Tyler Matzek: Just read this morning that he got demoted Hi A Modesto to A Asheville. Hopefully he can work some things out there. Same thing happened to Aaron Crow last year so maybe Matzek will be up with the big club next year and closing for them in June.

Some others
Bryan Villareal on the mound this morning for Toledo
JJ Hoover back in the SOU & going for Mississippi
Joel Carreno in the EAS (1 ER & 33K in his last 26.1 IP; somewhat underrated arm to me)
Zeke Spruill (has been roughed up his last couple of starts following his shutout a handful of starts ago)
Really hoping brett Cecil has another good start.
he has a good record but his Hr allowed and ERA is pretty bad, i suppose you can knock a bit off because its in the pacific coast league where icould hit homers haha i kid, But i think with 2 or 3 more good starts he might just have a call up.
on another note looking for a big start for Deck McGuire this guy is doing very well in A and if he has another good start or two i also see him possibly being called up to AA.
Going for the Red Sopx organization tonight-
Kyle Weiland in Pawtucket. He has been throwing the ball well of late. With Rich Hill and DiceK out, any more injuries could see him in the bigs.
No one else of real interest. Ryan Pressley and Keith Couch for the single a teams.

I like the K’s are up and BB’s are down… He and Ventura could really see their stock rise in that monster of a farm system.

always need pitchers to step up because some will fail for one reason or another
Ventura, Adam, Yambati, a few others, and whoever they draft next Monday hopefully will lead that group.

excellent point
Let’s not forget the Royals will be contenders sooner rather than later so these great young players that are buried under the elite names in that system either become replacements when the Royals feel they’re good enough to make trades to improve their Major League squad or they themselves due to their production become trade pieces for themselves. It’s really hard not to be a fan of what’s going on in KC right now. Great for baseball!

It's been a tough year so far,
but he is a baby. Still hard to believe he’s in Double-A despite the fact that he doesn’t turn 21 until December. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t rebound once he gets back. The fact that the weather has finally improved should help too.

Royals confirmed today
That John Lamb is having Tommy John surgery tomorrow. Hoping everything goes well.
he should be fine
TJ surgery is a minor bump in the road these days. Obviously I’m not downplaying the severity of the injury, but with the high success rate of the procedure, I’m confident he will return and work his way back into being one of the better lefty starting pitching prospects.

Devastating...

his stuff is #1 if he can harness it consistently,
falling to a 2/3 or lower will happen because of inconsistency, injuries, lack of command/control etc. His raw stuff excites me though, I remember long long long days of voting him alone on the pitching prospect list.

Zach Walters 4-4 1BB
This guy’s been written off as a utility type because he can play at 2B, SS, and 3B, but it looks to me like he’s got more than enough bat to play everyday at 2B or SS, and could grow into enough power for 3B… 6’2 195 21 yr old with a .308/.396/.516 line. Lots to like about this kid… not sure why he’s continually looked over.

Transitionally nicely this season from reliever to starting pitcher.
Trevor May
Had himself a day. Great pitching matchup between him and Harvey. May finishes with this line: – 8 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 12 K
+1
As my ID states, I’m a bit of a Philly phan. I have loved May for a few years now. I have been a bit concerned with his walks as of late but that comes with the territory, at least the K’s were still there. But this was a real promising performance. I can’t wait until the Phillies A+ team come up to Reading next season. I think I may need to get season tickets for that one!

Only 18 years old, and putting up a line like that in the Midwest League is impressive.
He could fly up prospect lists this season.
Cubs (so far)
Peoria romps over Lansing, 11-5.
Dallas Beeler: 5.2 ip, 5 h, 1 bb, 6 K’s, 2 runs (1 unearned), 1 HBP, 8:1 GO/FO.
Casey Harman: 2.1 shutout, 1 h, 4 K’s, 1:1: GO/FO.
Matt Szczur: 4/6, 3 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 SB.
Arismendy Alcantara: 3/5, 2 R, 1 SB, 2 CS, 1 PO.
Ryan Cuneo: 3/4, 3 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB.
Micah Gibbs: 3/4, 2 BB.
Charlotte romped over Daytona, 10-1.
Evan Crawford: 2/4, 1 K, 1 CS.
Justin Bour: 2/3, 1 2B, E.
Tennessee is leading Huntsville, 3-2 in the 8th.
Brett Jackson: 1/3, 1 BB, 1 CS.
Ryan Flaherty: 1/3, 1 2B, 1 BB.
Nelson Perez: 3/3, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI.
Trey McNutt: 2 ip, 4 h, 1 bb, 2 R, 1 WP, 2:3 GO/FO.
Jeff Beliveau: 2 ip, 1 h, 3 K’s, 1:1 GO/FO.
Nasvhille is ahead of Iowa, 12-10 in the 6th.
Welington Castillo: 2/4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K’s.
Quick thoughts/comments:
Daytona had 5 FSL AS (would’ve been 6 had Ha not gone up).
Brett Jackson has really scuffled since coming back. Granted, timing may be a bit off, but he had cooled a bit prior to the injury.
Alcantara is a slick fielding shortstop. Bat’s a big question mark, but he is only 19.
Szczur’s really putting his practice pop into games now. I was hesitant to rank him too high before, but with the weakened system, it’s fair to put him in the top 3, and possibly fair to make a case for top 2.
Another big sleeper entering the year was Dallas Beeler. He’s peaking in the mid-90’s and has good secondary stuff. Will be curious how he handles FSL, which is likely to happen later this year as he gets stretched out a bit more.
Still disappointed the Cubs aren’t trying Harman in the rotation, and I’m not going to read too much into a polished college arm carving up Low A, but it is nice to see strong performances like that.

