June 11 minor league games

Interesting last couple weeks, in that we get to see some callups performing in the majors. Some of these were expected, but at least two (Greg Halman and Dee Gordon) really suprised me. Both have hit OK so far, Halman having only 3 whiffs (in 16 PAs), and Gordon looking like Rafael Furcal lite.

Can Halman and Gordon turn a corner at the major league level?

Other guys I am waiting to see called up: Kipnis, Mesoraco, Lawrie, Jake McGee, Jesus Montero, Travis Snider

A few notable pitchers going today:

i whiffed on Mesoraco (until now)-

There is almost nothing to nitpick about in his numbers. I doubt he will see anything other than a cup o’ Joe this year, barring injury…but do the reds and crusty give him the gig next year as they seemingly should?? I was big on rosario to start, but this kid has passed him imo and outside of ‘sweet Jesus’ there isn’t a minor league catcher I put ahead of him.

by St.Steve on Jun 11, 2011 1:50 PM EDT reply actions

What range do people have Mesoraco in now?

I had him around #30 on my preseason list(#31 on my rough draft, not sure on the final list, I can’t find it). So far 11 players ahead of him on my list will definitely lose prospect status with another 6-8 names as strong possibilities to lose eligibility. Another 3-4 names have dropped behind Mesoraco at this point, but then there are a couple of names ranked behind that move ahead as well as newly drafted players like Cole, Rendon, etc. I’m guessing he ends up in the 10-20 range for me, though without sitting down and writing out the names I can’t really nail it down more than that. Where does he rank for everyone else?

I had him 10th among undrafted players in my league

but it’s a deep league that typically only has players available from last year’s draft (Harper, Machado, etc.) and late risers leftover from prior years (such as Machado, whose 2010 numbers seemingly came out of nowhere). Among catchers, he was the top one available, a few spots ahead of Rosario, both of whom were then well ahead of Grandal.

Basically, I tentatively bought into the numbers from 2010 being legit, enough to grab him at Pick 21. The next established minor leaguers that went shortly after were McNutt, Franklin, White, and Odorizzi. Ones that went just before him were Segura, Espinosa, and Singleton.

I had him

Top 25, but that was based on some faith that he was the best of a trio including Rosario and Norris. Mesoraco and Rizzo were two guys I was very high on coming into the year.

Matzek

I’m curious if anyone knows what mechanics he’s using, his HS mechanics that saw him jump up the draft board or the altered mechanics the Rockies changed him to? I think it’s worth a shot at letting him go back to throwing how he is comfortable and seeing what the results are, as things haven’t been working so far as is.

Casejud

Isn’t bad, but give it a rest already. Took me a mere 2 minutes to go back and find where he was making an arguement that Jed Lowrie was better than Joey Votto and no one will ever forget him sucking the foreskin off of Tim Alderson. Who? Exactly. Like I said, I think Case is alright, but he cetainly doesn’t have the track record to stand out as some sort of elite prospector.

I will say that Lowrie has turned out to be pretty damned ghood ballplayer and there was considerable doubt that one here at the time.

I COULD just write Alderson off as an unforseen miss, a LOT of peiople liked him at the time but, he has tought me to be way more discerning about really young arms in the minor leagues.

Well...

Even though I’m loathe to give credit to some random guy (and I have no f’ing idea who you are) no one could predict that Alderson’s mechanics would be messed with as badly as his were. He looks like a shell of his former self, and frankly some of that is directly attributable to the fact that his mechanics have been messed with to an extreme degree. They weren’t great to start, but it seems clear that too much change was attempted.

I just looked at video of Matzek from March this year

Compared with 2008 in the Under Armour game.

He is the same guy mechanically, struggles to repeat his delivery and lacks concentration. He still has very good stuff though so I would say he MIGHT have a chance of turning it around.

But in terms of mechanics, in March it was the same as when he was in high School

I would take 4 for sure, maybe all 5 of them, over Wheeler

and I’m a Giants fan who loves Wheeler. Gibson/Minor/White are all closer to the majors with comparable ceilings. Miller is much better overall, and Turner is the only one who is comparable to Wheeler

but the ceilings are close enough to be comparable, and Gibson/Minor’s proximity to the majors, and higher floors (Gibson for getting mad amounts of GBs, and Minor for being a lefty) give them a definite edge of wheeler.

