Teheran
7.2 IP 3 H 4 BB 2 ER 7 K
But, lets remember that since he had one bad start in the majors in Philadelphia, he no longer has ace potential, according to many readers of this site.
He should have...
…a nice long minor league career with another cup-o-coffee or 9 before retiring at age 39 from the Buffalo Bisons or maybe Durham Bulls.

Now for a REAL Prospect... at least #48!
Jesus Montero goes Yard (#2) with 2 men aboard to give S/W-B Yanks a 2 run lead in the 8th.
Also SO X2.

Sorry, my sarcasm probably didn't portray my point
But after Teheran did poorly in his major league start the other day, several people on this site said that Teheran was a guy who had the upside of a number 2 or 3 starter, which I found a little absurd, considering before that he was pretty much universally thought of as a guy with ace upside.
I also think many people here jump at small samples far too quickly.
Teheran BA chat
I think it was Jim Callis who said he liked Teheran more than Latos already in a BA chat recently. It was definitely on BA.
They never stop
These same reactionary people said Hosmer was finished after his first season in pro ball.

My follow-up post may have had a tinge of sarcasm as well.

Viciedo in the OF
If he can play RF without embarassing himself in AAA, he should be able to play a capable LF at the major league level. Seems like bringing back Konerko and signing Dunn has not blocked him after all.

Dayan Viciedo
It seems like he is overlooked hastily quite a bit these days. I think he could settle in at LF in the future for CHW assuming what you state above.
was it by chance
with 2 men aboard to give S/W-B Yanks a 2 run lead in the 8th?

Tim Wheeler 1-2 HR(10)
Trying to find a reason he shouldn’t be a consensus mid-season top 100 prospect.

getting a little jumpy
we aren’t quite at the mid-point yet. plus we aren’t even close to the mid-point of wheeler’s night, considering this game is in the 5th inning, and he’ll probably play in game 2 of the double header as well.
by auclairkeithbc on May 12, 2011 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions
didn't say we were at the mid-point
but the guy has 5 tools that rate at least solid-average and is raking at AA… At some point, the SSS argument loses credibility. Only negative I see is that he’s 23 already.
by another know it all on May 12, 2011 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions
His age is not a factor
23 is plenty young for AA. He was one of my pre-season breakout candidates, so I am very happy with his hot start, and I do believe in him. I’m just not sure he’s top 100 right now. Should be very very high on BA’s Hot Sheet tomorrow though. He’s had a crazy good week. Might deserve the #1 spot even.

RE
the sss argument loses credibility when the ss isn’t and sss…
Anyway, just to note, Tulsa is historically a park that boosts HR. And that is compared to the Texas league as a whole which is the most potent of the AA leagues.

the power
is the only thing that’s not going to continue for Wheeler. I just don’t see 100 prospects better than him. He looks like a poor man’s Colby Rasmus with the similar AA breakout, albeit at a different age.
by another know it all on May 12, 2011 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions
i too don't care about the age, much
But, I definitely can see the possibility. Strangely, it may be more likely MID-SEASON than OFF-SEASON, after this draft class comes. Its possible we’ll see 15-20 on the top 100 from this class.

Wheeler
has gone nuts, and while posting a 7:2 BB:K. Between him and Blackmon the Rox have a couple of interesting OF to take for a spin.

Agreed
The most underrated farm to me in the game is Colorado’s (even accounting for the travails of my boy Tyler Matzek). They’re pretty much a given to draft very well next month also.
My fondness for Charlie Blackmon is well documented & Wheeler is cut from the same cloth in many ways.
underrated farm
Yeah, that have had some very nice early season performances, and in the high minors. Lower down I’m waiting to see how Kyle Parker fares as the year wears on — I’ve been marginally worried by the lack of walks — but so far so good.

Furbush
7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 6 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 5:6 GO:FO (all 6 Ks came on swinging strikes)
Leonys Martin
First game — 2-2 (so far), 2B first AB.

Robbie Erlin
6 IP | 3 H | 1 R | 1 ER | 1 BB | 7 SO
Between 75-80 pitches. Had 64 through 5 ip, couldn’t get all of them in 6th. He had 15 swinging strikes through 5 as well. I’m not sure if he had any in the 6th.
Through 5 IP he had 64 pitches, 50 strikes
He had 15 swinging strikes. So at that point he had more swinging strikes than balls thrown.

Good stuff
Big Juan Nicasio guy – 51K to 8 BB this year in just over 40 IP. He’s in the right organization (hand in glove pretty much) & I’ll be interested to watch his progress the rest of the summer & beyond.
Omg! you're back.
Virus problems in the past? Also, no piggybacking my jokes.

