Milb Gameday, May 9th
Some good matchups today. I wouldn't mind being in Omaha, Nebraska today to see Lyles vs Montgomery (and vs Moustakas) but, I live in the Northwest. I'll have to settle for Las Vegas at Tacoma (and Brett Lawrie vs Dustin Ackley).
Here's some pitchers slated to throw today . . .
AAA - Jordan Lyles vs Mike Montgomery, Andrew Oliver, Blake Beavan, Felix Doubront, Zach Mcallister
AA - Dellin Bettances, Randal Delgado, Casey Kelly, John Lamb, Pat Corbin, Garrett Richards
A+ and A - Shelby Miller, Jared Cosart vs Henderson Alvarez, Kyle Heckathorn, Brett Wallace, Adrian Salcedo, Mike Rayl, Trevor Rosenthal, Carlos Perez
Enjoy posting!

Casey Kelly
6 IP 2H 1ER 2BB 3K
10-3 GO-FO
He’s been sharp lately—getting a ton of ground balls. he need to bring the Ks up, though.
also in that game, Darnell is 1-2 with a HR and a BB
Final
Darnell finished 2-for-3 with the BB and is nudging back up to a 500 OBP.
Kyle Blanks has apparently had enough of the talk about whether Rizzo should get a promotion. 2-for-3 with 2 doubles and a SF today. His recent tear has his OPS sitting up at 900 now and HAS to push the front office toward abandoning Hawpe/Cantu in the next few weeks.

Paul Goldschmidt
1-4 with a HR (12) and 3 RBI’s (32)
28/19 BB/K during the season.
I survived the 2004 & 2010 seasons.
If only he were left handed
That’d be some sarcasm by the way. Every bullpen/dugout in the SOU probably has an active pool guessing when this guy will be promoted. Awesome campaign thus far.
The winner in the pool
will be the coach who’s been in one of those Southern League dugouts/bullpens long enough to remember Jon Knott, Tagg Bozied, Wes Bankston, Micah Hoffpauir, Javier Brito, Josh Kroeger, Danny Dorn, Jake Fox, Matt LaPorta, Brandon Allen, Kila and Kala, etc…
by realitypolice on May 10, 2011 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions
OK RP, Im going to take a look here . . .
I’m going to do age and slugging PCT for all those guys, when they passed through the SL . . .
Knott 24 and .514 – he’s knott comparable
Bozied 22 and .389?? – hardly comparable at all
Bankston 21 and .482 – I dont see it
Hoffpauir 24 and .497 – he didnt really start hitting like Goldchmidt ‘til he was 27-28 at Iowa
Brito 24 and .477 – I dont see it
Kroeger 24 and .609 – FINALLY, a player who at least hit somewhat as well as Goldschmidt. He is a whole year older and hit 12 homers in 66 games not, 12 in 29 games though
Dorn 23 and .539 – He bashrd the ball in the bSL for 26 games at age 22 but, wasnt nearly as good as him at age 23.
Fox 23-25 and .521 – In parts of three seasons in the SL Fox never hi the ball anywhere near as well as Goldschmidt.
LaPorta 23 and .576 – Some burried treasure here. LaPorta was at least the same age, and had power and drew walks at a sililar percentage – though not as well in either. Notice, he’s in the big leagues eh?
Allen 23 and .515. Again, no. Alllen actually regressed when he returned to the SL as a 23 year old. Nowhere near as good of a hitter Im afraid.
Kala 22-24 and .356. Now dude, Kala wasn’t even an ok hitter in AA, so that is a terrible comparison
Kila 22-24 and .450. Now Kila is the only player you listed who didn’t play in the SL, he played in the Texas league. He had a great season at age 24, after struggling at the ages of 22-23. Obviously Goldschmidt is having no struggle at all.
So, no offense intended at all but, you listed 11 guys and ONE is somewhat comparable, and he is a starting player in the big leagues. This wasn’t exactly what you were trying to say was it? Goldschmidt is clearly better than all these guys, even LaPorta, thus far.