…who doesn’t think Dee Gordon has some huge corner he needs to turn? He might need a little adjustment time in the majors, but I see him winding up as being pretty similar in offensive performance and overall value to Michael Bourn. He won’t be the kind of player people pay a lot of attention to, but he should quietly produce plenty of value for the Dodgers.

by OremLK on Jun 11, 2011 4:02 PM EDT reply actions

Well

I think the question is, could he develop another half notch if he were to stay in the minors this year, in a way that he won’t if he gets called up?

Then again, sometimes people seem to gain that half notch in the majors. Better coaching? More able to play to the level of their peers? This is an element that I assume well-run clubs pay attention to and factor into their calculus, and one we’ll never really be privy to..

by siddfynch on Jun 11, 2011 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope, not the only one

I think he’s capable of posting an empty average. If he’s playing the kind of defense that his tools suggest he can, he’ll be a valuable major leaguer.

Question

Dee Gordon was your #47 guy, not picking on you for this. You like the guy, thats cool. What I am wondering is where exactly did you rank Ben Revere? He was off the BB top 100 I believe.

Isn’t he a very similar player to Dee Gordon? Potential for a good, empty average – lots of speed – doesn’t walk a lot – figures to conmtribute defense at an important position. Eevn you have to admit tjhis is a pretty compelling argument right?

By the way, even though I’m making thuis argument I still think that Revere is a quite a bit better hitter than Gordon is.

"if it first you don't suceed, maybe you just suck" - Kenny Powers

by casejud on Jun 12, 2011 4:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Ah

Revere 118 in 1654 Pa’s = 7.13%
Gordon 113 in 1709 Pa’s= 6.61%

i guess you are right, Revere has walked more. Revere and Gordon are similar offensive players. With thier similarities in athleticism, defensive ability, and power there really is no logical reason Gordon should get attention as a top 50 prospect and Revere should struggle to rank in the top 100. No reasons that I can see anyways.

Yeah, I don’t get why they wouldn’t call him up if they are in the race. He and Chis make them a better team

Kipnis responds by going 3-4 with a HR and BB.

My guess

And it’s just a complete guess…

I think they are trying to figure out what they have in Cord Phelps. Phelps will get the lion’s share of starts at 2B over the next couple months. And as long as Hannahan produces at 3B, there is no rush to push Phelps over to 3B and bring Kipnis up.

All that being said, I do think by the end of August we will see Kipnis as the starting 2B in Cleveland.

Not my top 50, possibly top 100. If I was strictly basing off stats, then yes.

17 yo Rays VSL catcher Oscar Hernandez went yard yet again today for his 11th home run in just 76 at bats.

He is interesting if nothing else.

Jordan Lyles vs. Mike Minor

In the majors tonight. Minor getting hit hard in the 1st so far. Lyles gave up 2 hits, but rolled a 2 ball in the top of the frame.

by Jay212033 on Jun 11, 2011 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

whatever

At the time I typed my initial comment, it was the bottom of the 1st, and Minor was getting hit hard. For the record, I have both guys on my team, so I was rooting for both of ’em.

The “sensitivity meter” must be set to high on this board tonight…

I believe in him more than many other OF prospects

that said, his lefty split concerns me. (.226/.316/.405 in 84 at bats)

I hope he learns how to hit lefties. Otherwise we are looking at Seth Smith Jr.

I believe in Wheeler

but do wonder how his skills will translate. The splits and the strikeouts are areas to monitor. He’s having a great year though.

Ramirez keeps putting up "meh" lines

but half of it is just that he’s pitching so few innings each time. He’s not even averaging 5 innings a start, but he’s struck out 62 in 56.2 innings, and has walked only 25 with 3 HR.

