Did I make a good trade?
I took a lot of flak for the trade I made this past weekend. I think it's a really good deal for my team, but others disagree. I came here to get your opinion. Maybe I'm just crazy.
I traded Matt Cain and Kyle Drabek for Troy Tulowitzki.
Just for background: I'm in a keeper league and my starting pitching consists of King Felix, Verlander, Ubaldo Jimenez, David Price and Roy Halladay. I have Jeter at short, but I need to replace him soon. I also drafted Manny Machado with my first pick this year.
Don't lie to me. If you think I gave up too much, let me know, I can take it. I thought I made a good trade and was going to get a pat on the back from the rest of the guys in the league, instead they all pretty much told me that I gave up too much and Tulo gets hurt too much.
Thanks.

You Smoked Him
And get ready for a bunch along the lines of:
“How in the hell you have Felix, Ubaldo, Halladay, Verlander in Price?…What is this a two team league?”
+1
Tulowitzki is a Top 5 player.
Cain’s very good, but just barely a Top 15 SP. Drabek is unproven and in the AL East.
This is a much better trade for your team.

Great deal for you, but...
Judging by the trade, the lack of acclaim, and your roster – I’d say you need to find a better league.

Echo the above
Easy trade to make, you do it 100 times out of 100
-1 and only member of the Nick Weglarz fan club!
I'd say more like 99 times out of 100
And that 1 time would be if Dice-K is your best starter after Cain. Even then, I’d likely do the trade.
there's got to be a reason why the others think it was too much
whats the setup of the league / are premium SP’s weighed heavily / do injuries cost your anything more than missed AB’s / there cant be too many scenarios where you dont win this league / is Coors park effect adjusted for / ???
ever notice
That they “how did I do …” post are almost always insanely lopsided for the poster? Its less “give me input” and more “Im bragging”.
Don’t get me wrong, Im about to do the same
can I join your league?

Great trade, but I do have to agree with your one quote of

Thanks, guys.
Wow, I guess I’m not off. I felt I was right, but just wanted to make sure I wasn’t losing my touch.
This league has been around since 1974, before most roto leagues were even a spec in the eye of those who founded them. The local newspaper even did an article crediting the league with being one of the first fantasy leagues around.
I’ve been in the league since 1995 (i was 15) I took my lumps, but I’ve learned a lot about prospects through reading John’s books and BA that my team is the most dominate team in the league. I’ve won 4 championships in a row and 6 out of the last 10 years.
Good trades along with good draft picks is what did it. Some of the guys are asleep at the wheel. I got Price 7th overall the year he came out. 2 teams drafted need and picked Matt Antonelli and Asdrubal Cabrera and Price feel to me. Just luck. Drafted King-Felix when he was a baby, traded Miguel Cabrera (whom I drafted in the 8th round one year) for Verlander. Drafted Jimenez a year after the WS in the 7th round, shouldn’t have lasted that long. Traded 2 first round picks for Halladay before he blew up into the pitcher we know today.
I’m not saying I’m great, I just think some of the guys in my league have different strategy. Due to trades, I had 6 picks in the 10th round last year, with 3 of those picks I drafted Wil Myers, Shelby Miller and Brett Jackson. Part of the reason is the 3 option rule our league employs scares many teams away from really young players.
My theory is that if you’re really good, you will make it under 3 options.
Thanks again.
Wow, awesome.
Your team looks crazy-good now.
Let's not get carried away here
While I do agree with everyone that this was a very good trade for you based on your stellar rotation, I wouldn’t call this a screw-job, and can understand why the other guy did this trade even without knowing his roster.
Cain is a very good pitcher, a lock for a WAR over 4, and Drabek has the potential to be an ace. Add to that the fact that in most fantasy set-ups, a SP has more impact on your team than a position player (ie, 3 of 4 pitching stats usually are dominated by your starter’s performance, whereas there are usually 10 position players equally impacting the hitting stats). So if you’re him, and you have a mediocre rotation, getting Cain and Drabek will benefit more than losing Tulo. If you’re you, those two aren’t even in your Top 5, so your team benefited greatly from adding Tulo to your lineup. Sounds like a win-win to me.

Cain is a lock for 4 war...
then wouldn’t Tulo be a lock for 5 War at the most premium position

why would position matter when speaking of WAR
when the main thrust of WAR is to use the value of each position etc.
Would make this trade a million times over
Drabek is an overhyped #2-SP at best. In fantasy, his lack of stronk K/9 numbers throughout his career limits his contribution. Cain has an unsustainable gap between his ERA and FIP, and I expect regression.
If Tulo can stay healthy, he’s a no-question top-5 fantasy player at a premium position, and you traded two #2-at-best-SPs for him without hurting your starting rotation.
Though I have a feeling you knew this and just came on here to surreptitiously show off. ;)
Sure I knew Tulo was a great player, that’s why I traded for him. I honestly was questioning the trade after so many people I talked to said I had given up too much.
I didn’t come here to brag. I thought the trade was a win for both teams. The guy I traded Cain and Drabek to has Jurrgens, Peavy, Latos and pretty much nothing else. As I’m sure you guys know, all 3 of those pitchers are hurt right now.
I can also say I’ve made some bad trades recently which has made me gun shy. Traded Neftali Feliz for Matt Wieters. Traded Chris Perez for Scott Kazmir.
Feliz for Wieters is a bad trade?
That’s a fantastic trade for you.
