Brandon Wood DFA'd

The Angels have DFA'd Brandon Wood.  While not a prospect in the proper sense of the term, Wood presents an interesting case due to his consistently strong AAA performance and his utter ineptitude so far in MLB.  I've created this thread to ask:

1. Does anybody still hold out hope for Wood salvaging his MLB career?

2. Is there a team which might present a good fit for Wood going forward?

3. Assuming Wood is a Quad-A player, what red flags are there that we might learn from going forward?

While most point to Wood's AAA k rate as a red flag, it was no worse than Mark Reynolds'.  Wood still has a glove that plays at SS or 3B (though, it looks as though he's more of a 3b going forward.)  Personally, I'm of the mind that if given an extended look in the Majors (the Alex Gordon treatment), Wood may well break through and turn into something resembling Brandon Inge

Brandon Inge might be a decent comp...

While Wood has amassed nearly 500 PAs in his career, I doubt that he’s had more than 150 of them in a consecutive stay in LA; he had ~250 in 2010 but consistent playing time was sporadic at best. I think a team with little playoff aspiration (Pirates, Astros, the expected suspects) will give him 500-600 PAs to see what he can do.

As a wild card (trying to think outside the box), I’d like to see the Blue Jays give him a shot – in 600+ innings at 3B, his UZR (and UZR/150 as a consequence) is very good. If his bat comes up to even near-league average, he’d hold value for them (especially with E5 now at DH full-time) with his defense.

The Jays have Lawrie coming up at 3B soon

I’m a Jays fan but I doubt we are a good fit. Wood probably wouldn’t deserve every day at bats over Lawrie or Escobar.

Not to mention that Jayson Nix has been pretty good so far

Definitely good enough for a stop gap.

Agreed

He is a lot better than watching Encarnacion throw fading throws to first.

I'd still like to see someone give him a shot at SS

His defense at SS has been adequate and it would reduce the amount of pressure on his offense. I agree with dbreer, somebody like Pittsburgh or Houston would make sense.

It’s also the kind of move I could see the Rays making.

by FI2 on Apr 21, 2011 12:39 PM EDT reply actions

Rays

I don’t see it at all, they obviously have Longo and are really giving Brignac a shot to see how he developes. Wood doesnt fit into the picture at all unless he would play 1B and I don’t see that happening.

by hybrid on Apr 21, 2011 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

They can park him in Durham

Can’t they? They have no obligation to keep him on the major league roster the way the Angels currently do.

That’s the only reason I suggested it. They can play him there at SS and 3B both and see what they have.

by FI2 on Apr 21, 2011 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

He would have to be in the majors...

which is why Wood is being Dfa’d and not optioned. I could see the Rays making a play for him after losing Manny. They have said they won’t have much money to replace his bat and Wood could be a cheap power who could play almost any position. SS, 3rd, 1st, RF, LF, or DH could all be options for him.

Isnt Cedeno pretty bad?

Could the Pirates give Wood a chance at SS?

by JamesS on Apr 21, 2011 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully

Cedeno is terrible. I can’t stand watching him play every night.

Don't see Houston bothering

Angel Sanchez (age 27 season) may not have Wood’s pedigree but he’s produced a lot more at this point, to be frank, and in a way which makes you think he should be at least remain a serviceable stopgap. He has a simple, contact oriented swing and a fairly low K rate. Right now I’m skeptical whether Wood is even a MLB player let alone an everyday regular.

Lets not compare his time in the majors in any way to Alex Gordon.

Gordon was a disappointment in the sense that he didn’t live up to his “all-world hype” right away and was hampered by injury. Maybe Matt Weiters would be an example to look at Gordon for hope, but Brandon Wood has been the majors worst player for the better part of 3 major league trials.

And even if you compare Mark Reynolds k rate to Woods, you’ll see that the only way the Reynolds became an above average major leaguer was to have great defense, speed, and a lot of home runs. And when he wasn’t able to sustain that, he’s had a hard time sticking as a major league regular.

Brandon Wood has a lot of work to do. He’ll get another chance because of what he had shown in the past, but I think it’s all still a thing of the past. A change of scenery was definitely necessary though and there’s still time for him to become average I suppose.

As an Angel's fan I'm very sentimental towards Wood and I wish him the best but...

I’m going to flip if he ever becomes a Reynolds type which is what I always hoped for.

How about Seattle?

I hardly see how we (I say “we” because I live here) have anything to lose really. I love jack Wilson as much as ther next guy, but the upside of taking achance on Wood is higher and I doubt the productiion this year is much worse. Wilson has OPS’d under .600 as a Mariner.

If Wood is a terrible bust in the next couple months, we will call up Ackley in June or July anyways.

Bring him home..

to AZ. We have 50 year old Melvin Mora at 3b, and are supposedly rebuilding.

Bring back the local boy and give him 500 Abs

by ScottAZ on Apr 21, 2011 5:57 PM EDT reply actions

yes

but since Wood is 5 years younger we can still pretend he might turn into something

by ScottAZ on Apr 23, 2011 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

the guy has had less than 500 plate appearances

spread out over the last 4 years. I do not think its fair to write him off yet. A team that isn’t gonna make the playoffs should give him a chance to stick at SS. He has shown that he is adequate defensively, and he has a lot more offensive potential than guys like ronny cedeno, jacob turner, alexi casilla, melvin mora, donnie murphy, yuniesky betancourt, clint barmes

Of course

But Yuniesky Betancourt is easily one of the worst players in the league.

If Jeff Francoeur

can stick in the big leagues why cant Wood? Atleast Wood plays a premium position…

by tbach81 on Apr 26, 2011 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

As crappy as Francouer is (and that’s pretty crappy), the step down from Ryan Howard to Francouer offensively over the last three years is much smaller than the dropoff from Francouer to Brandon Wood.

Francouer is run-of-the-mill crappy. Wood has been, to date, historically awful.

by realitypolice on Apr 26, 2011 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

yes, also +1

There are more than a few teams playing SSs and 3Bs who not only are poor to bad now, but offer no upside on ever being anything better. Sure, Wood had some red flags, but there are lots of guys who’ve struck out a ton (and still do) that are productive, overall.

Also, the Angels’ track record in handling prospects, esp. position players, hasn’t been exactly stellar. If the Angels had traded him to a different organization in 2009 or 2010, things might have developed differently for Wood.

I actually have a post going up on Beyond the Box Score in like ten minutes

That essentially argues that the Pirates should claim Wood and let him start in place of Cedeno.

A basic line of thinking: the Pirates are going to get horrible SS production no matter what, so they might as well play a guy like Wood that has some substantial potential. If he fails, they maybe win 65 games instead of 66-67 this year, but at least they got the opportunity to take a filer on a shortstop with 25-HR potential.

calling it a "great move" overstates it a tad.

picking up a horseshit mlb player with some possible, but fading, potential is a fine move for a horseshit baseball team. let’s not oversell things or you’ll end up having to use adjectives like supergreat and uberexcellent when you want to describe things that actually are great moves.

Best case...

Wood becomes a Phil Nevin type.
