Zach Britton
Britton is scheduled to make his first major league start this Sunday. Heres the link. Britton won the minor league pitcher of the year award and he posted a 1.35 ERA in orioles camp this spring to lead the team. I'm looking to pick him up in one of my leagues to replace Brian Matusz so I'm hoping he can debut in a big way. How does the community think he will do?

impressive movement so far
Will his velocity tick up as the game gets deeper? He had a few hard hit balls against him in the first.
looks like he's finished for the day
Final line 6 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 3 BB, 6 K
Velocity was consistently in the 89 – 93 zone with significant movement. Command was a bit off at times and had a tendency of leaving stuff in the middle of the plate when behind in the count, but overall an impressive debut. Had the ability to make quality strikes when he needed to and that sinker down and away from right-handers is unhittable (and responsible for most of his K’s).
Re:
I was pretty impressed. He looked like a lefty version of Tim Hudson with a little more velocity. I’m a fan…
very pleased with the outing. He sticks in the bigs because of this right?

for now anyway is the word around town...
At least until Matusz gets back, and I can’t imagine why they would send him down after that.
Probably up to stay
To me, Zach Britton’s future is as bright (if not brighter) than any of the other current young Baltimore arms & I think he’s likely to stay on and hone his craft at the major league level. I think they’ll make room for Britton when Brain Matusz returns.
very good description
if Britton has a Tim Hudson like career I am positively sure that the O’s will be very pleased! His stuff looked great for a 1st start. That sinker is for sure a plus pitch.
I drink your milkshake! I drink it up! Well Mr. Plainview, Devin Mesoraco and I drank lots of milkshakes, and we will drink yours too!

He looked very good but not that good ;)
I’m not sure he has secondary pitches like Hudson. And does he really throw harder? He was at 92 most of the game, when he dialed it up to 95 or 96 it was a flat fastball. Probably a four seamer? Anyways when he was throwing it 95 he didn’t have the same control and was missing up. For now that pitch isn’t a weapon until he can command it.
It’s only one start and I was impressed, but let’s not get carried away here.
Re
Well Huddy hasn’t averaged over 91 with his fastball since 2004 so it’s definitely possible. I flipped back and forth between the Braves and O’s on Sunday and, if the guns were accurate, Britton was definitely throwing harder. Aside from the velocity, I think his secondary pitches have similar movement to Hudson’s but obviously Britton can’t command them that well yet. He did get several swinging strikes with both the change up and the slider, so that’s a positive sign.
Like I said I’m a fan. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say he has the potential of a Tim Hudson who has been a very good number two for most of his career. I see a similar ceiling from Britton.
Ah, I thought you were comparing his stuff to vintage Hudson. my bad
Britton had an inconsistent slider but at thisnstage of his development that’s to be expected. He didn’t throw much of his breaking stuff in the zone though. That is where he will have to make his biggest adjustment . We saw matusz make this adjustment, same with Cahill. It will be interesting to see how Britton adjusts.
FYI
According to Fangraphs, Britton’s avg fastball was 92.8. I realize this is one game but Hudson has never averaged over 91.3 in a full season.
data problems
I believe there was an issue with how they dealt with cut/sinkers/4 seam/2 seam fastballs. I believe up to a certain year they were all lumped together and then they were broken out. I can’t be certain of this however.
Watched most of the start
I can agree that sinker was filthy, but his slider needs work.

the Rays looked bad didnt they?
without Crawford and no Damon in that lineup, they looked weak. Especially with Longoria out. Unless they make a move soon April could end their season when you figure they need 95 wins.
Baby Britton
can we agree on this as his nickname? It s fucking epic.