The next step for Ramirez to make is pitch efficiency. I’m just speculating, since I don’t know how many pitches Texas is letting him throw each time out, but at a glance you’d expect that a lack of efficiency is leading to short outings. The fact that he made a huuuuuge jump from the Carolina league to the PCL and is pitching very well on a rate basis is cause for a lot of excitement. It’s not unexpected that he’d struggle somewhere given that jump. If he can learn how make his pitches count a bit more, he’s going to be very good, very fast.

by PissedMick on Jun 12, 2011 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

You might be right on the efficiency comment

The K rate is really good, but 25 BB in 56.2 innings is not a good BB rate at all. He’s likely throwing way too many pitches and just needs to learn to trust his stuff a little more against the advanced hitters in AAA.

by guru4u on Jun 13, 2011 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

This is all true. His overall numbers are still good

But he’s really cooled off since his hot April start.

by Jack203 on Jun 13, 2011 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions

He skipped AA,

and there should be some expectation of league adjustment. That said, he isn’t going deep into games, and really wasn’t even when he was “hot”. I’m interested to see how he adjusts.

Da Boys of Summer

Shoot, are we going to have to resurrect the prospect status of mat Gamel around here? he hit his 11th homer – his second in as many nights – tonight. He’s hitting .303/.374/.522

Pablo Sandoval homered for Fresno. I heard he may dust off his catching gear when he gets back to San Fran.

Barry Enright for Reno 6 – 2 – 1 – 1 – 1 – 4. An underrated guy. I hope he gets back to the show soon. A 3.29 ERA in Reno will help get you there.

Dayan Viciedo went 2 -4 with a double, single. He’s hitting .312/ .358/ .519 at Charlotte and is a Jaun Pierre, Adam Dunn,. Paul Konerko, or Carlos Quentin pulled hammy away from the big leagues. Not that I’m rooting for any of those. Ok, maybe part of me with Jaun Pierre. Dayan is a community WHIFF, by the way. You can argue that it was justified but, he certainly was ignored as a prospect before the year.

Magglio Ordonez homered for the second straight for Toledo. He’s ready Detroit. He’ll be back Monday.

Jason Kipnis homered for Columbus.

Mike Trout tripled, singled twice, walked, and swiped two bags. My kind of ballplayer.

Hak Ju Lee. He is heating up again. 2-5 with a double tonight and 2 huits or more in 6 of the past 7 games. .356/ .435/ .500 at age 20 in the Florida State League.

You can say whatever you want about me personally but, you have to give me Hak Ju Lee. I ranked him 14th on my pre-season list when nobody else put him in thier top 60 except maybe Frankie Pillierre. The kid is something! The Korean Jose Reyes is what.

Nick Franklin has been disappointing to some this season maybe but, not tonight. 2-4 with a walk, a homer, and three runs scored. I may have made an error ranking him as the 7th best prospect in baseball, or I may not. I’ll have to think about that one. He is one that I’d sure love to see play for a game or two to see whats up.

Anyone have any insight on his position? There were some doubts on his ability to stick at SS defensively last year, and now I see he has logged in a fair amount of time at 2B.

by guru4u on Jun 12, 2011 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Just like last year, he's been rotating with other short stop prospects (Noriega, etc)

Don’t concern yourself with it. Scouts see mixed on where he inevitably ends up but nobody has pointed out one actual tangible thing that would prevent him from being a short stop long term. Just a lot of guesswork on how his body fills out as he matures.

The only disappointing thing about Franklin this year vs. last year is the power has vanished. This is doubly odd when you consider he’s playing in the Cal League this year, which is known for it’s offensive launching pads (Adalento and Lancaster).

Fans are typically idiots.

by The Typical Idiot Fan on Jun 12, 2011 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes

They started him off in the 2-hole in the lineup and he was taking a lot of pitches – and drawing a lot of walks – and recently he has hit leadoff some.

So, it is actually much like my friend Slamcactus said, that they would groom him as top of the order hitter and as a Shortstop aand that with his size, that would take away from his power.

I always said that it was his all-around game that made him a top prospect to me but, the bat has been a disappointment this year.

Brett Oberholtzer

Third drubbing in his last four starts and even the other start featured three walks and no strikeouts. 10 BB to 6 K in those starts, after posting a 10K 0BB game on May 20. What the heck has happened to him? He looked like he was heading for a breakout year before this stretch.

Interesting Twins LHP had his best start of the year: 6.2IP 0H 0R 2BB 9K. His delivery is slightly closed off in front, but he repeats it well and the arm speed and slot are the same on his FB, curve and change. Interesting guy.
