He’s off to a good start in the Midwest League and his scouting reports from college support the idea, but we need to see what he can do against better pitching. If he remains hot, he’ll get to High-A later this year and maybe even Double-A if the Rays decide to be aggressive.

Matt Harvey

After his two starts, how would you project him?

harvey

It’s two starts…i don’t see any reason to change my pre-season projection just yet. I had him as a “strong Grade B”, possible ace starter if he throws strikes. He’s thrown great so far but I don’t think 11 innings is enough to conclude that he’s found the consistency that eluded him at times in college. Let’s see how he’s doing in June before bumping the grade to a B+.

If he does keep pitching like this, then he could be as high as an A- (or even maybe a straight A if all goes REALLY well) by the end of the year.

Keyvius Sampson

11IP 2H 1BB 0r 19K thus far. Best case scenario, what grade could you see yourself giving him next year?

by walnut falcons on Apr 14, 2011 11:14 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

samp

I have liked Keyvius since high school. My main worry is the health issue after what happened last year.

Best case, he stays healthy and keeps ptiching like this. That would make him an A- prospect I’d say, or an A if he dominates to this extent all year. More probably he’ll weaken at some point and end up in the B+ range.

Jurickson profar

Already has half as many hr’s as he had all of last year (though batting .150). Is there any power potential there and just how good can he be?

Also, where do you see Nolan arenado in 2 or 3 years? Does he have legit all star potential?

by DeathSpeculum on Apr 14, 2011 11:16 AM EDT reply actions

no sneaking

No sneaking two questions in.

Profar gets lots of attention so I’ll answer about Arenado. Two years from now, Arenado will be in Triple-A, hitting .300/.350/.445, with no obvoius place for him in the Colorado lineup and his name appearing in trade rumors.

Thoughts on Neil Ramirez...

by BombDiggity on Apr 14, 2011 11:23 AM EDT reply actions

ramirez

i love Neil Ramirez and rated him as a breakthrough guy pre-season. It looks like it is happening, granted as I said with Harvey we need more innings to be sure. But the scouting reports are great, Rangers sources are effusive, and he had all the “sleeper markers” pre-season. I had him as a B- pre-season but noted that his ceiling was quite high. I’d make him a B now, with helium.

I don't like Jagger because most of his songs are old blues songs that did not become famous, so he just put a white-person twist on them and mad a ton of money

Which I usually could usually live with, but he did not give ANY recognition to the blues musicians he took songs from. That’s what bugs me

by jackyz on Apr 14, 2011 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Not accurate

I mean, most of the Stones’ early, early stuff were straight blues & R&B covers & these guys wore their considerable ardor on their sleeves throughout their career. They covered Robert Johnson, Slim Harpo, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Robert Wilkins, Willie Dixon & a bevy of others – all of them cited also. Members recorded with blues artists repeatedly too – If we’re discussing rock & roll artists who owe a debt to the blues, it’s going to be an awfully long list.

Has shown more plate discipline so far this season, albeit in a very small sample size. If he gets to average in that area, will his defense in center allow him to become a major league outfielder?

by Travis Packer on Apr 14, 2011 11:50 AM EDT reply actions

austin

Well, like you said, it’s early, and he’s repeating the league. But it does look like he’s made some progress, and he is still young enough for the Cal League at age 20. He has the natural speed for center but there have been complaints about his route-running, and his arm isn’t good enough for right.

Carlos Matias (Martinez)

I’ve seen elsewhere that Matias could very well jump ahead of Shelby Miller this year. Do you agree? Is he a possible grade ‘A’ pitcher with ace potential?

by hunteralan on Apr 14, 2011 11:51 AM EDT reply actions

It is officially Martinez now fwiw

Since Miller is “a possible grade ‘A’ pitcher with ace potential,” barring injury it would be extremely surprising if Martinez was to jump ahead of Miller, IMHO.

Why did he change his name in the first place?

There’s three Carlos Marinez’ in the minors, and no Carlos Matias’. I’m going to call him Matias for the remainder of his career, for simplification purposes.

It is possible. He has the arm to be a grade A prospect, if the command and durability are there. Miller would still rank ahead of him for now, but it is plausable that Martinez could jump him if everything goes perfectly.

The angels seem to think so, but it is in their best interest for them to say that.

He’s errorless through seven games, with a mediocre range factor…yes, yes, minor league defensive stats have all kinds of issues and the sample is small. So far, though, the results are what you’d expect.

by John Sickels on Apr 14, 2011 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

baron

I’d be interested to know why you see him as a long-term sleeper.

The early returns are terrible. At age 20 he’s young enough to get a lot better, but it hasnt’ happened yet.

by John Sickels on Apr 14, 2011 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think the breakout is coming any time soon. Offensively, he'll look below-average to average as he matures, but if the defensive reports are true, he's got something few catchers have.

