle...

the glove is clearly bent back by contact with the leg

sucks that it happened for your team...this year of all years...

every other game the past 20 years it wouldnt have matter…now, 1 game could be the difference. and not talking shit…i say this as a royals fan…and that being said, i’d be livid if it had happened even when we’re awful

Really hate that the game had to end on such a contentious play

Would have much rather had him called out and hopefully the Braves would have pulled it out anyway.

by nixa37 on Jul 27, 2011 2:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I fear

MLB has lost many fans tonight, and I may be one of them. I know I will get ripped here, etc, but this is absolutely inexcusable. With the history of the Pirates they way it is (I’ve never seen a winning season I can say I remember) this is the ultimate sucker punch.

I blame no one in particular and would have had no problem had the Braves won legitimately (and clearly, they still might have, including have guys on 1st and 2nd with 2 out – assuming McKenry couldn’t throw out proctor who stumbled out of the box).

It was just a well fought game that had a horrible ending. If MLB has any decency, they will find a way to make this right. It’s not nearly the same stage (regular season MLB game), but this reeks of the controversy that absolutely devastated Ireland when there was a clear hand-ball not called by the referee.

I hope MLB can figure out how to address this issue, aside from admittance that this was a bad call. This game needs to be played as if Lugo was out and Jerry Meals needs to be demoted or given time off. I don’t want to suggest firing him, because I hope that he simply missed the call (although the thought lingers in the back of my mind to the contrary; personal or otherwise agendas were supplanted for a fairly called game), but this call is indicative of a horrible job performance and he needs to be reprimanded, similar to any other job.

I realize it is late and I’m probably speaking in anger, but I am so completely jaded and disillusioned currently that I have a hard time supporting MLB in its current and broken state.

Well, I’ve got that off my chest. Good night.

I'm sorry, but in no way is a replay from that point or anything of the sort in order

Besides that really wouldn’t even be fair to the Braves at this point unless you somehow make D. McCutchen throw 5.2 innings in a live game or whatever right before he has to go back out there and try to get the last out of the inning.

Yeah, it sucks that the game was decided on a call like that, but they’re not going to suddenly go out and change every rule in the books just so that the Pirates don’t feel wronged.

by nixa37 on Jul 27, 2011 3:13 AM EDT up reply actions

How

is this significantly different from what they did with George Brett and the pine-tar on the bat. I honestly don’t know, so I’m asking. I’m too apathetic to look it up, but that protest worked.

Either way, just make Joel Hanrahan come in (he was up and warm) to make the D. Cutch point moot. It’s not about feeling wronged either. It’s about being wronged.

Da'Sean Butler - A Mountaineer Legend

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jul 27, 2011 3:16 AM EDT up reply actions

The umpire misinterpreted the rule

He called Brett out for using an illegal bat when the rule book never said anything about that. It simply said an illegal could be pointed out before it was used and the umpire could take it out of the game. It didn’t say the bat could be challenged after use and the player retroactively called out.

If Hanrahan was up, I must have missed it. I don’t remember hearing them say it, but I trust you on that. Still no guarantee he would have actually come in then.

by nixa37 on Jul 27, 2011 3:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh

Ok. Fair enough. We were never gonna win the Central anyway.

I hope you

live on the ground floor, Cutch! It’s one game, the Pirates have been doing great all year, don’t panic. If they make a couple of trades (#3 or better starter, COF bat) I think they have a real shot.

still feel as pissed and as shitty now as I did yesterday. Hopefully the players galvanize or something.. I dunno.

Sorry, man

I know how frustrating that can be. It would be worse if this were later in the year. Pirates still have a lot of time and perhaps some moves to make. It’s a shame to let one call in July ruin what’s been an incredible season.

by blackoutyears on Jul 27, 2011 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Especially when it supposedly got the team real fired up

Sounds like they’re looking to use this as motivation to make a run for the rest of the season. Hopefully it works out like that.

by nixa37 on Jul 27, 2011 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

The Pirates are the only team in the Central I’ll root for if/when the Reds are out of it.

by blackoutyears on Jul 27, 2011 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I say this while admitting a tag was almost certainly made

I don’t see any contact there. Glove doesn’t look bent at all. Impossible to tell if he’s touching him or if the glove is just an inch in front of his leg.

After seeing the replay over and over again from every conceivable angle I have yet to see a point where the glove clearly makes contact with Lugo’s leg. Like I said, I’m pretty sure it did and I can’t believe he got called safe anyway, but I have yet to see anything that convinces me a tag was definitely made.

by nixa37 on Jul 27, 2011 2:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Come

on man. Watch any live replay. It’s clear he swipes his leg fairly thoroughly. The contact is minimal, but it is obvious and extended enough that it’s not even remotely questionable for anyone with an ounce of objectivity.

I’m sick right now. MLB should fix this, or it will seriously damage the fanbase in Pittsburgh.

I'm

sorry, and I appreciate you trying to be diplomatic. My words were inflammatory. Forgive me. I’m livid mixed with depressed right now (a weird, weird feeling – I’m not remotely tired and will probably stay up all night now).

This is the type of game that literally ruins an entire season. Not from a record standpoint, but from an enthusiasm standpoint. I have no desire to watch a game be played tomorrow.

