Age ranges by level
Scott Lucas has a nice post up about ages/levels over at The Ranger Rundown. It’s Ranger-centric, of course, but there is a lot of good info there including a graph showing the age ranges by level.

HAPPY CANADA DAY!!!
The Royals in Ottawa today (Kate Middleton is a hottie. Well done Prince William!) and an afternoon Jays game. Sweet!
Lots of good hurlers going today, too.
Some others
Probables of at least some interest:
Patrick Corbin (AA)
Tyler Thornburg, Drew Hutchison (Hi A)
Garrett Gould (A)
Noah Syndergaard in the APP. 13K in 9 scoreless IP thus far.
Ditto
Not based on anything really, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Milwaukee transitioned him into a bullpen arm at the major league level in the short run. Granted, he’s very new to Hi-A ball, but he’s almost 23 & his repertoire would likely play well in short relief.
he is giving them
no reason to do so…he dominated low A and although it was only one start in HI-A, it was impressive.
his name sounds really cool
Powerful.

Buckel
Anyone get Hellickson vibes from this dude?
I wouldn't put that on him so early.
He’s got a good FB that he can run up to 93-94, but usually sits 90-92 I believe. He has a slurve type of breaking ball. I don’t know about a CH.
You can’t really trust the announcers, but they said he is able to do some different things with both his FB and breaking ball. They said he throws 3 versions of each, to include a 4seam FB and cutter. Didn’t say the other. They also said he throws 3 breaking balls, but i would assume it’s the same pitch, that just breaks a little differently depending on the speed. Who knows how accurate any of this is or how consistent he is with them. Might be able to get Mike Newman @ScoutingTheSal to give a report. He should be at the game tonight.
Really like Buckel
Pitchability guy with some projection left.
by blackoutyears on Jul 1, 2011 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions
He hit 93 MPH the 4 or 5 times the announcer commented on his velocity.
Who knows how accurate that is though. He was said to get into the low 90s when he was drafted, he just wasn’t able to maintain the velocity after a few innings. He’d be down to the upper 80s. Tonight the announcer had him at 93 in the 5th. It will be interesting to see if Mike Newman has similar readings.
I believe the velo to some degree
The projection out of h.s. by some was up to mid-90s at his peak.

milb.com article on his start tonight
Interesting note on a friendship he has with Trevor Bauer. I didn’t know this before, but it certainly makes sense. I had always kind of connected their pitching styles, but didn’t realize he has clearly taken alot of the things Bauer actually does and uses them himself.
"I’d love to walk in and hug everybody every day, but that’s not critical to us winning." The JeDi
The announcer have also said multiple times that he has worked with Barry Zito.
He credits Zito for teaching him his CB.

JJ Cooper is high on Hutchison
John Havok (Lethbridge AB): Drew Hutchison was on a lot of sleeper lists this year, is it safe to say that he’s now a legit prospect worthy of top 100 status? Where would you slot him today on the Jays farm rankings?
J.J. Cooper: I’ve been screaming his name since spring training. He’s legit. A definite Top 10 prospect in the Blue Jays system and a guy we’re talking about for our Midseason Top Prospects update.
Arodys Vizcaino
He was scheduled to pitch game 2 of a double header last night, but was scratched. Today Milb doesn’t have him listed as the probable either. Anyone know why?

Liria
so far, 5 shutout, 2 h, 6 K’s, 1:5 GO/FO. I think he’s done (4-5 is about what he’s going these days). On a shortseason squad with a lot of intriguing arms (Cruz, Kim, Reed, Wang, Wells all hold fairly high levels of intrigue for me), he might be near the top of the list.
Agreed
They certainly don’t lack interesting arms. Liria’s first three innings were perfect. Definitely his best start.

a lot of folks in that boat...
I never thought he would be a multi-dimensional star, a la McCutchen, but a few 20-20 seasons seemed to be a reasonable expectation for him coming out of the minors. His K% rates were never awful (15-20%) thought he needed to up his BB% a bit – this year (9.5%) is an improvement. He’s only 26, so who knows…

The numbers this year are underwhelming. Is there progress going on under the surface that I’m missing? Just looking for reasons to be encouraged.
Vincent Catricala
Underappreciated talent alert. He’s had a nice little start to his AA stint . . .
3 -3 tonight with a single, double,and a three-run poke – hitting .714 thus far.
I hadn’t heard a about him but, he has hit .300-plus, with pop, at three stops before AA ball. If the Mariners could quiety develop a third baseman that would be so, so great wouldn’t it?
He’s split time between 3b and 1b (and of this year) but, his basic numbers haven’t been bad at third-base.

He looked really good
His fastball had excellent life and just got hitters to hit ground ball after ground ball. The change wasn’t bad; it was just good enough for hitters to have something else to look for. He overthrew it at times, but he did get some swinging strikes. It seemed like he only threw the slider a couple times. One in particular looked good.
The command could use some tightening, but it was impressive how he took over that game off the strength of his fastball.

71 of his 113 offerings for strikes but only 13 of his secondary pitches per Colorado’s internal breakdown. Dude located his filthy fastball consistently spotting it low & to both sides of the plate & it was all ground balls, all the time. Big time performance.
Nice shot by Charlie Blackmon too on his first career MLB HR which he launced to right CF off of Joakim Soria.

How’s his defense in LF? Can he be at least adequate?
by John Black on Jul 2, 2011 2:13 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
according to reports
he won’t be an asset out there initially, but he shouldn’t be a disaster. He’s a hard worker and has made a lot of improvements at 1B and 3B over the last couple of years. Wouldn’t surprise me if he became adequate in LF over time.

Should Min be aggressive and promote Hicks?
Hot streak has pushed his average up to a respectable .280, yet his power is still lacking. No reason to rush him, but I’d be interested in how this streak translates in AA.
Hicks
been doing very well overall since the 1st month, though I’d be surprised if he got anything more than a cup of coffee in AA. They did have him repeat Low A for all of last year after all.
Yeah
I know the Twins are very cautious with developing prospects, but you think it would be a boost of confidence for Hicks to be promoted right at the time he’s heating up. Though, I don’t disagree with keeping him in Hi-A
Hicks probably deserves a promotion
But I definitely wouldn’t expect it. Perhaps at the end of they year for a cup of coffee, but I doubt any sooner.
