NOW HIRING SCOUTS! Chicago White Sox Mock Org. Diary

Well, folks, I just got tabbed to be the GM for the White Sox in this years mock draft. The goals are simple to me - To Try to reverse the trend of the not so great drafting of the White Sox's first choice, while waiting 'til the 47th pick to do so.

I am not an expert on the talent available but, I think I can recognize a good ballplayer when I see one and that is why ANY suggestion from anybody from this community will be heard. We need as many scouting eyeballs as we can get!

The Sox have a long history of drafting a college player with thir first pick . . . Chris Sale last year, Jared Mitchell, Gordon Beckham, Aaron Poreda, Kyle McCullough, Lance Broadway, Josh Fields, Brian Anderson,  Roger "Royce" Ring. In fact, Kenny Williams has not had a draft in which he picked a HS ballplayer first since his first draft as GM of the Sox, in 2001 when they took RHP- Kris Honel. Not coincedentally perhaps, he may be the only player on that list you havent heard of.

Just an observation but It looks like the White Sox (who are notorious for being one of the only teams who stay within slot money for the most part) have attempted to do something that may be difficult to do sucessfully with the top choice in a draft - go both with upside, and with a college player. It may work when you pay a little more, like with Gordon beckham (though the jury is still out there) but, some of the other players were college players who looked to be better athlete's than players.

I like the trend started with Chris Sale. Not the fact that he's a pitcher but, the fact that he's a player who is excellent and, because of his delivery or body type, peiople passed on him! So, anybody out there who sees a guy who overlooked like that, in any way, let me know and we'll take a look at him! Id rather go with a guy who has proven he can PLAY but, maybe smaller or fatter than people like than a player like Mitchell, who was/is more atghlete than ballpoayer apparently. I dont want a non-athlete- I want somebody who's athletic ability may be hidden, like a Pablo Sandoval.

The Sox again pick 47th in the supplemental round, then a pick in round 2 around 83rd (not sure yet exactly, and one in round 3 around113th (again not sure of the exact pick yet)

Here is an excellent website i just stumbled on that will give some an idea of who will be available with our first selection . . .

Feel free to tell me who we should start to look at / realistically hope will drop to us with pick 47, or what you believe the White Sox's orginizational needs are. Lets do this right! Any suggestions appreciated!

Interesting

http://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?overall_pick=47&draft_type=junreg&

Above is the draft history of the 47th choice in the draft. I thought it was interesting to see

A) What a team is up against to get any kind of results from that pick
B) The fact that besides tago last year, and heckathornthe year before – who BOTH have nice potential thier hasn’t been a good ballplayer picked with that pick in a while.
C) BUT, in a 4 year stretch in 1984 the Braves took Tom Glavine and in 1987 the Indians took Albert Belle.

Needs

Just really beginning to look at orginizational needs but, just from this list it looks like starting pitchers with talent might be a big need, which would fall in line with what this draft is sadi to be loaded with – pitching!
