"We did a lot of good things last year, and now we've got Julio ... That does nothing but improve the offense, and we expect to do better. That's our goal, to lead the NFL in everything. Every offensive category." -Roddy White

Tough call but I’ll go with the one I liked the most pre-April.

Starling Marte, Jon Schoop, Rymer Liriano & ‘others/testers’ Brandon Jacobs, Marcell Ozuna & Mike Mahtook right there as well.

He’s gonna get overlooked because he’s a shawtayyy without any outstanding tools except for the one: he can hit like nobody’s business. He can play second base. And he’s close to the majors. And he only JUST turned 21. Ignore him at your own peril.

Honest question

What the argument for Andrelton Simmons over Jean Segura, shortstop v shortstop? I know more about Segura than Simmons, so maybe there are tools there in Simmons that make the case. I see in Segura a younger player with significantly more pop and more speed, a good approach, and overall a better offensive package right now, even though he’s half a year younger. And he’s a pretty smooth defensive shortstop. Simmons’s contact rate is impressive, but that doesn’t tip the scales back for me. Is Simmons just a 70 or 80 glove or something? Is there significant power projection in his swing – more than Segura already has?

Granting that I don’t know as much about Andrelton Simmons, I think that given what I do know about them, I take Segura pretty easily.

Simmons future potential with the glove is probably a 70 (perhaps even better)

Minimum of plus range with an arm that’s at least plus-plus (fastball as a reliever in juco touched 98+). Most teams actually seemed to prefer him as a pitcher coming out, noting that he clearly had the best glove for a SS in his draft, but didn’t appear to have the bat to be a positional player. Now that he’s shown promise with the bat, he becomes a pretty intriguing prospect (came in #4 on the Carolina League list from BA this year).

Keep in mind that he also won the Carolina League batting title by over 20 points this year. Maybe the offensive talent was just that bad in the league this year, but I still thinking hitting that much better than anyone else that qualified (and no one with 120+ PA even hit .320, so it wasn’t just guys getting moved up before they qualified) is pretty impressive for a guy in his first full professional season.

As far as Simmons power goes, its tough to tell what he could eventually become. He didn’t hit for much power this year, though the # of 2B and 3B were good. He obviously only hit 1 HR, but Lynchburg is a pretty tough park to hit it out of. He does have the height where you might project possible future power, but he’s got a real skinny frame that he can probably only add 10-15 lbs too. He also currently doesn’t have the approach to hit for power, but again he was incredibly raw when drafted in 2010, so who knows on that front.

Well l like both of them

But I have to give the edge to Segura. (30th on my own list vs. 40th for Simmons)

Segura's a second baseman, at least as a major leaguer.

I’ve seen him at both positions, and I think his skills project better at second.

It is borderline whether to call it for Castellanos or do a runoff, but I think a 3 vote lead isn’t all that overwhelming, especially considering the 3rd place winner is so far behind either. I’m going to run them off.
