Not minor leagues but . . .

Danny Hultzen going for UVA this morning due to rainout last night. Has a 1 hitter through 3 innings.

My question is this: Does anyone have an issue with the way he crouches all the time before he delivers? He seemingly crouches 6 – 12 inches in his stretch and then also before he begins his windup. I always thought a pitcher wanted to be taller and use his leg drive to deliver the pitch. Obviously the results have been fantastic so maybe this is a non-issue, but I just don’t see that kind of a crouch very often from big league pitchers.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

I don't have a big issue with it

as I think he uses it as a way to balance and push. That said, there are far more knowledgeable folks on pitching mechanics out there than me ….

Hultzen tagged for a 6 spot in 6th

I think a lot of people are going to be curious if he can hold up his new found stuff and velo through the entire season. Haven’t heard anything on the inning or his stuff today, though, so maybe it’s not an issue.

Best pitching prospect nobody's talking about?

Juan Nicasio

15 IP, 20/1 K/BB, 1.80 ERA

Throwing for AA Tulsa today, John ranked him as a B prospect and said his stuff would translate well to AA. Looks good so far, won’t be under the radar much longer throwing like this

Agreed

Am a big fan too although now it seems as though this community is a bit more receptive to him after a couple of starts.

He’s already 24 so some might hold that against him a little bit but he’s virtually the quintessential Colorado arm in terms of his similarities to a couple of their current rotation placeholders & he has ver tangible upside. I like him quite a bit.

Cubs today

Nothing too interesting on the pitching front (rehabbing Ramon Ortiz in AAA), although one of my favorite sleepers/breakout possibilities is throwing in A+ in Nick Struck. Three semi-intriguing lefthanders are also scheduled to toe the rubber (Brooks Raley, Cam Greathouse, Graham Hicks).

What do we think of Carlos Perez?

I love his K:BB ratio and his consistency as a hitter. Where does he end up on the top 100 next year?

by asyouwish33 on Apr 23, 2011 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he was already on people’s top 100, although in the lower portion, but I’m personally waiting to see how the power develops. He hasn’t really shown HR power yet.

Chris Wallace (C)

Astros sleeper went 4/5 last night with a homer and two triples. Currently second in the minors in OPS with 1.375 (and leads all single A hitters). He is old for the level, but keep an eye on him, a promotion has to be in the cards soon if he keeps this up.

Paul Goldschmidt

I’ts good to see this as I honestly never saw much difference between Goldschmidt & the much more ballyhooed Jerry Sands at the plate (& never hesitated to say it). The power is absolutely real here & I think he’ll see Arizona at some point in 2011. Very overlooked guy this offseason in my estimation.

It’s bittersweet just like when a favorite band gains mainstream acceptance, but Goldschmidt is on his way now. Godspeed, Paul.

Also, to the Brett Wallace doubters

Slugging doubles

Many doubters thought he would not hit for the power needed for his position. You are basically supporting that argument when you single out that performance in my opinion.

by ROBERTS04 on Apr 23, 2011 11:43 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Yeah

Pretty sure slugging .450 is the definition of a doubles hitter.

by Jaeti on Apr 24, 2011 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Are you actually trying to imply

That hitting two doubles is a bad thing? Really? Regardless, of course he isn’t going to have plus-plus power. It’s not his game. But last time I checked, power is only one part of offensive prowess.

If he can maintain anywhere close to this OBP, then he won’t need to hit for plus power to be a good player. Daric Barton was worth 4.9 WAR last season and he batted .273/.393/.405. (Of course, Barton is also a plus fielder, but I think Wallace’s glove has been underestimated and he will be at least average at 1B.) Billy Butler might be a likelier comparison; he batted .318/.388/.469 and was worth 3.4 WAR with below average fielding.

While I agree that Wallace will probably never be a star-level player, I think he will be a good one. I’ve disagreed strongly with those who were already jumping to call him a bust, and at the moment he’s proving me right with a .376 wOBA—with the major caveat of SSS of course.

http://www.crawfishboxes.com

by OremLK on Apr 24, 2011 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions

The bad thing is that he's a first baseman with a .125 IsoP

Neither Barton nor Butler is a good comp for Wallace. Wallace has never shown anything like Barton’s (outstanding) walk rate, or anything like Butler’s contact ability. He’s got a high OBP at the moment because of an unsustainably high batting average. Once that goes away, what exactly will he do well?

by PissedMick on Apr 24, 2011 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

His walk rate is up to 10%

His strikeout rate is down to 19.7%. These aren’t amazing numbers out of context, but they’re good, and they’re great in context—the context being a young second year player who has consistently shown a pattern of hitting a lot of line drives and having a high BABIP. It means even once his BABIP normalizes, he should have maintain a high batting average (not this high) and a high OBP.

As far as power goes? It’s usually one of the last things to show up for a young slugger. .127 isn’t bad at this stage of his career. It’s right around MLB average. Not that ISO is even remotely stable at this point—you almost have to throw it out, the best numbers we have are walk rate and strikeout rate, and Wallace has improved both of those immensely.

That's fantastic if you have any idea how to evaluate it.

by PissedMick on Apr 25, 2011 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Did I ever say his current BABIP was sustainable?

The fact is (and the point I was making), he can be a valuable everyday regular with his current plate discipline numbers and a normalized BABIP.

by OremLK on Apr 25, 2011 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I do agree that the BB% so far is a great sign...

because Brett Wallace with a 6-7% walk rate (as his minor league career suggests) isn’t a good enough hitter to play first base full-time. If he can keep his strikeout rate at 20%, he’s probably a .280 hitter, and that .280/.350/.430 line a 10% walk rate would give him is reasonably valuable, I guess, in an off-year Michael Cuddyer kind of way.

2-4, 2 2B. Now spotting a 35% xbh% and .200 ISO to go with his plus contact rate in the early going.

Obviously it’s early, and obviously he still doesn’t walk enough, but if he keeps showing this kind of power in the next few weeks I think it will be time to start talking about him as a legitimate prospect again. Not a blue-chipper of course – he needs to learn to take a walk to avoid topping out at Jose Lopez with less power, all of which makes for a profile that tops out at something less than an elite prospect – but back on the map.