Da'Sean Butler - A Mountaineer Legend

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Jul 27, 2011 3:05 AM EDT up reply actions

No worries man

I completely understand where you’re at right now. I’d probably be pissed too. If you want to look on the bright side, it didn’t look like either team was going to score for at least another 5-10 innings so at least you guys didn’t end up throwing one of your other starters out there and wasting him.

by nixa37 on Jul 27, 2011 3:09 AM EDT up reply actions

There's

no brightside dude. I know you are trying to help and be nice, but this isn’t what’s supposed to happen.

I’d rather have 20 more losing seasons in a row, and I honestly-to-God mean this, than have a good season ruined by something as bad as that. I would have rather lost 35-0.

Now we will get swept out by y’all, then drop 2 or 3 against Philly, and fall apart down the stretch. Another losing season will come, and Pittsburgh will just quit. The players, the town, everything.

That’s probably being melodramatic. But unless we rally to win 4 or 5 of the next 6, and this game stands. It will absolutely ruin baseball for the city of Pittsburgh this year. This is like the ball going through damn Billy Buckner’s legs.

I’m 99% sure I won’t watch another game the rest of the season. I don’t want to. I want nothing to do with baseball; I’m now glad the lockout is over, so baseball can go back to being a backburner sport. It’s atrociously run and it squeezes all hope out of a small-market team that tries it’s darndest to compete until it runs into the buzzsaw that was that shitastically bad call.

Thanks for bearing with me.

Get to sleep and reevaluate everything tomorrow

I don’t think you’ll feel quite as bad then. Who knows, maybe this will galvanize the team and get them headed in the right direction. Maybe this is where Pittsburgh really wakes up and takes over the Central. Its certainly not a reason to completely quit on the season.

I really do wish you guys the best. I was at the Sid Bream game when it all started going down hill for you guys (I was 6 at the time) and its crazy for me looking back and thinking about how bad its been for you guys since then. I really can’t even imagine what its like. I hope for your sake and the city’s sake they turn things around. Even if they don’t, they’re clearly a team on the rise and you should look forward to the future.

by nixa37 on Jul 27, 2011 3:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Heh

I can’t sleep. I’ve already called into my boss and told him I won’t be into work tomorrow.

I’ve watched the Steelers lose two super bowls, the Pens lose a stanley cup, and WVU lose to Pitt in the final game of the season with a trip to the national championship (I was at that game).

None of those felt as bad as this.

Yeah that's kind of unnecessary

I agree that he’s probably taking it a little harder than he should, but then again I don’t really know what its like to be a fan of a team that’s gone almost 20 years without a winning season. Give him a break

by nixa37 on Jul 27, 2011 3:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I felt like this when I watched the first 5-10 replays

The more replays I’ve seen, the less sure I am that he ever actually touched him. I just haven’t seen a single point in a replay where I can say, “alright, there, I can tell his glove moved because it made contact with his leg.” Like I said, I’m 99% sure he did make contact at some point, but I’m just not seeing anything on the replay that proves it

by nixa37 on Jul 27, 2011 3:08 AM EDT up reply actions

and people wonder why Buster Posey had to get hurt

This is the alternative to trying to hit the catcher as hard as you can to dislodge the ball. Turned out well for the Braves anyways, I guess.

I think the sky-is-falling talk here about the consequences of the game’s ending are, to say the least, wildly overblown. I don’t see anybody walking away from the game over this.

That Dwyer start is nuts

He’s been uniformly awful the last month outside of the last two starts, and this one sticks out like Rick Santorum at a GLAAD rally.

Wheeler

Any chances to asess his defense? I’d really like to get a look at his plate approach. He’s all numbers on a page for me at this point.

by blackoutyears on Jul 27, 2011 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Not much to report on Wheeler's D

Wheeler took a few pitches but was pretty aggressive. Not much to really report after one game.

by Jeff Reese on Jul 27, 2011 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

The aggression doesn't surprise me

He’s struck out in bunches throughout the year, while still maintaining a whiff rate just this side of acceptable.

by blackoutyears on Jul 27, 2011 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I seem to recall you asking me about him a few days back, but I forgot to respond

Didn’t really get a read on his defense either, so I’ll refrain from speaking on that. I don’t think it’s out of the question that he sticks in CF, though.

His approach is more of a decider with him for me than his defensive projection, anyways. I get the impression that he’s made a living this year off of waiting for his pitch and then taking big cuts. I think his power will hold up at higher levels (especially in Colorado), but I’ll be interested to see if his BA is going to be there.

by mrkupe on Jul 27, 2011 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

ESPN is reporting Wheeler!

That’s a bitter pill if I’m a Giants fan. Best case scenario if I’m a Met.

by blackoutyears on Jul 27, 2011 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't know Giants will likely sign Beltran, extend him a few years

If Wheeler + a couple a fringe’s is all they give up I say not bad.

If Brown + another nice prospect or two, Surkamp, Sanchez – I say would have been a little worse

~David Kahn is pretty much clueless~
Twins top 11 ~ Gibson, Sano, Hendriks, Hicks, Arcia, Salcedo, Benson, Michael, Kepler, Rosario, Gutierrez ~

Span in Left, Revere in Center, Delmon / Kubel in RF
Cuddyer 1B , Morneau DH in 2012

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Jul 27, 2011 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Extend Beltran?

That may actually be more depressing than just giving up your best pitching prospect for a stretch rental. Not sure I trust him to be this guy when he’s in his late 30s.

I’d rather have Wheeler than any of the other prospects you mention. Give me the lottery ticket over the solid depth package.
