MILB 6/17: David Perez debut
One of the biggest stories tonight is the state side debut of Rangers phenom David Perez. He will be taking the hill for short-season Spokane of the NWL.
Other Rangers minor league probables, via Scott Lucas -
AAA: Neil Ramirez
AA: Martin Perez
Hi-A: Joe Wieland
Lo-A: Cody Buckel
Short-A: David Perez
Others going tonight - Spruill, Owens, Skaggs, Odorizzi, Balcom-Miller, Banuelos, Gould, H.Simpson, Ray, VonRosenberg, Jay Jackson, Beavan, Oberholtzer, Roemer... and probably others that pop up later.

Other short-season
John Barbato (Eugene) and Ben Wells (Boise), a couple of high-bonus high school kids from last year celebrate their escapes from the desert. In the NY-Penn, Juri Perez gets a restart after surgery last year. Parker Bridwell’s another guy from the class of 2010.
take it for what it's worth
but someone who says she’s Parker Bridwell’s aunt tweeted yesterday that Parker threw 100 MPH last week. This has been rumored a couple other places too, but seems like it’s become some kind of urban legend.
Happy Garin Cechinni day!
Brandon Jacobs of Lowell > Brandon Jacobs of NYG
The Randall Delgado start
is on MLBN. Pretty sweet.
broken bat double
to Cruz nets a run for the Rangers, but Delgado does seem calm, came back nicely.
Yeah
jammed up that inning but made the nice throw to 3B to get the force on Lewis’s bunt. He’s missing just off the plate a lot, but the FB and curve look great. He’s not a huge guy but he looks well-conditioned and strong. The arm works really well.

I think they need to shut him down
Its messing up his head. I remember when Dan Bard made his debut in the Cal-League and completely got rocked then was demoted to Low-A and it just kept going. It messed him up and had to see a psychologist.
They should shut him down so he can clear his head and start over.

Can anyone tell me about him? I know he’s up and filling in for Coyle, but is his long term position SS or 2B? How does he profile? What do scouts think his power potential is? Is he okay defensively?
http://forum-soxprospects.com/topic/6359#.Tfv9a0d_Dg8
Some good info there from the winter.
Anything more?
I’d love to hear more, specifically any comparisons people might have, what his power / defense are like and what position he might end up at.
He's up for good now.
He is a SS but because of his physical frame he’ll probably outgrow the position but he’ll stay at SS for the foreseeable future.
He has an advance feel for hitting and while you won’t see the HR numbers just yet he can drive the ball and projects to hit for above avg power.
If you want more checkout his scouting report at SoxProspects they have the most information on him that you’ll find in the internet.

11.2 K/9, 3.2 BB/9, 2.43 G/F ratio…and hitting high 90s with his fastball.
I think at this point he’s in the running for top-100 consideration.

we have to keep this in perspective. We are talking about a dude that skipped two levels. That said, his “terrible” starts haven’t been too bad either, more just meh. To me, what he is doing is astounding. Does he have a way to go? Sure. But still, it’s been pretty amazing to see him have success in AAA.
Ryan Lavarnway
3-3 with 2 HRs and 1 BB. That’s 16 HR on the year, and he’s hitting .500 in AAA since getting promoted this past week. If he keeps this up, he’ll be in Boston soon…
Yeah
I often check his line a few times during his outings and just like tonight it’s looking great, check back later and he fell apart. Oh well, dominance in short spurts right?

Here's a snippet from Jason Parks over at TexasFarmReview
"The only thing I love more than protectable pitchers are projectable pitchers who already have an advanced feel for fastball command. The 18 year-old Dominican stands a lanky 6’5’’, with arms longer than Carlos Martinez’s body and the frame to add strength as he matures. His fastball works in the low 90s, but can touch the mid-to-upper 90s in bursts. His curveball plays very well off the fastball, as his delivery is silky smooth and he has a consistent release point with all of his pitches. The pitch itself (curveball) shows a good, tight spin, and should develop into a plus pitch with more bite as he adds velocity to it. Academically speaking, the changeup has potential based on the repeatable mechanics/release points (how many lanky 18 year-olds have repeatable mechanics?), allowing for deception, the hallmark of a good changeup.
Perez’s overall feel for the mound, present stuff, and crazy projectability give him the characteristics of a future frontline starter. Development can throw some hurdles in his path, but the total package could create a Leader of the Pack (Future) opportunity in the coming years. By the end of the 2011 season, Perez will start to receive more attention, and by the time he leaves his teenage years behind, he could be a top-tier prospect in baseball. I’m a believer. "

Profar
just continues to make a believer out of me. Anyone see any similarities between him and a young HanRam? I’m not saying Profar is remotely the offensive force that HanRam is (was?), but if you look at HanRam’s minor league stats and he never hit more than 10 HR in a year.

"HanRam’s minor league stats"
That’s always been the confounding thing about him, leading to all those theories that he needed to be “challenged” before delivering on his ability. He was always considered a 5 Tool prospect , though, and even Profar’s biggest fans among evaluators point to his lack of them, right? Their builds are also nothing alike. I don’t think Profar will ever achieve Hanley’s mass.

I think Profar’s polish and lower level performance makes many think his ceiling projects higher than it really is. Both have solid ceilings but some of the comps that have been thrown out might be overdoing it. I do think, though, that both (along with guys like Ramirez and Wieland) are good bets to end up closer to their ceilings than their floors because of their work ethics.

Great stats, great projection. The only negative I can see is that lefties are hitting almost .300 off of him. I’m assuming that’s due to little or no change at this point.
