"We did a lot of good things last year, and now we've got Julio ... That does nothing but improve the offense, and we expect to do better. That's our goal, to lead the NFL in everything. Every offensive category." -Roddy White

A guy I think should have been selected in the early/mid 20’s. One of the better bets in MILB to post a 20 hr, 40 sb season next year, me thinks.

On Simmons
He’s got a glove that’s at least plus at SS and could eventually be among the best in the league. He won the Carolina Leage batting title by over 20 points, supported by truly elite contact rates, in his first full professional season. He’s got the sort of height where decent (35-40 grade power) isn’t out of the question. Decent chance of becoming a 3+ WAR type SS with the chance for more if power/patience takes a step forward.
No offense
but that was like the 5th time that you’ve posted this argument so I think we (or at least I) get the point.
One of the main points of these threads is to create discussion
I apologize for attempting to actually get a conversation on the relative merits of the different options started. Clearly things would be much better if all anyone ever did was put a +1 below the guy they like right off the bat.
Oh, and FYI, in the very last thread there was someone asking specifically about Simmons and why people put him ahead of Segura, so apparently some people hadn’t seen my comments yet.
What makes him interesting to me
. . and an easy player to make a case for, is that defensive projection. If he really is a s good as advertised, that makes him a pretty good prospect. I’m just not sure though. I have trust issues when it comes to defense because I’ve heard a lot of bullshit reports on players over the years.
However,I’ve said this a lot : That I would trust a player’s, basic, minor league fielding numbers over a whole bunch of divergent reports on his fielding. Andrelton has really outstanding fielding numbers each of the past two seasons.
Youi are getting closer to convincing me on him. I think Jason Bartlett was the best comp yet on this guy. I went with Marte this round though – higher offensive upside and, pretty good defensive value himself.

Fair
Like I said, I didn’t mean to offend. I appreciate the feedback all of the posters provide especially the research and scouting reports. I wish I had the time to do the work but I look at this site as the next best alternative by deferring to the experts. I can respect that you have a high opinion of Simmons and want to get the word out. So I guess I came off a little douchey and for that I apologize.
lol
“No offense” is just code for “I’m about to insult you.”

This is true
. . then again, when I say it, I really do meen it. It’s a way of saying that even though what’s coming isn’t nice, I really don’t meen anything personal by it. How it is recieved depends on who is saying it and, who it is intended for.

I like Simmons
But I can’t put him ahead of Schoop.
by cookiedabookie on Dec 21, 2011 4:28 PM EST up reply actions
I could agree with you there
I’m beginning to like Simmons some but, Schoop looks like a better hitting prospect and has some nice defensive skills as well. They ended the season in the same league, Schoop is 2 years younger.

Is Schoop really seen as a SS longterm?
Hard to understand why they would move him up to the Carolina League where he’s mainly stuck at 2B if they really thought he was going to eventually end up at SS.
Yeah I'm not trying to say Simmons is the only good choice here or anything
I can certainly see the case for the other guys, but considering the support they’re already getting I don’t think they need their case made like Simmons does.
Kolten Wong
Might be worth mentioning that Wong was one of just ten (age-appropriate) full-season hitters to exceed his league OPS by 200 points. And he did so while posting the best BB/K ratio of any of the ten.
Yeah, he’s 5’ 9", but the kid is a real hitter. He mashed with the old and new college bats—-second-best OPS in all college ball last year, when adjusted for home field & conference, per collegesplits.com—-and he mashed while winning the Cape MVP as a 19-year-old, and now he’s mashed in the Midwest League…as in .335, with an isolated slugging almost 50% above the league average.
I have him as one part Ray Durham, one part Dustin Pedroia. Definitely a top 15-20 position prospect.
I like Kolten Wong quite a bit
but calling him part Ray Durham/part Pedroia and a top 15 to 20 position prospect is really overstating things for him IMO.

Wong v. George Springer
Let’s compare the Kamehameha Hammer to community prospect #28, George Springer.
Adjusted for park and schedule, Wong posted an OPS nearly 100 points higher last year, and a wOBA nearly 50 points better.
All while being more than a year Springer’s junior. And while playing middle infield.
And then they were drafted. St. Louis thought highly enough of Wong to send him straight to the pitching-heavy Midwest League, where the average OPS was .693. All he did was rip a hole through the league to the tune of .335/.401/.510…with an outstanding 21/24 BB/K ratio. Looks like one helluva hitter to me.
Nothing to be divined, of course, from Springer’s very brief pro debut. Except to say that it certainly didn’t raise his stock.
Hard to see how Springer is even close to Wong as a prospect, much less ahead of him.
Springer has a solid debut with a low BABIP
33 PA truly means nothing, but he posted a .214 IsoP, 6.1% BB rate, and 6.1% K rate. Again, 33 PA, so it didn’t raise his stock, I’d take those rates all day, every day.
