Matt Purke isn't on here right now because I don't know what to make of his health status. You can put him around 40 if you like. He'll be on the final list but I don't know where yet.

Excellent this is fun to look at

I have Cody Asche juuuust inside the top 90 or so too like right where you have him.

Could I be mistaken or have you missed OF George Springer? -maybe you dislike him that much?

I think this board rules the only thing i can see that some may have different is SS/OF Larry Green up inside the top 50 or 40. I also have RHP Anthony Meo from Coastal Carolina up higher. But this is an awesome power board.

Glen Perkins is throwing 97 MPH in 2011 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what the hell is he on?

springer

No springer is supposed to be on there….will fix. Looks like cut/paste error

I found Bauer incredibly intriguing.

Also intriguing is having Lindor down so low. Not sold on his bat?

I don't think Lindor is low at all thats about where i'd have him

Well, that and...

We’re talking about someone who is getting rave (like elite) reviews on his defense at short. If you can get a cornerstone defensive short stop who can also hit, that’s far more valuable than a lot of these other choices.

Since I doubt the defense will slump at the pro level, the confidence in the stick has to be the issue keeping him from being higher. I’ve seen other people mock draft him being picked in the teens area, but I thought there were reasons for that other than talent.

Fans are typically idiots.

Great stuff!

I especially like the all of the little-known sleepers you’ve added:
Jeff Soptic
Lenny Linsky
Jace Peterson

Another thing that stands out to me is

All the Florida High school prep starts that are on this board, and many others…
Theres a lot of them and they’re a talented bunch

from Lindor, to Goetzman, to Bichetter JR to Marlette, to RHP MIchael Kelly – this is a good year from Florida.

Baez

I have him in the 15-20 range and you don’t have him top 101, interesting.

by bigboy1234 on Jun 1, 2011 4:56 PM EDT reply actions

Has to be a mistake. Sorry John, but no way is Baez not a Top 100 prospect…thats just ridiculous.

ugh

Yeah, baez is supposed to be 21. Not sure what happened there, him and Springer got cut off when i transferred this from spreadsheet to word.

Bell

Very aggressive ranking on Bell. Two questions about him: 1) Do you think he signs, even if a team gives him big money? 2) What’s his ceiling?

by 4dizzle on Jun 1, 2011 5:29 PM EDT reply actions

i like where Bell is at if he'd be an easier sign

I could of sen him to K.C. at #5 potentially.

On my own list

Top five that aren’t here (other than Purke):
Charles Tilson
Zach Cone
Phil Evans
Kevin Comer
Joshua Tobias

Josh Bell

A couple questions:

1 – Could the Cubs pick him at 9 if Starling is off the board?

2 – Would they have a real shot at luring him away from Texas?

3 – How would you parallel his rise to Jason Heyward’s in ’07?

Also, I have a question on Matt Barnes…how similar to Justin Verlander is he? I see some similarities in stuff, size, and mechanics, but was Verlander a notch or so higher than Barnes is coming out of college?

by SenorGato on Jun 1, 2011 8:44 PM EDT reply actions

Oh and how large do you see the gap between...

Bell and Starling as? I have Bell as a better pure baseball player, while Starling is the better athlete with stronger defensive tools while still owning ridiculous bat potential. Close?

by SenorGato on Jun 1, 2011 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

I agree on your take here, Bell has more polish, Starling a better athlete with better defense but also higher risk that he won’t hit as expected. They are pretty damn close

by John Sickels on Jun 2, 2011 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

To put some numbers on their ceilings, does this seem reasonable? 30-30 potential for Starling, 30-40 HR potential for Bell? Maybe .280 avg for each, with Bell more likely to reach that avg?

by rlwhite on Jun 2, 2011 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

perhaps

I can see that…maybe more 25-30 for Starling. Bell 35 homers, high walks.

by John Sickels on Jun 2, 2011 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

This was my suspicion...

