Other short-season

John Barbato (Eugene) and Ben Wells (Boise), a couple of high-bonus high school kids from last year celebrate their escapes from the desert. In the NY-Penn, Juri Perez gets a restart after surgery last year. Parker Bridwell’s another guy from the class of 2010.

take it for what it's worth

but someone who says she’s Parker Bridwell’s aunt tweeted yesterday that Parker threw 100 MPH last week. This has been rumored a couple other places too, but seems like it’s become some kind of urban legend.

Yeah

jammed up that inning but made the nice throw to 3B to get the force on Lewis’s bunt. He’s missing just off the plate a lot, but the FB and curve look great. He’s not a huge guy but he looks well-conditioned and strong. The arm works really well.

Its messing up his head. I remember when Dan Bard made his debut in the Cal-League and completely got rocked then was demoted to Low-A and it just kept going. It messed him up and had to see a psychologist.

They should shut him down so he can clear his head and start over.

He's up for good now.

He is a SS but because of his physical frame he’ll probably outgrow the position but he’ll stay at SS for the foreseeable future.

He has an advance feel for hitting and while you won’t see the HR numbers just yet he can drive the ball and projects to hit for above avg power.

If you want more checkout his scouting report at SoxProspects they have the most information on him that you’ll find in the internet.

Here's a snippet from Jason Parks over at TexasFarmReview
"The only thing I love more than protectable pitchers are projectable pitchers who already have an advanced feel for fastball command. The 18 year-old Dominican stands a lanky 6’5’’, with arms longer than Carlos Martinez’s body and the frame to add strength as he matures. His fastball works in the low 90s, but can touch the mid-to-upper 90s in bursts. His curveball plays very well off the fastball, as his delivery is silky smooth and he has a consistent release point with all of his pitches. The pitch itself (curveball) shows a good, tight spin, and should develop into a plus pitch with more bite as he adds velocity to it. Academically speaking, the changeup has potential based on the repeatable mechanics/release points (how many lanky 18 year-olds have repeatable mechanics?), allowing for deception, the hallmark of a good changeup.

Perez’s overall feel for the mound, present stuff, and crazy projectability give him the characteristics of a future frontline starter. Development can throw some hurdles in his path, but the total package could create a Leader of the Pack (Future) opportunity in the coming years. By the end of the 2011 season, Perez will start to receive more attention, and by the time he leaves his teenage years behind, he could be a top-tier prospect in baseball. I’m a believer. "

Profar

just continues to make a believer out of me. Anyone see any similarities between him and a young HanRam? I’m not saying Profar is remotely the offensive force that HanRam is (was?), but if you look at HanRam’s minor league stats and he never hit more than 10 HR in a year.

"HanRam’s minor league stats"

That’s always been the confounding thing about him, leading to all those theories that he needed to be “challenged” before delivering on his ability. He was always considered a 5 Tool prospect , though, and even Profar’s biggest fans among evaluators point to his lack of them, right? Their builds are also nothing alike. I don’t think Profar will ever achieve Hanley’s mass.

by blackoutyears on Jun 18, 2011 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Like Erlin

I think Profar’s polish and lower level performance makes many think his ceiling projects higher than it really is. Both have solid ceilings but some of the comps that have been thrown out might be overdoing it. I do think, though, that both (along with guys like Ramirez and Wieland) are good bets to end up closer to their ceilings than their floors because of their work ethics.

Chuckie Jones in the S-K vs Spokane game

3-3, 2B, 2 BB, HBP; both walks were against David Perez

Adopted Giant: Jacob Dunnington. Will your team regret passing up on my boy 50 times?

Hector Sanchez

the recently promoted catcher seems to be holding his own so far with AAA pitching. The Giants catcher of the future.

I was on him a little

last year, and was surprised by the odd drop in walk rate in the Cali League this season. He was doing everything else right, so I chalked it up to a guy who was locked in being aggressive. How’s the defense? And how’s his conditioning this year? I saw the Scouting The Sally video over the winter and he looked like an honorary Molina.

Jemile Weeks

2/4, 2B, RBI, K, CS, .361

6 extra base hits thru 10 games with Oakland.

Bobby Borchering

2 for 3 with 2 HR and a BB.
Low OBP (.317) and high K-ratio (87 K vs. 264 AB) are a concern – but now 3 HR in last two games and up to 12 HR on the year at age 20 in the CAL with .477 SLG and seemingly making strides after a bad April.

Some Cub prospects

Ben Wells 5 IP 5 H 2 ER 2 BB 4 K in his pro debut at Boise
The earlier mentioned struggling Hayden Simpson 4.2 IP 4 H 3 R (2 ER) 3 BB 2 K
Josh Vitters 2-4 with his 7th HR now up to .288 in AA Tennessee
Brett Jackson 2-3 BB and was robbed of a HR

Bryan Petersen

2-5, 2 HR. Having a very nice season at .342/.433/.578, 13.3 BB%, 13.8 K%. Given the current CF situation in Florida, it would be nice to see him get a shot at some playing time.

Mason Williams

The Yankees 4th-rounder from last year (who received a $1.45 million bonus) was 2 for 4 with a double and a home run for Staten Island in his professional debut. Definitely a guy to follow closely.

Taijuan 'the worm-burner' Walker

Saw a couple posts above that got all fragmented.

7ip 2ha 1er 2bb 11k, 2.00 go/ao last night.

Now at 45ip on year with 1 hr allowed, 16bb, 56 k, a .220 baa and 2.43 go/ao…

Kinda running out of superlatives for this kid, all the scouting reports indicate the stuff is there. Very green, still plenty of projection left too. I know its against the grain, but I have him ahead of hultzen right now as SEA top prospect.

by St.Steve on Jun 18, 2011 11:43 AM EDT reply actions

I wouldn't take him over Hultzen

But he’s clearly a top 50 guy and one of the biggest risers of the year.

I love Walker

Great stats, great projection. The only negative I can see is that lefties are hitting almost .300 off of him. I’m assuming that’s due to little or no change at this point.

I’d also still take Hultzen over him, but the gap isn’t too terribly much at all.

i hear you

Definitely about projectability right now and ceiling vs. floor on hultzen and walker. I’m just an upside whore.

Charlie Blackmon

Not in the minors, but 4 for 4. So far the torrid Triple-A performance has carried over.

by blackoutyears on Jun 18, 2011 12:53 PM EDT reply actions

tor·rid 1. Very hot and dry. 2. Full of passionate or highly charged emotions arising from sexual love.

Interesting. Do you know him personally?

Are you the definition police?

It also means:

1. Passionate; ardent: a torrid love scene.
2. Hurried; rapid: set a torrid pace; torrid economic growth.

A ‘torrid’ pace seems to make sense.

No, but then do you normally “know” porn stars? lol

Torrid pace is fairly hoary cliche at this date, hackneyed even. Pretty funny to call attention to it. Read much? lol

"Read much?"

Just the dictionary.

It was just a weak joke. You’re very hot and dry today for some reason. Are you still sore about losing the Bauer vs. Cole, college statistical usefulness debate?
