Where Are They Now?

John — Have you ever thought about catching up with former prospects?

list reviews

I have done a lot of old top 50 retrospectives over the years, although none recently. Prospect Retros/Career Profiles kind of do this too.

Can we get a look at Jeff Karstens

and how he went from a guy where it wasn’t ou tthe range of possibilities that he would end up in AAA at the start of the season. To a guy who is 5th in the NL in ERA with a 2.55 ERA

Players who should be in the Hall of Fame: Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Jack Butler, Greg Lloyd, Andy Russell, Cris Carter, Kevin Greene, Curtis Martin, Willie Roaf, Andre Reed and Jerry Kramer

Tim Wheeler

I’d love your thoughts on him. Is it a breakout year, or just a good year? You gave him a c+ in your book and said “if he can get the bat going in Double-A, he has a shot at being a regular”. Did he do that?

by noelman31 on Jul 13, 2011 10:38 PM EDT reply actions

He's a bum, KAP...

You should trade him to the team with the 2nd worst record in your league…immediately…lol

I still cant believe people think highly of Montero

D’Arnuad has great D and is tearing up AA. Montero cant field and now he cant hit. He a back end top 50 at best. Face the facts, he sucks

Really?

Anyone in the Top 50 by definition does not suck.

Sanchez has been more disappointing than Montero this season. If you don’t put much stock into Montero’s prior performance with the bat much and ARL and the myraid scouting reports, I still don’t get why you would put Sanchez above him.

You still have faith in Perez? Why?

Prospect Showdown: Future Closer Potential Edition

I’d like to see a comparison on these 4 relief pitchers: Rex Brothers, Chance Ruffin, Brad Boxberger and Addison Reed and see if any have a shot at making as a closer in the majors.

I think you did at one time…

Sorry for continuing to promote this idea, but I’d really like to see a retrospective on the great Billingsley/Cain/Garza debate from circa 2005. Interestingly, they all have turned out somewhat similarly (though their ERA+ measures are quite different, their peripherals and stuff are very similar and FIP/xFIP thinks they’re about equivalent for their careers).

A weekly power rankings?

Top 50 prospects based on their individual performances? This would give us a snapshot idea of how they are doing. There is a real paucity of info on day to day performances of prospects. It would give us a real idea of how they are doing week to week. Kind of like the BA ‘hot sheet’ but with the top 50 their stats that week with a sentence or two on how they’ve done that week if warranted. My two cents. Thank you for this site. The best minor league coverage I have found.

MiLB league profiles

john, i’m sorry to have posted this for what is now for the third time, if you don’t want to do it for whatever reason it’s understandable but i think we’d all benefit from short concise profiles on the various leagues of the minors, especially the ones that are not neutral and benefit hitting in general or homeruns or suppress homeruns and benefit pitching

i know we focus a lot on prospects around here and not this type of things, but when we try our hand at putting up a rankings list and doing some real analysis like you expertly do, this infortmation would be extremely useful, and i’d especially trust it coming from someone like you john

too be clear, not asking for profiles on players in each milb league, but just on whether it benefits hitting/pitching or some particularly hitter-friendly, homer-friendly, homer-suppressent, or pitcher-friendly ballparks within those leagues

Risers and Fallers

Which prospects have gained significantly moving into the Top 50/100 and which Top 50/100 prospects have seen their stock drop precipitously out of Top 100 consideration.

by Traindogger on Jul 14, 2011 10:12 AM EDT reply actions

Was going to mention something similar

It’d be nice to see a “Trending Up/Down” type of articles that discuss recent movers. It seems you already incorporate some of this into your minor league reports but I think it deserves it’s own series. Perhaps it could have a more predictive slant.

As for a specific player, I’d like to see something on Josh Smith of Dayton.

Community Prospect List Review

We’ve done a community prospect list for a few years now, how about reviewing some of those.

Surprise successes

we all know that most specs never hit the majors. the ones that do usually have been long expected to do so. i’m curious about trends in makeup/numbers/niche/etc that allow guys that are never really expected to succeed at the mlb level to do just that.

the example i have from this year isn’t some unknown guy, but certainly unheralded. i don’t think anyone was looking for his performance to remain at this level, both after his callup and after a trip to the dl.

darwin barney is the guy, but know there are lots of other surprise successes out there. John, are there things to look for…beyond sleeper stats? not sure barney would have even landed on a sleeper board.