and it’s why I’m putting Bell over Starling. I have a way more faith in a player with Sale’s offensive profile.

by SenorGato on Jun 2, 2011 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Isn't Starling

essentially Donavan Tate without the same level of competition faced in HS?

by realitypolice on Jun 3, 2011 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

There were more questions about Tate's hit tool

And we really don’t know how good Tate is. He’s been battling injuries since he signed a pro contract.

by Jeff Reese on Jun 3, 2011 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

my top 5 not on John's board

Interestingly, they’re all prepsters. In alphabetical order:

Nicky Delmonico, C/1B, Farragut HS (TN)
Philip Evans, LaCosta Canyon HS (CA)
Billy Flamion, OF, Central Catholic HS (CA)
Charlie Tilson, CF, New Trier HS (IL)
Josh Tobias, 2B, Southeast Guilford HS (NC)

Very curious as to why Flamion didn’t make John’s list in particular, given our previous discussion.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 1, 2011 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

list

Delmonico is on my list.

Evans, Flamion, Tilson, and Tobias were all considered. Flamion and Tilson seem like their stock is down a bit. Evans and Tobias aren’t far off, 100-110 range.

by John Sickels on Jun 1, 2011 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions

makes sense

no idea how I missed Delmonico on your list (#88).

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 1, 2011 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

What about Tyler Wilson?

I know he’s a senior and his stuff isn’t spectacular, but he seems very solid, a high floor sort of guy who could impress, any thoughts?

by Cesar V on Jun 1, 2011 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

I like Wilson a lot, but I can’t see him going off the board before the 3rd round. There’s just so many other high-upside pitchers available.

Derek Fisher

Glad to see he squeaked into your top 40. He seems to be leaning toward college (has scholorship to Virginia) but I also believe that some team might still risk an early selection on him anyway. As much as I would love to see my Pirates land him with their first pick of the second round, I’m thinking Tampa Bay, with all those comp selections in the first round will take him.

by rblythepittsteel on Jun 2, 2011 9:59 AM EDT reply actions

fisher

He could go in the late first round if he is signable. But he could drop pretty far if he isn’t.

by John Sickels on Jun 2, 2011 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

I wouldnt take him right now

Based on the Scouting report that mentions he swings at a lot of balls and watches a lot of strikes go by. Something that you could hope he fixes in college, but not worth it for me, if drafting in the first 10 rounds.

by backtocali on Jun 2, 2011 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Except

this is a change from last year, so he may be pressing. Wouldn’t be the first player to get draftitis, or make adjustments over the winter that don’t work. You scout a player like Fisher on his tools, and I don’t think those are in doubt. And he’s certainly not a guy you say needs to go to college. That’s for kids needing projection, which is definitively not him. If he goes early I think it will be because he’s worked out a deal with the team that drafts him. If he doesn’t, then it’s probably a sign that he’s indicated to all that he’s serious about UVA, and John’s right, that you’ll see a later round flier.

Basis for Top 50

Is your list based on potential ceiling or some blend of other factors? Just trying to figure out if the Rockies should take Nimmo, Cron or Wong at #20.

If you would, please --

I was wondering if you could elaborate on a couple of Oklahoma HSers not named Bundy and Bradley — Fulmer (62) and Bradley’s teammate, Mason Hope. Thanks!

by Ryno1984 on Jun 3, 2011 1:34 PM EDT reply actions

Big fan of Hope

Guy has a potential four pitches. Sits low 90’s, athletic build, shows some sharp break on his slider, good arm action on his change, and shows good spin on his curve. Could stand a little work on the delivery but is a good piece of clay to work with.

I think he is pretty well known in scouting community maybe not as much by others because of his teammate Bradley.

Quick question

Isn’t the shortstop from Nevada named Jake Hager, not Jason?

Jose Flores: .831 OPS in High-A last year, 23 years old. This is his year. Update: .492 OPS in Double-A. Yeah, that's OPS. Perhaps this isn't his year.
