CD

I’m completely in the minority but, I think Davis is a better ballplayer than Mitch Moreland and, still has a good career ahead of him. He needs a trade maybe?

I think a change of scenery would be good, but I don't think Texas should just give him away

And I don’t think many teams would be willing to trade anyone valuable for him

One could say the same about Brandon Wood

To me, it is up to the player to show something in the bigs. Both Wood and CD had their chances, and both have blown them up to this point.

by guru4u on Apr 10, 2011 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

MLB ABs...

Wood 455 – not even a fullk season, hardly time to pull the plug,
Davis 806 – I was hoping it was fewer, but still not enough to say all he’ll ever be is AAAA.

by cooper7d7 on Apr 10, 2011 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I am not suggesting AAAA

But still when a player has had 300+ ABs improvement in approach should be seen. Neither one has shown an ability to adjust to MLB pitching. The point rings true: Both are still young and still have potential (and therefore some value), but both have had ample opportunity to prove something and have not delivered on that promise. Both likely need a change of scenery at this point, but their respective teams would only be getting 50 cents on the dollar if they were to be dealt.

I know Wood is out of options – I assume CD is on his last one?

by guru4u on Apr 10, 2011 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Davis

Remember that for the first 295 of those ABs, he hit .285 /.331/.549

by PissedMick on Apr 10, 2011 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

True

… but, Davis has hit a LOT more than Wood has. I thin Davis would be a star if they had just stuck with him . Guys who have huge swings are going to have inconsistency, its hard to avoid that.

The same could be said of Wood really. He may not have been a star but, probably better If he had gotten at least a 3-4 month run at a job. oh well, the Angels aren’t messin’ around, I guess. they got pennants to win!

by IHateMitchMustain on Apr 10, 2011 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, not a very good one. He was a very good pitcher and 1B at Rice, but never could regain his form as a pitcher in the pros. (I think there was an injury … a Rice pitcher injured? Never!)

I’ve been saying for two years they should try to convert him into a two way reserve player a la Brooks Kieschnick. Looks like that’s not going to happen, but he seems to have a better shot than I would have guessed to make the late conversion to full-time position player.

just found this...

Matt Lipka was apparently taken out of the game for something not injury related. Considering I don’t know what caused it and I’m not about to guess, I’ll leave it at that and continue to look for the answer….

Maybe discipline related? That would at least be better than injury.

by Rduffiedc on Apr 10, 2011 8:00 AM EDT up reply actions

ehh

I’d prolly rather have an injury ha, Lipka was a guy known for his make up and work ethic

by hybrid on Apr 10, 2011 8:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Here a first hand account of what happened from a couple folk who were there.

Lipka

I was at the Rome game tonight. Lipka hit a slow-rolling grounder right of the first base line in his first at-bat and didn’t run even though it looked like it may roll back into fair territory. Well, it definitely ended up fair. I’m pretty sure he got benched for it. He didn’t come back onto the field for the top of the second.

by jmeri on Apr 9, 2011 8:29 PM PDT

Just to reiterate was jmeri said about Lipka

He had an excuse me swing and it was a slow roller down the first base line. It did look like it was going to stay foul, but since he wasn’t running the Hagerstown players just let it roll just in case it did roll back into fair territory….well it did. They tossed it to first and Lipka was still standing in the batters box. He was definitely taken out because of it. I believe they even mentioned it over the local radio station in Rome that it was the reason he was taken out… I really liked the move by Rome’s manager. He has had a lot of success every where he has managed in the minors and lessons like this will do great things for a young guy like Lipka. I think he has learned his lesson. I could see him in the dugout and you could tell he was bothered by being taken out.

In other news… Bethancourt looks a lot better behind the plate so far. His arm is outstanding (threw a guy out on his knees the other night) and he is staying in front of balls (which he wasnt doing last year). Salcedo also looks really good. He looks more comfortable at the plate and I can now see the potential the Braves saw in him. It is still early, but I’ve liked what I’ve seen so far.

J.D. Martinez

Picking up where he left off last year. 3 for 5, 2 doubles, 4 RBI and a run scored (no strikeouts). This kid looks like a hitter. I’d expect him in the big leagues sometime this season, likely September unless there’s an injury, and hopefully the Astros can unload Lee in the offseason to make room for him in left field. Or… maybe Wallace doesn’t pan out and Lee has to move to first, but I really hope that doesn’t happen.

Plouffe can play a pasable 2b.

Plouffe can play more than a passable 2B.

He’s a solid, if unspectacular SS. I’ve seen him a number of times, including on Thursday. He always impresses me a bit. Busy hands before his swing, though. The guy is a major league player. A lot of teams do worse… though he’s not going to hit all that much and he’s not a defensive whiz. He’s a legit up the middle player who can hit some. That has value. In another org he would have gotten a shot already.

Any insight as to why he wasn’t promoted to AAA Rochester? I figured he’d done enough in AA in ’10.

by Matt0330 on Apr 11, 2011 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Twins minor league record sucked balls last year.

They brought in a bunch of minor league vets which, in turn, forced some prospects to stay where they were last year. Chris Parmalee is still in AA with him, too, for example.

Plus the Twins ARE the slowest team to promote position players.

by Kyleb_82 on Apr 12, 2011 7:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Chris Parmalee

didn’t deserve a promotion. Guys at premium offensive positions who post <800 OPS don’t put themselves on the fast track. If anything, he’s lucky there isn’t much positional depth at 1B, because in plenty of organizations he would have had a serious problem making it out of camp this year.

Benson’s a different situation. Remember, they were aggressive with him out of camp last year and he absolutely SUCKED in New Britain. He needed time to go back down to Ft. Myers, and then rebounded nicely on his return to the EL. Even if they’re being somewhat cautious now, it’s pretty easy to understand why they want to avoid making the same mistake twice. If he produces, I’d imagine he’ll be among the early movers this year.
