Go steward and go Jenkins,

Poor Jenkins good pitcher on a pretty good team, with a great Era, and a horrible horrbile record? wierd.

Jenkins record is 3-5 with a 2.78 ERA, pretty good but probably just not getting the run support.

Daniel Tillman

Anyone have any ideas, or better yet links, as to why he’s suddenly pitching out of the bullpen after throwing very effectively in the rotation for the first month and a half?

I realize that he was drafted as a reliever and, to a certain extent projects there, but LAA said they were going to try him in the rotation and he did pretty well there. Seems odd to move him back after a month and a half.

by Guyute on Jun 3, 2011 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

To limit innings? Just a guess.

Just seems kind of early

Innings are the first thing I thought too but why not wait until midseason or whenever. Is he going to throw out of the bullpen the rest of the year? Does he go from starting to relieving and back to starting? If so, that seems like some unnecessary jerking around.

Odd timing is all.

good point

Lee completely slipped my mind. And to be perfectly honest I don’t know much about him, I’ve never had him on my personal radar. But from what I’ve read around here he is definitely legit. Machado I still see as the #1 based on the power potential and relatively the complete package and he is meeting the expectations of him. Profar is 2nd to me (because I don’t know much about Lee) and because he is showing a great slg% for someone his size and proving the nay sayers wrong. And he’s doing this consistantly, not in like a 2 week binge. Also the bb/k ratio is spectacular, I honestly didn’t know his plate discipline was that good. He is out performing everyone’s expectations so everyone is scrambling to project what type of player he will be, but whatever it is he looks to be really great. Additionally, between him and machado depending on how much machado bulks up i believe profar has the better chance to stay in the middle infield either at ss or 2b. I have no documented proof of this, this is just my personal gut feeling (somewhat influenced by the AROD comps)

The jump to AA is the hardest in the minors. So though it was just good from a Miller start it was a great sign that his first start he was able to put a solid line together. The kid is going to be a star.

I am starting to like it, actually.....

Taking the injury concerns out of it (since they are unpredictable, to say the least), I would rather have and the Pirates need an ace moreso than a stud 3B, which I believe Rendon can be. If Cole sports two pitches that are both plus-plus, which most say he does, then I trust out development staff to teach fb command down in the zone like they are currently doing with Jameson. If Law and others, including guys that I trust, have Cole above Jameson right now, I can’t see how the Bucs pass some like that up.

Cole, Heredia, Jameson, and Allie…….consider me stoked.

Please no injuries, God……..

by rblythepittsteel on Jun 4, 2011 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Not my money, so my pick would be Bundy.

However, I understand that the pick probably should be Rendon or Cole. The Pirates have seen the medical records of Rendon, apparently, and if the injury is legitimately scary, then I agree with the Cole pick.

Never seen the guy in my life, but his stuff is said to be absolutely filthy, and he should move relatively quickly. Pirates might have the highest upside group of pitchers in the minors next week.

Cubs

Iowa loses to Nashville, 5-1.

Alberto Cabrera: 5 ip, 8 h (1 solo HR), 2 bb, 1 HBP, hit by 1 pitch, 9:3 GO/FO, 5 R, 1 K.
Moves like Cabrera’s bump to AAA and LeMahieu’s bump to the majors get me frustrated. The latter needed regular AB’s, regular PT, IMO, something he wasn’t going to get in the bigs, particularly when the intent was for him to fill Jeff Baker’s role. The former was struggling in AA, which wasn’t surprising. Some thought he was bumped up due to some system movement that had occurred, and would go back down when things settled. The other possibility might be a “sink or swim” situation in regards to Alberto staying as a starter (as he always profiled as a potential pen arm).

Huntsville blasts Tennessee 7-2.

Brett Jackson: 1/4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI. I’ll take positives where I can find them – HR and 2nd game where he hasn’t struck out, after striking out 6 times in his first three games after coming back.

Charlotte hammers Daytona, 10-2. Odd series, blowouts every game. Nothing really notable on the player front.

Great Lakes beat Peoria, 4-3.

Matt Szczur: 1/4, 1 K, 1 CS.
Ryan Cuneo: 2/4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K.
Graham Hicks: 5 ip, 6 h, 1 bb, 1 WP, 5:4 GO/FO, 1 R, 3 K’s.

DSL Orioles beat DSL Cubs 1, 5-2.

Jefrrey Baez: 1/3, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 K, 2 SB.
Francisco “Daniel” Sanchez – 2/4, 1 BB, 2 K, E.

DSL Cubs 2 lost to DSL Rangers

Carlos Penalver: 2/3, 1 R, 2 BB, CS. Normally wouldn’t make a comment on DSL, but Ben Badler tweeted about Penalver (positively) a few times tonight. One of the rare Cubs big LA signings (550 K is big for the Cubs down there).
Jeimer Candelario: 2/4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K.

DSL Cubs 2 is typically the weaker Cubs squad, but Penalver/Candelario/Antonio Gonzalez were three of the Cubs bigger signings there in 2010.

Other note: In case it wasn’t noted, Robert Whitenack is going to have Tommy John. Big blow, as he had really broken through, with his velocity jumping, and his consistency on his secondary pitches improving. Bruce Miles noted on his blog that there was spec he could’ve gotten a September call-up. There’s some talk that Dallas Beeler, a very intriguing arm in his own right, could head to AA.

re:

first off, thanks.

2nd, the garza trade. i thought the value was fine, and i understood the trade. Didn’t love it, as I thought the Cubs gave up a lot of good young pieces, and I didn’t think they were ready to contend this year. I do think Chirinos will be in the bigs and likely as a starting catcher. I think Archer will make the bigs in some role. I thought Guyer was more of a 4th OF pre-trade, but dang if I’m starting to change my mind on that a bit. Lee should, at least, be a good glove shortstop.

That said, Garza is a piece that could be around if the Cubs develop another core so it isn’t as if I thought the Cubs were robbed.
