Starling Marte vs Leonys Martin
Just to try and interject some consensus among the many, quality centerfield prospects remaining I’d like to argue in favor of Leonys Martin over Starling Marte.
I have no axe to grind. I like Marte and, Martin both but, I saw Martin play a game this season in person and, a few of his games on video from AA and I think we have an interesting contrast here.
I think these two 23 year old players project to have similar skills across the board, except in one, major area. Marte hit .332 in AA and Martin .348, in his brief trial there – both have similar (average, to a tad below) power to my eye – and both are good baserunners but, not impact base stealers – and, though I have not seen Marte play centerfield in person (and I hear he is quite good), I think they are similar defensively because Martin looks good out there himself. The one difference that I see is that Martin takes a lot of pitches, works counts and, will draw walks. Marte is more of an aggressive hitter who doesn’t care to walk. . . to a fairly extreme degree. Now, don’t get me wrong, I like these kinds of players if they are good at it (Sandoval, Cano, Ichiro, Garrett Anderson, ect.) and, Marte may be one of these guys. I am not a WAR head and, I don’t think on-base-percentage is everything . . .
That said, I think Martin will make a lot less outs than Marte and this is a very, very big edge to have on another ballplayer when I don’t think Marte has an edge in another skill to make up for it. Anybody else see these players the same way or . . . differently?

Interesting
So make some good points, and I’ve certainly never seen either in person so it’s some interesting new information.
The one point I might caution on is the hitting – that .348 was in only 135 PAs in AA. The standard deviation is something around .045, which means there’s only so much we can say about his true talent level (the 95% confidence interval is roughly .260-.440). For this reason, I’d want to use his 2011 numbers as whole, which even then were only 335 PAs. And the numbers in the PCL weren;t as impressive. Marte on the other hand, has hit at every level at which he’s played in North America. As you note, there are several other reason to prefer Martin to Marte, but from what I’ve read there are some questions about how well Martin will eventually hit.
I’ve been voting Marte for the past couple rounds, and am going to do so this round – I need to think more about it, and we’ll see going forward.
You make some good points too
I intentionally left out Martin’s AAA performance because I feel like it is the major mark against him here. If he would have stayed in AA he might be on the list already.
I’m not suggesting he’s a .345 hitter but, that performance in AA is as great as the AAA one was bad. I think you are fair to say Marte might hit for a higher average but, I still stay Martin gets on the sacks a lot more and thier other skills are a wash perhaps.
A couple of other points as well : Marte didn’t play AAA ball so we can’t evaluate him from there and . . . to me a big one . . . Martin jumped right into AA ball from Cuba! Marte had parts of four seaon of pro instruction before AA ball.

I think this is a good time
To re-order the tester rankings. The above list is the order that they will be added if there are no corrections made. Even if you have listed your favorites before, please do so again, as likely several of them have been added. Feel free to add anyone that is not on the poll and not in the rotation (all testers plus non-mentioned guys)
*A list of 3-5 or more is MUCH more informative and will be given more weight than naming only 1 guy you like.

Please don't list your overall favorites here, just the ones you want added soon.
If you want to list your next 10 players overall, including guys on the poll and in the rotation, do it in the regular discussion area.

Cory Spangenberg
Matt Dominguez: Hasn’t been mentioned yet, except by me but, I think he is every bit the player Mike Olt is.
James Darnell: Like Lavarnway, I think he is sure to hit, unlike most players left at this point.
Matt Adams: Another unmentioned guy who can’t run but, he can really swing the bat.
Marcell Ozuna
Alex Liddi: I think is underrated and, I have seen play a lot. He looks too big for 3b but, he has worked hard to be solid there and has big power.
Matt Szczur
Christian Bethancourt

Lets add
Ronald Torreyes to my list. I’d like to know what people think of him?
Reds 2b, tremendous results and age (18) in the MWL this season and, nobody thinks he’s a future big leaguer huh?

Why do believe Olt=Dominguez?
not a criticism just an honest question
go long with extenze...i do
by angelsownredsux on Dec 13, 2011 2:42 AM EST up reply actions
Because Mike Olt is older than Dominguez by a year and, Olt was paying at the level Dominguez was at two years ago. Domuinguez’s stats are perceived as dissapointing but, he has been pushed hard.
Olt stats, on thier own, aren’t that great.
The big difference between the two is Mike Olt’s walks and, I’m not as big of a believer in thier importance as others . . . and Dominguez doesn’t have a bad walk rate.
They are both outstanding defensively.
I just see two, similar players, One: who is 22 and played all year in AAA and another: Who is 23 and played all year in A+ ball. Of course his stats are going to look better but, context is important too.

Gary Sanchez voters
I am wondering if you see him projecting to be any more than what Ryan Lavarnway is right now. Lavarnway has a better chance of sticking behind the plate, but Sanchez could get to the same point. Gary’s best tool is his power, but Ryan’s power is better, and is more ML-ready. Ryan walks more, strikes out less and has a higher ISO slugging, and is ready to do it in the majors next year. Granted, Gary has five years to get to where Ryan is right now, but for this prospect list, Ryan Lavarnway should be ahead of Gary Sanchez.

Well, not exactly
I agree with all the stuff you said there ,except the conclusion! If one thinks that Sanchez will get to where Lavarnway is (or, especially, past where he is) then you would vote for him. Most of us would anyway, I think. We may disagree on the players but, most of us are looking at who is going to have the best major league career. Who is better now is nice but, that doesn’t meen they go fist on a list. We are trying to predict the future here. ANYBODY can see that Lavarnway is a better player NOW :)
Even this prospect list isn’t just a list of who is better now. Not how I vote anyways. I could see the merits of saying that Sanchez just won’y become as good of a player as Lavarnway will be though but, that is a different argument.
" Kenny G has a Christmas album out this year. Hey, happy birthday, Jesus! Hope you like crap! " - Norm MacDonald
What I am saying is best case Sanchez is what Lavarnway is now. The problem is he is still far off from AAA, and has some serious concerns with his approach at the plate. He has a lot of potential pitfalls to overcome just to be where Lavarnway is now. If I though he could be better than that, I would be much more willing to consider putting him higher on the list (as it is, I have Sanchez at 25 on my positional list). I just don’t see his ceiling being higher than Lavarnway’s, and Lavarnway is a much safer bet at this point.
by cookiedabookie on Dec 12, 2011 10:06 PM EST up reply actions
Well, when you put it that way . . .
I agree!
I think Lavarnway is going to put up a lot of runs on the scoreboard next season for the Red Sox and, down the line. I think his futuire as a catcher is hazy though.
I’d say Sanchez might be as good good, in a few years but, It’s hard to imagine him being better with the bat I admit . . . and Sanchez s’ is future as a catcher is hazy as well.
" Kenny G has a Christmas album out this year. Hey, happy birthday, Jesus! Hope you like crap! " - Norm MacDonald
And Rosario ...
Should be ahead of both of them by that logic, as he sticks behind the plate (not just a better chance … a certainty) and is even more ML-ready.
Voting Closed
This was a really close race between a whole bunch of people. We’ll run off the top 2, Gary Sanchez and Michael Choice.
