My next 5

Perhaps to start up more discussion:

Bell, Gose, Singleton, Springer, Yelich

I tend to think about these rankings in terms of who I would value higher in a trade, and I think I would trade Singleton for Gose, but not for Springer, for example. At this point in the rankings, I think the players are really close together.

by gabrielsyme on Dec 2, 2011 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

that's a good way of thinking about it

and really, everyone should be thinking about how a ranking works through that thought experiment

You are too kind. I retract all the mean things I said about your understanding of language.

by gabrielsyme on Dec 2, 2011 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

Wow, you really like Bell huh?

I have no idea how good he really is. He seems like a nice kid, looks tall, and takes a nice-looking BP but, shoot I don’t know. I can see what people like about him though.

I voted Singleton because I think he is likely to be a pretty far above average hitter. I almost voted Yelich but, Im a little more sold on Singletons bat and hazy on exactly how good Yelich is defensively.

Also, I think there are several players who profile as average or near it centerfielders, with the bat at least – Anthony Gose, Gary Brown, Starling Marte, Matt Sczur, George Springer and I like them all, to varrying degrees. I think Mikie Mahtook may be a better hitter than all of those guys though and, he can really play some defense as well. I think he’s an overlooked guy right now.

I tend to think draft rankings give a good idea of the tools of recent draftees, and those rankings put Bell sometimes ahead of, sometimes behind Lindor and Springer, so he ought to be considered in this range. A switch hitter with his power potential is a fairly unique talent. While some of these other guys likely will have more defensive value (Yelich possibly stays in CF, Springer probably does, Gose definitely does), the potential of the bat just beats the snot out of those guys.

it's okay

you don’t need to retract. i didn’t consider it mean anyway.

where i come from, people are constantly attacking (to put it strongly) or debating (to put it lightly) other people’s statements/assumptions. it’s very normal for me, and to me, it just means you have to be more disciplined/rigorous in your logic/word choice.

Well, I might have slightly exaggerated my penitence there. But I’m glad we’re on the right foot, and always happy to engage in good-natured debate.

Singleton

Over the others for me and it’s not that close in my eyes.

by Traindogger on Dec 2, 2011 7:25 PM EST up reply actions

Lot of guys here with strikeout issues (Yelich, Olt, Gose, Castellanos, Gyorko)

Olt is old (but not too old) for his level and hasn’t really solved the K’s yet but the 16.4(!!!)% BB rate + .238 ISO + exceptional defense are just in another category. The collarbone injury is a non-factor for me, except that I’d like to see him play more. He’s the real deal. Yelich seems to have made progress on the K’s but strikeouts + BABIP issues = skepticism. Gose is nice but the K’s keep going in the wrong direction; I don’t know that he’s made any progress on them at all. Castellanos is like Yelich except with more K’s and a higher BABIP with not as good results and only three months younger. He’s nowhere close for me yet. Gyorko is like Olt without the defense or the outstanding plate patience (though it’s not bad). So, of the guys I listed, I’d probably take Olt, Yelich, Gose, Gyorko, Castellanos in that order.

I'm sorry I impugned your cocksmanship.

Didn't

realize 19.6% K rate for Yelich meant he had “strikeout issues.” Heck, according to fangraphs, his K% would have been better than league average in 2010, in the major leagues.

After Yelich

It looks like we are getting into some murky territory, between Gose, Olt, Singleton, and to a lesser extent Bell and Springer. I am predicting a run-off next poll, and probably the one after that.