Actually...
what you’ve noted is that most guys who have absurdly hot streaks in the SL (and yes, Kila in the TL, and there are examples in every other league) finish the year with numbers that aren’t nearly so absurd and, five or six years later they look like just a group of guys who passed through Double-A.
Goldschmidt is more likely to finish the year with numbers that fit with the above group than he is with a 700 slugging percentage… and that’s what the winner in that theoretical pool will realize.
by realitypolice on May 10, 2011 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Okay
. . . fair enough, I cant disprove that. Though he has more homers ALREADY then many of the guys you mentioned. Personally I think he’ll leave the SL with closer to a .700 Slugging than a .500 one but, thats just my opinion.
I see what you were trying to say. I still enjoy your writing but, I think he’s a better hitter than ALL of those guys.
"if it first you don't suceed, maybe you just suck" - Kenny Powers
I thought
most of those guys were better hitters than they were!
Trust me, most of those names came to mind because at one point or another, I thought they were going to do something. (And for what it’s worth, I’m convinced that in some alternate universe, Tagg Bozied wasn’t so damn happy about that grand slam in Portland in 2004, got the call that was ever so close to coming, and established himself as a solid big league regular by 2005!)

well this guy was in Omaha today
Montgomery’s line was 5 ip, 6 h, 3 r, 2 bb, 6 k. very easy to see why he’s so highly regarded. was mostly 93 with fastball, topped at 95 and was as low as 89-90 to get some strikes over behind in the count. outstanding changeup. at least 9 swing and misses with that pitch alone. curve had some bite but didn’t throw it for strikes too much. he still needs some time in the minors, but the upside here is really ridiculous i think.
Lyles line was 5.1 ip, 6 h, 5 r, 6 bb, 3 k. his command was awful today and beside the walks he fell behind quite a few hitters. mostly sat at 89-90 with fastball and was as high as 92 for a couple pitches and was at 87-88 a little too. changeup OK but it was obvious who had the better changeup on this day (not Lyles). curve was alright too but hitters were not chasing it too much and it wasn’t be thrown for strikes. i hope i saw him on a bad day with his pitches because i can’t see him as much more than a #4 type starter with the stuff he had today (command aside).
Moustakas looks like he is heating up with good numbers recently and another good day today 2-3, 2 doubles, a walk and sac fly (that really wasn’t a “fly” — laser straight to CF who made a nice catch)

not good for lyles
i think he’ll be better than a #4 starter though. he is really really young still.

how many pitchers peak at age 20?
i’m not saying he’ll be able to gain 5 MPH or even 2 MPH on his fastball, but he has plenty of time to improve, as almost all pitchers do.
by auclairkeithbc on May 9, 2011 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree
But there are varying degrees in which youth is meaningful. As an American born pitcher with lots of pitching experience, I’d be surprised if there is that much more, aside from a new pitch, that Lyles can learn. I think most would agree that he is mature physically.

well
his command has been a bit shaky this season, and obviously in this game. not being able to throw his curveball for strikes can be improved upon possibly. it isn’t like he has been getting roughed up. he gave up 3 doubles. that isn’t great, but it isn’t a sign that he has bad stuff. the 6 walks isn’t necessarily tied to his stuff either, especially long term.

might have just saw him on a bad day, i don't know

Trayvon Robinson
2-4, 2b, hr (#7) – .336avg & starting to make more consistent contact, though I find it odd he isn’t running more
he'll run once he gets some "davey lopes time"
might need an injury to get a chance this year though – that OF in LA is crowded
Well
to be honest I think having an almost full year in AAA will do him very well, he isn’t someone that needs to be rushed as I think it would do more harm than anything. Maybe after the Dodgers realize Loney is better on the bench while giving Sands a shot he will be up in LF.
Eric Thames: 3-for-5, home run, 2 doubles. This after going 3-for-3 with a walk and 2 home runs yesterday.
In comparison, Brett Lawrie’s 2-for-5 is kind of meh.
thames
he’s very underrated prospect, imo, with legit star potential — he’s going to be 24 all year, so he’s not too old for the league, and due to injury he’s missed a bunch of ab’s as well (just 714 so far). his only shortcoming is his poor arm, but he seems like he’ll hit more then enough to make up for it.
+1
I agree with almost everything you said.
He may not be a “star,” but I think he can be Brian Giles when Brian Giles was good.

