now im just starting to sense some jealousy

The rays farm system isn’t the greatest thing ever but its pretty good and the people bashing rays fans are more prominent than the rays commenters maniac just said that the lower levels are stacked and they are, should we pretend that they aren’t full of high draft picks

by Dbullsfan on Jun 22, 2011 11:37 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

from the last few weeks all i've seen is when

someone offers an opinion on a Rays prospect that differs from what Rays fans think, they get 3-4 posts back about how that prospect is pretty much going to be a superstar and how wrong their opinion is. Anyone mentioning Tim Beckham is likely to start a 50 post long debate about his greatness. To me (and maybe others), I see Rays posters that think there are no Rays prospects that will not become superstars, from Beckham to Jennings to some minor leaguer in the VSL with a 1.300 OPS that makes it to a Top 50-100 list. It’s not jealousy, it’s absurdity.

The Rays have such high draft picks because they are cheap and don’t make any effort to hold onto the players that they developed once they make it past their rookie salaries/arbitration years. Of course your minor leagues are going to be stacked when that happens over and over.

Now that part, I can agree with. Give me a scouting report on him and maybe I’ll take notice, not meaningless VSL statistics.

What?

You know what? You brought up a great example. THe Rays fans defended Beckham, and look what he is doing this year.

I’m trying to find someone to accompany me to the game, but evidently I’m the only one that gives a shit about a player in A ball.

High A is playing,

The great prospect of Deck Mcguire is playing anyone know why he is pulled after 4.1 innings? he had 4 strike outs and 1 walk? did he get hurt?

by Jt Malley on Jun 22, 2011 9:07 PM EDT reply actions

Rudy Owens hurt as well

Hit on hand by a line drive. To be fair though, he may have done it intentionally to get pulled, as he was getting raped.

Excellent start for Nick Kingham

Pitching for short season State College of the Pirates. Per Tim Williams:

Kingham is done. 70 pitches, 52 for strikes. 5 IP 5 H 1 R 1 ER 0 BB 8 K. Kevin Kleis on to pitch.
Kingham struck out the side in the 5th. All three on curveballs, two looking. Froze the hitters each time.

I was

coming here to post this. Kingham pitched very well. Owens looked terrible. He needs a DL stint or something to clear his head. I’d be really interested in getting information about his velocity.

The good news in Indy was Justin Wilson came in as a relief pitcher in place of Rudy and went

2.2, 2H, 1BB, 5K.

Yeah, saw three of his starts this year

He has a ridiculously good sinker, a curve ball that shows swing and miss ability, a solid change & a projectable body. Control issues at times but that’s to be expected as a true freshman pitching on Fridays. He looked like a future first rounder.

by Jeff Reese on Jun 22, 2011 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Wait

So you like Kingham better than Allie (Allie is a RHP correct?)? That’s certainly a defensible position, just one I’ve not heard before.

I was speaking only about the Pirates draft class

The mistake was made because they seemed to just pick projectable RHP after projectable RHP. Kingham was my favorite of that bunch. Allie doesn’t fit that mold, I just forgot about it him when I made that comment.

Kingham

It’s very, very good to hear that Kingham’s curve is looking good. Coming out of HS, the word was that the change was his best secondary, and there were a lot of questions about whether he could spin a decent curve. I liked him a lot when he was drafted, but if the curve is working now too, I might really develop a thing for him.

There is the “golden sombrero” if you have 4 strikeouts in one game.

From now on, if someone goes 2 for 4 can we just say they went “Altuve”?

Having a really rough time in Double-A, but he’s got an eight-game hitting streak (11 for 30) and had a triple yesterday and homer #3 today. Of course he also has an 8:0 K:BB. Lots of work to do.

by blackoutyears on Jun 22, 2011 11:56 PM EDT reply actions

Not minor leaguers (or even prospects)

but Chris Heisey had an amazing three-homer game tonight (yeah, it was David Gordon and Hector Noesi, but still) and Ryan Vogelsong’s unlikely dream season continues as he’s one-hitting the Twins through six, and that’s with one strikeout. If he keeps this up I wonder if Bochy gets him on the All-Star roster somehow.

KO?

Did the minor league team have a mid-inning boxing match? If so, Trout’s a pretty big dude, I pity whoever took that punishment.

And of course there’s a question about it! That’s the beauty of prospecting and baseball in general: nothing is certain, nothing is black and white. Prospecting is more complex than that, and seeing anything that clear cut obscures how bloody brilliant that uncertainty is.

He is dominating AA

A ton of top prospect struggle in their 1st go round in AA. He is also by far the youngest player in the league, hitting for power in a pitchers park, stealing bags left and right. Harper has a ton of power, but he isn’t a complete player like Trout is. Also Harper is a jackass with a bad makeup, which is a complete non issue with Trout. Sure Harper is tearing up A-BALL, which Trout did as well. I don’t agree at all with Harper over him. Everyone is so obssesed with POWER POWER POWER

I'm not sure its simply that

or his overall dominance across the board. I mean power can only take you so far, but he has great discipline, a great swing, and he is also young for the league. I think power is just he kicker. Other than that, they could be, like someone else said, 1a and 1b.

And 20 year old OF Jae Hoon Ha hit his 8th High A HR today. Hitting .297/.332/.482 in 53 games and got a small taste of AA ball while Jackson was hurt (hit .267/.320/.444 with 1 HR in 12 G)

Michael Knox

2011 draftee by the Cards just cranked 3 HR today for the GCL club, in only his second game.

It’s forgivable that the community whiffed on him through his first game, given that he was a 41st round draft choice AND he’s got a really bad ARL. First Inning also lists his age as 41 (wow, funny coincidence), which is unusually old for the GCL any way you slice it. But power is power, and if he keeps it up he should be in St Louis by the time he is 45.

Astros Promotions

Jio Mier to A+.
Chris Wallace to AA (keep half an eye on this guy).

23-year old Kody Hinze still languishing at A+ despite hitting .346/.483/.662 with 61/60 BB/K and a .316 ISO. He also just won the California/Carolina league HR derby, by the way. Not sure why they’re holding him back when they don’t have any actual first base prospects at AA ball. When he finally gets promoted it will be interested to see if he can maintain his power numbers outside of the CAL. Could he perhaps have a higher ceiling than Brett Wallace? He’s showing exceptional plate discipline, but it’s hard to say whether the power is for real or just a product of being slightly old for his league.

I think any and all Astros promotions, outside of SS, are strictly related to when the player is deemed to be “ready”. It’s not like guys are blocked at just about any position.
