Big Cubs pitching day
AAA – Jay Jackson.
AA – Trey McNutt.
A+ – Nick Struck.
A – Austin Kirk.
Peoria’s done already, losing to Clinton 5-4 in 14. Kirk went 5.1, giving up 1 run on 4 h, 1 bb, 1 WP, 1 balk, and getting 6 K’s to go with a 4:2 GO/FO ratio. On the season, he has a 9.62 K/9, 2.79 BB/9, and a 0.90 WHIP. Very solid start to the year for the 09 3rd round pick.
Matt Szczur: 2/5, 2 RBI, 1 BB. Looking better the last few weeks, and is making good contact. Power may take time, if it develops, but he’s also running the bases fairly well.
Cubs
let’s see, good day for Nick Struck as Daytona won 5-4.
Struck: 6 shutout, 3 h, 3 bb, 7 K’s, 1 HBP, 5:1 GO/FO. On the season, 2.9 BB/9, 8.71 K/9, 1.33 GO/AO. Not bad for a 21 year old 39th round big overslot.
Junior Lake: 2/4, 1 R, SB, E. The scary thing is … on the season, in 110 AB’s, he’s walked … 0 times.
Jae-Hoon Ha: 1/3, 1 2B, 1 R, 1 BB.
Matt Cerda: 1/3, 1 R, 1 BB.
Not sure why McNutt didn’t pitch for Tennessee. Tennessee lost 5-4 to Mobile.
BJax: 1/3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB.
DJ LeMahieu: 1/4, 1 2B, 1 K. He’s showing some more power, probably due to the strength program, but he’s still more preferable if he can stick at 2nd.
Ryan Flaherty: 1/4, 1 3B. Very curious how he got a 3B.
Josh Vitters: 2/4.
Jay Jackson struggled a bit in Iowa, giving up 8 h and 3bb in 4.1 ip, leading to 5 R. 4:4 GO/FO, 2K’s.
how is Hoon Ha's
season really going so far? I see his OB% is nice, without even looking up the ISO his power is definately THERE but is he really developing like you had hoped?
This Kid looks like the real deal

I think I'm still wary
but a lot of Cubs fans are really intrigued by him. I’m also curious if this power stays, as the power production is far greater than what he had last year. He’s reportedly playing a decent CF, and most have felt that whereas a guy like Guyer, who was loosely comparable in terms of tools, could spot in CF, Ha, in the right situation, might be a guy who could stick in CF (granted, most indications are that he’s a slight notch below BJax, and with Silva and Szczur in Low A, if Ha makes it up with the Cubs, it’ll likely be in a corner role),
I’m just wary of a guy with a 3.5% walk rate, who has shown some improvement but it’s at best minimal. I’m cognizant of the fact that he isn’t viewed as a hacker, and I’m also of the belief that you don’t want him to lose his instincts. If he puts it together, he’s a pretty intriguing asset.
I’ll admit I didn’t expect him to do this well, so in terms of expectations, he’s far exceeded mine, at least, so far.
Not today
but Carlos Martinez makes his debut tomorrow at Quad Cities

Crap!
That’s about an hour drive for me up to Appleton, but I have a prior engagement this evening. I’d love to go.

Sorry for the interruption, but I’ve gone blank as to what happened to Rodriguez to start the season. Could someone jog my memory for me? Thanks!
yes, sadly this guy is underrated
its not like the stankees need any more pitching prospects that back end-rotation problem won’t be an issue for too long

Robbie Erlin, good god
7 IP | 1 H | 1 ER | 0 BB | 8 K | 1 HR
He had one 3 ball count all night.
>mfw
4 hits in his last 21 innings. 13 in the 36 total innings. 10:1 K:BB
he’s too good for high A hitters
>mfw
freaking awesome
I was trying to add him in some deals this offseason in fantasy and people told me he was an “OK” prospect, know, hes not going anywhere

He still may just be an OK prospect, but he's too advanced for High A hitters.
He needs to move up to AA to be challenged.
Agreed.
They were talking about him on the most recent Up and In: The Baseball Prospectus podcast. Jason Parks commented on how impressive his fastball command and movement was, while his velo sits around 91.
yep
pretty sure parks has also said at one point that he wouldn’t be surprised if, by the time he gets to the Majors, Erlin adds a 2-seamer and a cutter to his arsenal and is able to spot them like he can his current fastball
>mfw
Ranaudo
This wouldnt be worth mentioning if he didn’t play for an East Coast team, but Ranaudo gave up a hit and a walk, while striking out 6 across 6 innings today.