OT, but.....when Brian Giles was good, he was a star
OPS from 1999-2002:
1032
1026
994
1072
I’m not sure where this leaves us with Eric Thames, but I think even people who remember that Brian Giles was good tend to forget HOW good.
Yes hovering around 1000 OPS for 4 consecutive years
would be something I think Thames and any Thames fantasy owner (me) would take in a heartbeat.
If he becomes an avg corner OF for a couple seasons, and an above average corner OF for a couple seasons, I’ll be happy. Hopefully throws in some steals too.
Yes, Brian Giles was a star
He may have been hidden in Pittsburgh, but he was a monster.

I agree with you on both accounts. the rythm of the game is better and I couldn;t care less about what anybody took.
The silliest part of it is how most people tend to accuse people of PEDs when they didnt like the player. Try to remember, for those who care about these things, that some players you really liked probebly did them as well.

Brian Giles is a poor comp
When I see Eric Thames, I see Milton Bradley minus the switch-handedness, above-average throwing arm, and mommy/daddy issues.
by another know it all on May 10, 2011 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions
Probably a better comp
Bradley had a couple stretches where he was playing at an above avg CI regular, so I’d take a non-psychotic Milton Bradley any day of the week.

Sebastien Valle
3-4, 2B, HR, K.
Hope this is significant as the start of something, entered the day:
22-83, 4 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 1 BB:20 K (.272/.289/.383 (.672 OPS (88 OPS+)) – .293 wOBA (94 wOBA+))
I liked Valle quite a bit entering this year, thinking he could may be a breakthrough guy. John’s internet comment basically sums up my thoughts:
7) Sebastian Valle, C, Grade C+: He has intriguing defense and power combination, but strike zone judgment needs a lot of work.
This guy scratched some top 100 lists
He’s playing good but not great. Is he turning any heads with his stuff this season?
Not saying he'll keep it up...
But, just another reason not to overreact after one month.

read an interview with him recently
Castellanos said it was taking him some time getting used to playing in cold weather. Not too surprising that he had a slow start while adjusting.
not bad for a 21 yr old in AA
too bad this guy is a done for has been prospect that will never sniff the majors.
Right
That and the pitchers are a LOT better. I guess small sample size only applies when its a player you like eh? Maybe?
This time last year he was in the MWL so, maybe we give him a little time to adjust? Yes, he does have no homers though yet. You are correct RP.

Are you directing that at me?
I don’t recall making any sort of assessment of Sands’s talent in my post. I merely pointed out the drastic change in hitting environment.
Bullpen Banter
Twitter Account: @Ioffridus
Sure
I agree with you, of course. Doger stadium is a much tougher place to hit than Albequerque is.
Id say the the other two factors involved there are the fact that the major leagues are harder and, that he has only played 17 games in the bigs.
Then again, the same could be said of the Dodgers calling him up after only 10 games right? I wonder If a hitter really learns anything about how to survive in the show while playing everyday in an environment like Albequerque? Perhaps its for the best to get him out of there. I try to be objective but, Im rooting for him – and I think he he makes it.
I wasn’t directing anything at you Jar.

Machado update for those who missed the first one
Orioles orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens confirmed that prospect shortstop Manny Machado suffered a left patellar subluxation.
It’s the same diagnosis that was given last week, which is essentially the same thing as a dislocated kneecap. The promising young shortstop is expected to be sidelined for 7-10 days.
Funny. My brother had this injury (I believe) and was out a lot longer than that. Though, he isn’t a professional athlete.
