He’s also managed to cut down on his strike out rate so far. Stats aren’t everything but from what the scouting director has said about Crouse in addition to his incredibly athletic build, i’m not inclined to buy Goldstein when he says Crouse is a fringe prospect.
Jared Mitchell
0-5, 5 K
he’s been bad. real bad.

Ouch
Take a raw player, make him sit out a year, you get an even rawer player. I liked him too. Shame.
Mike Trout
. . . obscure, Angels prospect hits two-run homer in 8-run-8th inning for Arkansas
he is 2-4
Ackley has gone deep for the 5th time this year.
Jaff Decker has slammed his 10th Homer of the year.
Moustakas had 2 knocks, a walk, no Ks today. Here’s a prediction for you guys – he’s about to get real, real hot right about now.

Final line today:
2-3, BB, HR. Season line should look something like .230/.365/.389 after this game. The only thing wrong with his season line right now is an absurdly low BABIP.
.286/.408/.444
That’s his line if you add 7 singles to his hits to make up for the low babip. Much better, right?
that's the normal rate of balls in play falling for hits.
Whatever you might think is “true talent BABIP” is, it’s higher than .230.
Ackley is doing just fine at the plate.
Dangit
You know what . . . I was at the game, last night, and I felt like I was watching somebody who was real comfortable at the plate and looking to work counts and show he can drive a ball.
It isn’t so much, to me anyways, that he has been un lucky – though maybe he has – its that he was trying to show he has pop. He does. I’ve seen him hit a few balls really well early but, I believe he’ll tone it down a bit soon and find a middle ground with a higher average and that amazing batting eye.
I listen to the Tacoma game every night, at least when Ackley bats, and the Tacoma announcer has a lot of praise for the impact he has on the game by taking pitches and making pitchers work.

Tim Wheeler
Forgotten 2009 first rounder scorching hot in AA… 1B, 2B, BB, K today. The double was off Dwyer.
yessir
and those 18 xbhs out of 32 ain’t too shabby either eh?

Lefties were an issue for him in the past, but this year, he’s murdering both lefties and righties… 1.140 OPS vs RHP and a 1.006 OPS vs LHP. If you want to ding him, his OPS at Tulsa is 1.379 vs “just” 827 on the road, but the road number is improving thanks to a 4-7, HR, 2B, 4 BB showing the past couple days.

Pretty scant day for Rays notables although Hak-Ju continues to tear it up and no on seemed offensively bad except for Mayobanex, who, if he isn’t playing catcher, isn’t really significant anyway.
Kyle McPherson

On the year, 42.2 IP 35 H 38 K 1 BB 2 HR 2.74 ERA
The Pirates added him to the 40-man over the offseason despite the fact that he’s 23 and still in A+. John tagged him as a sleeper alert in the book, and he’s recently started getting a little bit of love from scouts. I’ve seen him a couple times this year: 90-94 FB without a ton of movement, good change and good curve. He’s inconsistent with command of all three pitches, and the FB is too straigh to be a plus, but both the secondaries could get swings and misses eventually. He needs to start moving up, but he’s a possible 3 or 4 starter I think.
Looked like a middle reliever when I saw him last year
He certainly didn’t seem to have enough to be a #3. Here’s what I saw:
McPherson started the second game for West Virginia. His fastball had a good bit of velocity early in the game, frequently hitting 92-93 on the stadium gun and touching 95 twice. By the fourth and fifth inning, however, he was sitting 88-90 with a few even slower than that. He threw a handful of curve balls that clocked in anywhere from 71-77 MPH without a lot of break. His changeup was the off-speed pitch he used most frequently; it had a decent amount of drop and arm-side fade while coming in anywhere from 77-82MPH. He controlled his stuff well enough, but lived in the upper part of the zone, inducing a ton of fly balls. He screamed middle reliever to me.

looks a lot better now
Works in the low 90s even late in the game now, and the curve is much improved. He throws it consistently at around 77 and with 11-5 break, though he does have trouble commanding it at times. The change is still as you described it. He seems to be working on the command issue you described in the last sentence: he’s a strike-thrower, but he misses spots and leaves the ball up too often. He’s getting better at it, though; when he’s on, he’s hitting the bottom of the zone and commanding at least one of the secondaries for swings and misses.
SI.com recently quoted a scout saying he looks like he could be the ace of the Pirates right now, but that’s obviously hyperbole. There’s also a favorable scouting report from a couple weeks ago on bucsprospects.com (though I know there are some people who are skeptical about that site, and I personally don’t agree with most of what he says there about the quality of the individual pitches).
I know Mike Newman mentioned about a month ago that he heard the Pirates had changed McPherson’s arm angle at some point last season. I don’t know if that’s the reason for the change, but McPherson does look now like he could be a ML starter at some point. Number 3 is more of a ceiling than a likely outcome, though.
coincidentally
In today’s chat, KG named McPherson the “best unknown prospect” in the Pirates’ system. I don’t know what to make of that, since unknown prospects are almost by definition not good prospects, but there it is.
Garrett Gould
now 34 IP 20 H 31 K 8 BB 1.59 ERA in 6 starts in A Ball in the midwest league in his age 19 season..\
has he vauled himself to a top 100 prospect?

Daniel Carroll, CF High Desert Mavericks
He is having an interesting year.
4 for 4 tonight, HR, 2b, SB, BB
He already has more BBs (22) than last year in 1/3 of the games played. He also has 18 SB, and is sure to set a career mark there as well.
Francisco Martinez: 2-3 with his second hr in as many days. Hitting .313/.378/.750 over the last 10 games.
he's interesting
I saw him last week, and he certainly “looks like a ballplayer”. Big, athletic, pretty smooth on defense at 3B, and had at least one good AB where he went the other way and lined a base hit to RF. I’m not sure why the Tigers have felt the need to rush him to AA already, but given some time to develop he may end up turning into a real nice prospect.
Yeah...
I’m not really sure what the Tigers are doing with a lot of their players. Martinez should be repeating the FSL, and Daniel Fields should probably still be in low-A, but they couldn’t demote him after he held his own after last year’s rush job.
You sure are right about Martinez looking the part, though.
Frazier
What a huge turnaround for him. He was starting to look like a complete non-prospect and all of a sudden in the last couple weeks, he has done a 180 and looks like he could be somebody after all.
The wind is in the buffalo.
