Top 50 Prospects for Fantasy in 2011

From Scott White at CBS sports

Link

Actually not a bad list if I do say so myself.  A good mix of long term and immediate impact guys when drafting for a dynasty league.

Just remember that these players are ranked for 2011.  And for fantasy.  That is why Craig Kimbrel is #3.

It's always tough to make these decisions in fantasy for myself.  I mean, take last year for example.  You can draft Buster Posey, but end up paying for it in the first couple of months.  I've always drafted prospects early.  (Last year in my league where we have 6 keepers, I took Jason Heyward first.  So basically in the 7th round.  I tend to look long term too much.)

People could be facing that same decision this year with players like Moustakas and Belt.  I wouldn't say that there's a rookie I'd consider taking in the first round such as I did with Heyward last year.  My first rookie taken would probably be Dom Brown, and I would try to stay away from starting pitching prospects until much later in the draft.

Thoughts on the list?

I'm having a hard time figuring out...

the criteria for the list. It’s obviously not just for this year, because Bryce Harper is #16 and has no chance of making the bigs this year. At the end though, you’ve got guys like Lucas Duda and Brandon Beachy edging out Lowrie, Singleton, Miller, and Turner.

He misses the boat not ranking Montero higher. I’ve always thought Montero’s impact will be even bigger in fantasy, as he’s pretty likely to log the five-to-ten games a year at catcher he’ll need to qualify there for at least a while, even if he doesn’t stick full-time.

I think he handles the closing prospects pretty well. Kimbrel’s got the clearest shot at a job, so it makes sense for him to be high. Walden’s above Jansen clearly because of opportunity more than talent. Jansen’s a guy I think has as much ability to close as any prospect, but the Dodgers are going to want Broxton in that role if at all possible this year. Maybe in 2012 though.

I think if you are drafting in a dynasty league, he is accounting for the fact that Harper is too good to pass up but will cost you over the next couple of years.

I mean, it might depend on the league and what kind of minor league setup the league has, but we are talking about production from Dom Brown almost immediately, compared to Harper maybe not being a viable fantasy option for 3+ years. Same with Trout. But if you’re drafting major league players with minor league players, then I could see the argument for taking an immediate impact versus a long term one and how to balance that.

I don’t know that Montero will be as viable this year as he would next year without some significant injuries. And he’s still very young.

I agree that Lawrie was shafted because he’s close to the majors. Though guys like Singleton, Miller, Turner.. they’re probably still a bit away without the kind of impact Harper will have.. though Beachy? I mean, I’m still not sure he’s anything more than a middle reliever.

Yeah, I mean, I get putting the studs up high.

It’s just odd that he favors replacement-level fantasy players at the bottom (Duda, Beachy) and excludes guys with bright futures.