Justin Wilson
Quietly very effective
7 IP, 1 H, O ER, 5 BB, 3 K
ERA now down to 2.36 for AAA Indianapolis
maybe my homer rankings of jennings and hellickson being lower than everyone else will pay off too
but in all seriousness, I was right, Sickels, et al were sorely mistaken on T-Bex
numbers
for Jesus Montero and Tim Beckham
.098 ISOP, .772 OPS, .333 wOBA
.095 ISOP, .775 OPS, .349 wOBA
How has his defense/range been this year?

Take this FWIW
KG has noted a couple times that scouts doubt Beckham’s ability to stick at SS. I think the concerns are more body-type related, as his range is already fringy and will only decline in the future.
i doubt KG's ability at his job
and i’ve commented on Beckham’s body-type plenty last year. he looks like Rickie Weeks or a running back / Ron Gant type. even if he doesn’t stick at SS, which may be the case since Brignac is excellent defensively and Lee is in the pipeline, I could see Beckham as a Weeks-lite
Two points
1. In this case, KG is just quoting scouts. In essence, you are doubting scouts, not KG.
2. Honestly because of that body type, Beckham would make a good 3B. Unfortunately for him, that position isn’t available in TB barring some sort of injury.
Just looking at things stricly from a defensive standpoint, I think Beckham will be better than Weeks. Weeks is prone to mental errors. Beckham seems to make the plays he should for the most part.
i don't have much of a problem doubting some unknown scouts
in regards to Tim beckham, because they continue to be wrong or at the least, very vague in their criticisms. I get much better first-hand info just from draysbay
Right
. . . about third base. I’d also like to add that 3b is not available to Tim Backham at the big league level becaue he has NOWHERE NEAR ENOUGH BAT for the position!
"if it first you don't suceed, maybe you just suck" - Kenny Powers
Actually....
Someone I know who watched a bunch of his plays last year said the opposite. He made some great plays but slopped up on a bunch of easy ones. He said Beckham has to get in front of the ball and square up quicker.
ttnorm (Connecticut): Ben, Tim Beckham had a nice week. It’s been a while since I have heard his name. What is his outlook at this point?
Ben Badler: Better conditioning, showing more of the athleticism he had when the Rays made him the first overall pick and now looks like a guy who could stick at shortstop, which was starting to look doubtful for a while. I don’t see him as a star or anything, but I think there’s at least a chance he becomes an average big leaguer.

Zach Stewart
Just aint showing anything in AA this year
6IP 9H 5ER 1K 1BB
Maybe he's just working on improving a certain aspect of his game?
His stuff looked pretty good in the handful of spring games that I saw.
The thing that I found strange about that game is the number of fly outs he recorded.

Average and OBP are slowly coming back up after a bad April.
Tanner Bushue
1 IP 4H 3ER 0 K 0 BB
18K in 38+IP in Single A. Another young Houston pitcher besides Folty with some weak stats…especially K/9
Lipka
3-6, CS …. I did get to see him play a week ago. smaller than i was expecting, but built well. could look Uggla-ish if he bulks up in the future. he looked very good defensively, actually. turned a nice DP, and really stuck in there even with the baserunner really heading towards him.
swing is nice and quick, and could see power developing down the road, but yeah, doesn’t really exist right now.
Edward Salcedo
3-6, 3 RBI, he’s now hitting 311(period not working on phone) for the season
I don't get it
the highest someone can hit is 1.000. How can this guy be hitting 311.00? Is he playing for Atlanta’s Low-A affiliate on the moon? If only you could properly post decimal places, I’d comprehend the meaning of this post!

Sarcasm?!
Even if your being sarcastic(which I hope) you wrote all that and you clearly know what I meant!
Yeah
Just breaking your balls – thought it was funny that you mentioned the period button wasn’t working. I’m not sure why playing on the moon would change the nature of percentages, but I stick by my story.
d'Arnaud
2-4, HR, 3 RBI
I’m guessing he was injured btw Apr 25 and May 8 (guessing his back flared up again), but would appreciate someone confirming that. Looks to be back on the right track now,
Concussion
Was on BA’s weekly minor league injury report, if you are a subscriber.
thanks
makes me feel just a bit better that his back was not the issue like in year’s past, although coming back from any sort of serious concussion injury is not good either, and not something if you want to have in the back of your head, literally and figuratively

Some others
A grouping of assorted minor league OF:
Charlie Blackmon: 3-4 with HR #8, 1 2b, 1 BB, 2R & 4 RBI.
Bryce Brentz: 4-6 with 1 R, 1 RBI & a SB (BA to date: .393)
Cory Vaughn: 3 for 4 along with 2 BB (OPS northwards of .900 but only 1 HR thus far)
Brandon Jacobs: 3 for 6 with 2 HR, 1 2b & 2 K; SLG .590 in the SAL
Domingo Santana: 2-4 with 3rd HR of 2011
Jacobs
has been a pleasant surprise all year. Another one to keep an eye on the walk and strikeout rates.