It sounded like in Spring Training, the veteran pitchers liked having him around. That’s why I wondered if maybe you had seen anything in Baron that could suggest he’d be anything less than terrible at hitting to one day be a regular in the bigs. (I have less doubt that he can be a Rob Johnson but one that can actually catch, so a regular backup)

At this point, there’s no way Jesus Montero plays his career in a Yankee uniform, right? Montero is starting off hot, but has nowhere to play in New York, which has a pressing need at starting pitching, and any other organization probably has Montero in the majors right now (or at least by June). The Yanks can’t let an asset like Montero just rot in AAA for the next 2 years, can they? Do the Yankees lack leverage in any trade talk featuring Montero because other teams know what the Yankees have no option but to trade him?

I guess the question is: how do you see the Montero situation playing out?

hmm….i really can’t think of a good comp. I know the Twins feel he has 15-20 homer raw power in that bat but it isn’t showing up on the field yet. Mike Cameron with a few less home runs?

by John Sickels on Apr 14, 2011 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

don't like the comp

lazy comp for a black OFer with plate discipline to be comp’d to Cameron. Completely different tool sets.

Cameron has much more power, a player good for 25-30 in his prime. Hicks could be half that. Hicks has already shown he can hit for an average while Cameron is a career .250 hitter. I think Hicks will more likely be in the .280-.290 range. They have different types of speed. Hicks isn’t a true burner and has more “strider” speed, such as a BJ Upton. Cameron has explosive speed, like an NFL running back. While Cameron has a solid arm, he doesn’t possess the rocket that Hicks has.

A better comp all around for me would be BJ Upton with a higher average (minus the big 2007 season).

by 4dizzle on Apr 14, 2011 12:19 PM EDT reply actions

gose

I can see him becoming an elite defender, yes. But his bat is a real problem for me…poor plate discipline, weak power, ineffective use of speed on the bases. He’s still very young but has a LOT of work to do to reach even Bourjos’ level with the bat.

but the glove is great, i agree.

saw Gose play at the Compton Academy numerous times and I thought he was a MUCH better prospect as a pitcher. For all the talk of him being a tool shed the only real tools there is his arm and his speed. He takes a big man’s cut at the plate and seems to think he has more power than he really has. Why AAA for Lambo?

Why would Pittsburgh move Lambo up to AAA? It’s not like he dominated AA, that’s for sure… and it’s clear that he is woefully overmatched in AAA so far. Just another example of Pittsburgh stupidity?

lambo

Well he has 211 games of Double-A under his belt. Sometimes guys get promoted because it is “time” for them to move up even if they haven’t played that well. I don’t really have an issue with the Pirates doing this…it is time for lambo to make some adjuments and maybe they felt he would respond to the challenge.

Well he has some pretty signfiicant issues with the changeup last year. It is plausable he can fix this, but the Royals have a lot of starting pitcher candidates and if Crow continues to thrive in releif (and I think he will), he’s got the stuff and attitude to close when/if Soria moves on. He COULD return to the rotation, but I’m just thikning tha he fits well as a closer.

With Kyle Blanks headed out to San Antonio for a rehab assignment starting today, it seems as good a time as any to ask… What about him – aside from the fact that they drafted him high and identify him as a key piece to bring back in the Gonzalez trade – makes Rizzo a better long-term prospect than Kyle Blanks?
I know they were in different contexts, but I’m having a really hard time seeing how Blanks – who hit for better average and power in short season, Low-A and Double-A – isn’t at least as interesting…

The glove at third gives him a bettrer chance than the bat alone would. He’s got to get the strike zone under somewhat better control I think. If that happens, he can be a solid regular although I don’t see him as a star.

Well if he keeps this up he’ll be in AA shortly and we’ll get a better view then on his future. His first two starts he was just way too good for the competition.

I’d say he spends most of this year in AA. If he keeps pitching anything close to this, he could be in the majors later this year. More probably he’s a promotion sometime in 2012.

With Ramos establishing himself currently in the bigs and off to a nice start, do you see him seizing the long term role behind the plate, and Norris eventually being moved to being the Nat’s 1B of the future. I for one think his bat plays very well there, but not sure about his defense or the teams overall plan for him.

Thanks for your insight as always John.

I know he’s not a gold glove but I think Norris has made a lot of progress defensively and can stick there if they want him to. If Ramos keeps going they will have some decisions to make. I see Norris as a low-batting-average-high-walks-high-power slugger, something like Mickey Tettleton or Gene Tenace were back in the 70s and 80s. He’ll have more value if he can remain behind the plate.

After watching his first three starts his stuff looks pretty good, but his lack of control is troubling. He consistently falls behind in the count and throws as many balls as he does strikes. He hasn’t gotten in trouble yet despite these problems, but I don’t think he’ll keep it up.. Are you more optimistic than I am regarding him figuring things out with his command?

by daman316 on Apr 14, 2011 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

Not John but would say you have to consider he's had the bottom of the zone taken away on two of his starts

by odd umpiring, especially against the Angels where he was hitting the zone very well, but Davidson wasn’t giving him a thing. He’s wild, but in that effectively wild category, rather than the can’t hit a barn door type. His last start was very poor though compared to his first two, was struggling in the cold and couldn’t spot his fastball.

