An Article on Anthony Rizzo

So there was some good buzz on the article I wrote on Dustin Ackley.

I have done another similar piece, this time on Anthony Rizzo, a player most people expect to be called up within the next week or so.  (We'll see about that, who knows for sure?)

I appreciate any feedback you want to give me on the article, what you think of Rizzo and the like.

Here is an excerpt:

If the top 100 prospects were to be re-ordered 2 months into the season, I believe that Rizzo would find his name jump from 75, into the top 20 at least.  He's very young for his league, and perhaps the best hitter in the PCL.  He doesn't play in a hitter park, but his power numbers have been phenomenal.  He won't make as much contact as Adrian Gonzalez, but he may actually possess more raw power.  Like Gonzalez, he sprays the balls to all fields, and if you want to succeed in PETCO, you need to be able to hit the ball everywhere.

By adding in the power this season, he's become a generational talent.  I believe that Rizzo will fill in admirably for Gonzalez in the short-term, and perhaps be a complete replacement of that production in the long-term.  It's a lofty goal, but honestly he's the best young hitter they've had since they originally acquired Gonzalez.

It won't be long before Rizzo is up.  With the Padres seemingly out of contention this season, there is no reason for them to rush Rizzo to the majors until the Super Two deadline is clearly passed.  This could mean an early July call-up and a half-season in the majors if all goes well.

Thanks for the feedback.

Great work man

Why don’t you post the article here? It is definitely front page material.

Thanks.

I really appreciate John putting my Ackley article on the front page, and I love getting it exposed to as many different people as possible.

But I also think that given the opportunity to get to write regularly at FakeTeams, I owe them the traffic and it is also beneficial to me to get the traffic. I hope John doesn’t think I’m just piggy-backing minorleagueball to get exposure to faketeams, but I also appreciate the feedback from here as well and I know that a Rizzo article would appeal to the MiLB community.

apparently

his call up is Thursday. He’s not in the lineup again tonight, and Hawpe is once again in RF.

I read that too...

.. but I also was watching the Rox vs the Padres. I’m a Rockies fan, but I hate their announcers, so I watch the away TV cast. Dick Enberg was interviewing the Padres GM during the game and he asked point blank if Rizzo was being called up, and he wouldn’t answer the question. Then he asked “soon?” And then he said “this week?” They laughed about it and no answer was given, but the way that they were talking about it, it’s happening assuming all goes well with his MRI. I would guess the Padres are being cautious with what is being called a bruised hand, and you can’t blame them…

Have to read the whole article

but I’m already wondering about “more raw power” than Gonzalez. I enjoyed the Ackley piece, and as a long-time Rizzo supporter I’m even more interested in this one.
