Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Milb Gameday, May 3rd

I love the smell of baseball, and grass, in the morning :) Ok, its not really morning to most of you but,  I saw that some ballgames were going allready so I thought I'd fire one of these up. Here's some starters taking the hill today. Just the ones from teams I like though ok? Just kidding. I like every team.

AAA -  Danny Duffy, Mike Minor,   Lance LynnRudy OwensFelix DoubrontZach McAllister

AA  -  Jacob Turner, Matt Packer,  Nate Eovaldi,  Pat Corbin,  Nevin Griffith,  Erasmo Ramirez, Carlos Pimental (vs the Mighty Missions of San Antone'),  Chris Dwyer,  Christian Friedrich

A+ and A -  Jarred Cosart,  Matt Magill,  Big Matt Lollis,  Chad Bettis,  Chris Balcom-Miller,  Kyle Heckathorn, Carlos Perez, Austin Ross

Manny Machado went  0-4 this morning just to show he's human. Made 4th error as well. By the way, 4 errors in 24 games played is terrific for that league. Not even mentioning that he's a child basically. He's been amazing. Before you say it, his range is fine, by the way.

Bryce Harper went 2-5 already to show that he isn't human. I love how he's showing off an all-around game that some had questioned previously. He stole his 5th base off of Carlos Perez and Christian Betancourt. What he is doing in that league, at his age, is more than amazing.

Taijuan Walker promoted

So much for waiting until the Short-Season leagues to see him. He is now with Low-A Clinton, according to Kirby Arnold of the Everett Herald. Marinersfarmreview.com says Walker will start on Thursday against Peoria.

Possible reasons for the delayed Sizemore promotion

Not gritty enough? Then again, who is when contrasted with the grinder extraodinaire who is Will Rhymes.

I believe Scott Sizemore went to VCU. Maybe Dave Dombrowski is a KU basketball fan & wanted to stick it to him after the Elite 8 matchup? That’s all I’ve got.

by Matt0330 on May 4, 2011 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Ok ok ok

I agree that Sizemore is better than Wil Rhymes but, a couple of things have been annoying me a tad when I keep reading “Why hasn’t Sizemore been called up?!?”

How about a couple of reasons, namely, Sizemore did SUCK when he got a chance to play last season!

and Wil Rhymes got about 80 PAs to show what he can do this year after playing very well in 200 PAs last year.

I hope Sizemore does well but, its hard to get too excited about a guy who couldn’t beat out Wil Rhymes in spring training.

he had no chance to beat him in ST

in my opinion. He was hitting pretty well and driving in a lot of runs, but they barely gave him any PT

by PrincetonCubs on May 4, 2011 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Alright

Well, they probably felt Rhymes earned the position with his fine play the last couple months of last season. They obviously kept an open mind becaue, here we are, its May 4th and Sizemore is the starter again. Either that, or Rymes was just that bad.

he’s positioning himself for a callup if the need arises. is he ahead of Mazzaro or Teaford though since they’re both on the 40. Teaford maybe…Mazzaro probably not.

Luke Bailey

Today: 1-3, 2 K

I’m a big fan of Bailey, so far he’s putting up decent early season numbers in Bowling Green so far. The BB/K isn’t good at 4:19, and the BABIP is a totally unsustainable .400, but the power definitely looks for real, 7 doubles, 2 homers (9 extra base hits in 16 total hits), .241 ISO.

by gore51 on May 3, 2011 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

He has good defense too.

Although Hamilton is owning him and has stolen like half the bases off of him.

by mr. maniac on May 4, 2011 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

well, there's not necessarily too much Bailey could do about that

Hamilton would probably do the same to most major league catcher, true 80 speed.

Brett Wallace homered today

http://houston.astros.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?tcid=mm_hou_vid&c_id=hou

Still riding an insane BABIP, but he IS hitting .383/.448/.543 so even significant regression should leave him with solid numbers.

He won’t keep OPSing .991 obviously, but is .800+ attainable? I think so. And so, after tonight, I expect will ZiPS, which before tonight projected him to finish the season with .793.

Starting to heat up

Matt Davidson: 2-4, 2 HR (3,4)

by BigG'S on May 4, 2011 12:05 AM EDT reply actions

Good stuff

Matt Davidson & Paul Goldschmidt were 2 of my favorite CI prospects in the offseason that I seemed to like quite a bit greater than the consensus. Sort of strange that they both reside in the same farm, but I think both have very nice offensive potential to say the least.

From what I gather, I don’t think that Davidson is necessarily a lock to move across the diamond either. It will be interesting to see how the switch hitting Bobby Borchering develops as well although I think he has the most short term hurdles to vault of the Arizona trio.

by Matt0330 on May 4, 2011 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Anthony Rizzo

3-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI.

I restate my fact that Rizzo will be in the majors in June and Brad Hawpe will be DFA’d…

by Antonio Olivares on May 4, 2011 1:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Brad Hawpe

Yes, this is a site dedicated to prospects but what a descent Brad Hawpe’s career has taken. Granted he was aided by the Colorado setting to some degree almost assuredly & he always had a good amount of ‘swing & miss’ at the plate, but he posted a line of .285/.384/.519 not too long ago (2009). Time takes its toll everywhere but it seems to have leveled this guy..

Wow i think its safe to say i underrated this guy

its almost like it really goes : Hosmer, Rizzo, Freeman, Goldshmidt, Belt, blah blah

he is now up to a line of .370/.427/.630 with 6 HR

Brandon Guyer

It will be interesting to see how his power translates when he arrives in the majors, but he stands to be valuable in some capacity & he should have a look at a corner OF spot. Can we say anthing more about the Matt Garza deal from the Tampa Bay perspective which hasn’t already been said?

Yes

I would add that Hak Ju Lee is going to better than almost everyone has even imagined – really, really, good

Checking up on some Astros prospects after April

Long list, but these are all guys I consider noteworthy for reasons OTHER THAN their performances this season.

Carlos Quevedo: 21 K, 2 BB, 28 IP, 3.86 ERA

Altuve is AMAZING. People keep on doubting, and he keeps on kicking butt.
At least Villar has stole a bunch of bases right?

I like Altuve too and, Im a real sucker for excellent ballplayers who are shaped different than most of the other ones.

He strikes out a ton

That plus he’s not very athletic and is an average defensive first baseman at best. His power seems legit though and he draws a good amount of walks.

I wouldn’t mind seeing someone give him a chance to win an everyday job at first base but he might have too many holes in his swing. Hard to say unless/until we see him against MLB pitching.
