3 spots ahead of Harvey on my personal list.

For me

I love Grandal. Like him solidly more than Brett Jackson who just won the previous poll. His bat should play up in the lineup, his defensive seems to be plus for sure, he’s supposedly has the leadership/game-calling catching qualities that some people seem to think matters.

by auclairkeithbc on Dec 11, 2011 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

Problem is

With Mesoraco in-system ahead of him, you can’t really judge him based on how he slots in the Reds lineup.

by dolley1714 on Dec 11, 2011 1:14 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

That has absolutely nothing

to do with his prospect status. Imagine him in the most favorable situation possible. Or better yet, don’t consider the organization dynamics at all.

by auclairkeithbc on Dec 11, 2011 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

Perhaps it's a matter of opinion

Since I look at prospects based on their utility to the team they’re currently on, and Grandal could basically be trade fodder right now, which knocks him down a peg for me. The reason for this being that, as long as Mesoraco is ahead of him, Grandal really doesn’t have the value he deserves.

by dolley1714 on Dec 11, 2011 3:37 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

?

if a team called up the reds and started making offers, do you think the reds are going to settle for less than his value because they have mesoraco?

It isn't a matter of opinion at all

You can still vote for whoever you’d like though, for whatever reason you want. Some people vote for the prospects from their favorite team. That has nothing to do with their prospect status, but it is equally legitimate as voting for prospects who you think fit into any particular organization well. Neither has ANYTHING to do with who is a better prospect.

by auclairkeithbc on Dec 11, 2011 6:36 PM EST up reply actions

How

doed it make him any less of a prospect based on his team? I guess you could argue if the club has a poor track record of developing catchers or something, but that’s not the situation here.

by CaptainCanuck on Dec 11, 2011 6:40 PM EST up reply actions

Very tough

Similar age, similar draft status, both had very good performance at similar levels in their first full professional seasons.

Leaning Grandal here, because I see them as very similar quality prospects, and pitchers have more injury risk.

by MjwW on Dec 11, 2011 6:45 PM EST up reply actions

Pretty

close. Maybe I’m off here, but it seems to be a bit more upside for Harvey and a better floor for Grandal.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Dec 11, 2011 10:32 PM EST reply actions

Maybe so

But Grandal could be a middle of the order bat as a top defensive catcher. I’m not saying he’ll be quite THAT good, but a really strong #2 pitcher is probably worth less that that. If you see Harvey as legit ace upside (like top 10 pitcher overall potential), then that is a higher upside for sure.

Grandal wins a squeeker by 1 vote.