nice work
Hak-Ju Lee has his average back up to .397 he is absolutely tearing the ball up.
Desmond Jennings has a little extra pressure with Guyer hitting the homerun, if Guyer performs well he could force the Rays to keep him up there and maybe DFA someone like Dan Johnson when they need a starter.
With Guyer, Dietrich, Lee, and Jennings all performing well the Rays hitters are starting to balance out the prospects with the pitchers, The Rays should have the #1 class after this years draft without a doubt even graduating Hellickson, Mcgee, Jennings, and Guyer.
As I said below, I'm not quite buying some of the breakouts thusfar
Hak-Ju I’m impressed with. 9:16 K:BB to go along with 8 XBH and 6 SB with his glove at SS. Obviously he is riding a BABIP high, but he has shown the ability to command the zone in the past and is seemingly continuing it this year (despite the rising K%). I was low on Hak-Ju coming into the year, but he’s definitely impressing and if this keeps up in any capacity then he’ll just keep jumping.
If Guyer can maintain a power surge and good defense in a corner outfield spot then I’m happy, but I’m concerned he doesn’t have the power or plate approach necessary to fit long-term in the COF. That being said, I don’t expect him to keep swinging and missing (he had something absurd like a 2% Swinging strike rate last year IIRC), so if he can put up some nice LD rates then maybe we can see a high average out of him to balance out the relatively lacking power and discipline.
It’s definitely been a good year thus far for the hitting prospects, though, I just would rather have preferred less dissapointments among the pitching prospects.
Just another note, how about the organization’s defense-first catching prospects in the upper minors, Nevin Ashley and Jose Lobaton. I always liked Lobaton as a potential platoon (he hits lefties well), but he’s hit .339/.433/.536 in 58 AB this year with a 10:14 BB:K ((doing better against righties too, .1070 OPS vs. .671 for lefties). Ashley’s been even more surprising hitting .310/.404/.560 with a 10:16 BB:K in 84 AB with 5 HR. Obviously the samples aren’t big enough to start buying anything, but they aren’t even having absurd BABIP luck and for guys with plus gloves at catcher if either could amount to anything at all offensively that’d be great. I’m not saying they will, but this is better than if they were struggling.
Hak-JU
also isn’t blocked at the big league level…
by Rupert Pupkin on May 7, 2011 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions
Lots of fringey middle-infield guys, though
Bortnick/T-Becks/Figueroa/Mayora/S.Rod/Brignac are all interesting guys in some way who can play the middle infield and are farther along than Hak-Ju is. Its obviously preferable to being a 3B prospect in the organization, but there are just a lot of MI and C. Not great MI or C, but lots of them.
Some thoughts on Dietrich and Bailey
I’m not buying the breakout of the two Bowling Green Hitters putting up nice starts just yet (Derek Dietrich and Luke Bailey). Dietrich has a 5:21 K:BB rate thus far in 75 AB. Bailey has a 4:20 K:BB rate in 64 AB. Bailey’s line is .313/.362/.563 and Dietrich is at .320/.379/.627. While the power showing from both is nice, they both have BABIPs over .400 and some of those hits will stop falling. Hopefully the power maintains and the lines keep up for the most part, but if they don’t start controlling the zone better then they’ve shown then
Tavares
He has just been red hot in his first 10 games this year. Very nice to see him get over his minor injury after the second game.
The Cardinals have a very good prospect on their hands in Tavares.
Bryce Harper is UNDER - hyped
Dayan Viciedo is heating up. He had his second straight 3-hit night, and 3rd in last 4 games. now hitting .303 4 Homers, 21 Rbi in 26 games.
Moustakas went 0-4 with 3ks. Probably putting a bit of pressure on himself since his homboy got the call. Relax kid . . . as If he reads this blog lol
Dee Gordon 0-5
Trayvon Robinson 4-4 w Homer, Double. I havent been a big believer in Robinson but, he is red-hot right now.
Ackley just homered. I think he’s actually a new, unique type of player – the three true outcomes second baseman – walks, homers, and harmless grounders!
Mike Trout went 1-2 with 3 walks, a Triple, a Steal.
Nick Franklin 1-3 with Double, Wal after being out of the lineup for a couple days.
Gary Brown went 5-6 with 2 Doubles and 6 Rbi. He was kind of an afterthought to me but he is having an outstanding season thus far for San Jose in the Cal League. maybe I should think about him more.
Brett Lawrie just answered Dustin Ackley’s homer with a 3-run bomb of his own in Tacoma. I wonder if they know they are going head to head? lol
Oh and Dr. Bryce Harper went 2-3 with 2 Doubles, and a walk and a great young player.
.368 .466 .724 he’s unreal