Szczur
Not sure if having him in the top 2 or 3 is a testament to his talent, or how bad the Cubs system really is. It is good to see him show some more pop recently. Being a college kid in low A, I’m not getting too excited about his perfomance… Yet. Things can change tho :)
by John Black on Jun 3, 2011 12:19 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
well
i think it’s a mix of both. been trying to sketch out a rough Cubs top prospects list the last few weeks, and my general feeling is that it’s not that far off from where the system was after the Garza trade last year. So I don’t really view it as a bad system, at least, relative to being a system that might rank at the bottom. all that said, the system does lack top end talent, and is more filled with a crop of “solid” guys right now, mixed in with some upside guys with big questions, so Szczur as a possibility in the top 2/3 is probably reflective upon that as well.
as for his age and a college kid, i agree with not getting too excited, but i would note that he’s 21 (turning 22 in july). That’s a reasonable age, but more importantly, he’s a fairly raw kid. He had 362 AB’s in college while splitting time between two sports. I think what I’m intrigued with, but not ready to go as overboard as others on, is that he’s showing a well-rounded game outside of the power. He takes his pitches, has a good approach at the plate, and doesn’t try to overdo his swings. He runs the bases well and is strong defensively. If the power comes, he’s a really intriguing prospect (even if the power is more the 15 HR variety, as most suspect). If it doesn’t, he still has a shot to work his way up the ladder.
At the rainiers game right now
So far Ackley has struck out and liddi has walked. Ackley also made a great off balanced one handed throw to first
…they should send down Huntington & Nutting, because they aren’t ready, either. - royshowell

We all know he's good but..
Dude doesn’t turn 19 until the middle of October & is hitting .346 (with 29 BB & 43 K) in just under 200 AB in full season ball. 11 SB also & he’s slugging almost .650. He has the potential to be a fantastic defender also. He’s top of the pops in the entire minor leagues as far as I’m concerned.
Random notes
Matt Adams 2 for 4 with a double and a walk
Charlie Blackmon 2 for 2 (so far?)
Alex Presley 3 for 5 with two homers (for Woo!)
Kyle Seager 2 for 2 with two doubles, two runs and, yes, two walks
I know Edwar Cabrera is old for his league and has a profile of stealth over power, but he’s sporting a 96:14 K:BB in 71 IP after today’s 7IP 3H 1R 1ER 0BB 11K start (1 HRA for the sole run) and hey, he’s a lefty. Time to move on.
Joe Wieland stumbles a bit with a 6IP 11H 5R 5ER 0BB 6K day. He’s entitled.
haha

Greg Halman called up to the Mariners.
Halman was hitting .276 / .323 / .517 in only 32 PA due to his wrist injury keeping him out almost all of April and May. Came back May 29 and hit a dinger, so his power seems to be fine. Has been 6 for 22 since returning with 4 walks to 9 strikeouts, a dinger, a triple, and a stolen base.
Since he’s out of options, this is his sink or swim year.

Umm
I have no clue what the M’s are doing, bringing up every OF spec w/ limited playing time and see what happens? They have Saunders who should be playing more or in AAA, Peguero, and now Halman? I really don’t get it.
Saunders is the one going down to AAA
This is a good move as Saunders can work on his new swing and find his confidence. Halman serves as CF backup (same role Saunders played when Guti returned).
I can't believe Mike Wilson, Peguero, and Halman are all with the M's this year.
And we’re 2 games over .500. Does not compute.