It was built around Montero and little else. (David Adams is one of the other names I remember)

The argument will always come down to Montero or Smoak? But even then, you’re talking about Smoak, Lueke who is already one of our better relievers, and Blake Beavan. If Ivan Nova was another name, then he deserves mention too. But Montero v Smoak? Montero is right-handed and that doesn’t play well in Safeco. Unless Montero catches for the next 6 years and rakes, the obvious answer to me is always Smoak and he’s proving to be one of our best hitters already.

It wouldn't affect my opinion and I really hope that it wouldn't affect the vast majority of fans.

Does forgiveness sometimes correlate with production? Sure. I think it helps that his legal troubles came before he was a major leaguer, before he was a Mariner, and few people knew about it until after the trade.

If he starts to struggle, we’ll boo him because he struggles. Not because of what happened in his personal life.

Him and Cortes seemed to develop as key future bullpen pieces at the same time and I wouldn’t treat either of them any differently other than what they do on the field. I hope other fans would do the same.

It is to us!

Even having a league-average bat in our lineup feels like heaven. To have one that’s 24 years old? Dreamy.

Justin Smoak was one of my top 5 favorite prospects BEFORE the Lee trade though, so I’m double-biased.

by Kenneth Arthur on Apr 14, 2011 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Speculation.

I couldn’t speculate on that. You’d be comparing imaginary Seattle Mariner Jesus Montero with imaginary Texas Ranger Justin Smoak with Yankee Montero and Mariner Smoak. Safeco is such an extreme pitchers park and playing for the Yankees in general is so extreme, that I wouldn’t want to guess how they’d do in different situations.

I’m happy with Smoak and I won’t ever look back.

by Kenneth Arthur on Apr 14, 2011 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly.

When Safeco’s your home field, you have to go with the left-handed hitter unless it’s blatantly obvious you should go the other way. Even then, you can’t look at Smoak’s numbers and Montero’s numbers from here on out and compare them without taking team/environment into context. It’s hard for any hitter to play in Safeco and hit in the Mariners’ lineup, while park and lineup are only going to help Montero in NY.

If you want to judge how Safeco might’ve affected Montero, there’s a pretty good hitter playing 3B in Texas that you could look at for comparison’s sake.

by PissedMick on Apr 15, 2011 9:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

I think Justin Smoak’s defensive ability was a big part of the equation also.

Alex Cobb

Does he have a legitimate chance to make the Rays rotation in 2011/2012? Or do they have too many good options already and Cobb gets passed over

by tenags on Apr 14, 2011 1:25 PM EDT reply actions

Rays fan here, so I know the situation pretty well (it is a tough one for John because he probably doesn't have the opportunity to follow each org closely).

He could make it next year, but odds are the Rays would prefer Torres. Of course, this would have to be assuming the Rays trade a starter.

rays

mr. maniac’s analysis seems reasonable to me and matches what i have heard. He is more likely to relieve than start with tampa given present conditions. or end up as trade bait.

Andrelton Simmons

My Braves got 3 high profile players who were billed as SS last year, and somehow the last of the 3 seems to cause the most debate. What’s your take on him? Specifically, what are the things he’d need to do to get into the Iglesias/Profar tier of defensive SS prospects?

by theatlfan on Apr 14, 2011 1:25 PM EDT reply actions

andrelton

Well…what does he need to do to get into that tier? I’m not sure how to answer that. I already think he’s a pretty damn good defender….far more reliable than most SS his age, good range and arm too. I think he’s a very underrated prospect.

Hmmm…good question. Keep in mind this is NOT a “who john thinks is the best prospect at each position” OK? Let’s say I’m trying to develop a team that could actually win a few games..not many, but a few. DOES NOT INCLUDE ANYONE CURRENTLY IN MAJORS

C: Devon Mesoraco
1B: Eric Hosmer
2B: Dustin Ackley
3B: Lonnie Chisenhall
SS: Jose Iglesias
LF: Eric Thames
CF: Mike Trout
RF: Bryce Harper
DH: Jesus Montero

What are your thoughts on Eric Surkamp?

Do you see him maintaining his K/9 rate in the upper minors despite only having a high 80s fastball? He sure had a great AA debut, striking out 10 in 4 innings.

Thanks!

Well….look at it this way.

If a guy has the ratios of a power pitcher, even if he doesn’t throw hard, that’s a good sign. He deserves a full shot at higher levels if he keeps pitching like this, 80s fastball or not.

Not as good as profar, not as much upside. I have felt his offensive potential has been somewhat underrated. Not that he’ll be outstanding, but I think he can be better than people currently expect with the bat.

Brandon Belt

Brandon Belt reminds me a lot of James Loney when Loney came up. Advance hitter, good control of strike zone. People knock Loney for taking too many pitches sometimes and his power hasn’t really kicked in. Do you see similar problems with Belt?
