Community Positional Prospect #4

With 52.9% of the vote, Jurickson Profar is elected Community Positional Prospect #3.

Like in the early pitching polls, there are quite a few players who have received no votes.  There is no real desperate effort to get anyone new on the poll right now, so instead of removing the zero vote getters from the list at this time, I'll just add Francisco Lindor who seems like the most requested add.  Hopefully by next poll, but soon enough, I'll be moving players who fail to get a decent number of votes into a rotation of off-list players.  At first, they'll just stay off for 1 poll (maybe two if that is needed logistically), but eventually that rotation will have a bit of a longer waiting period.

RESULTS:

Jurickson Profar: 52.9%

Jesus Montero: 19.1%

Devin Mesoraco: 10.3%

Manny Machado: 8.8%

Anthony Rendon: 5.9%

Nolan Arenado: 2.9%

Travis D'Arnaud: 0%

Will Myers: 0%

Bubba Starling: 0%

Miguel Sano: 0%

CANDIDATES: Jesus Montero, Devin Mesoraco, Manny Machado, Anthony Rendon, Nolan Arenado, Travis D'Arnaud, Will Myers, Bubba Starling, Miguel Sano, Francisco Lindor

TESTERS: Anthony Rizzo, Jake Marisnick, Xander Bogaerts, Hak-Ju Lee, Oscar Tavares, Yonder Alonso

#01 - BRYCE HARPER - 59.2%

#02 - MIKE TROUT - 38.8% (of #1 poll)

#03 - JURICKSON PROFAR - 52.9%

In what St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa called a "big day" for his club, starter Chris Carpenter took the mound for his first session of live batting practice and promptly buzzed the fuzz on catcher Jason LaRue’s chin with an errant fastball.

"Sorry," Carpenter called from the mound.

"Don’t say you’re sorry," LaRue barked back.

"He said it," pitching coach Dave Duncan said from the side of the cage, "but he didn’t mean it."

First five for me were

Trout, Harper, Profar, Mesoraco, Machado. Won’t be hugely upset if Machado wins here.
As a Yankees fan, I am wondering why people have Montero ahead of Mesoraco? I can’t imagine that Montero’s bat is so great as to outweigh Mesoraco’s ability to play an above average catcher. I think Montero could make it a catcher, but I do not think he will be given much of a chance, and I learned last year not to have what you think should happen push your vote to much away from what will probably happen (i.e. Sale and Chapman as starters).

by cookiedabookie on Nov 8, 2011 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

Prospect Status

Shouldn’t be affected by team-related decisions.

by auclairkeithbc on Nov 8, 2011 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

True.

But did anyone really think that Chapman would survive and flourish as a starter? I have much more hope that Montero can be a solid defensive catcher.

by mr. maniac on Nov 8, 2011 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

Right

I mean if you personally don’t think Chapman could be a starter, then of course that is important. The same is true of Montero depending on your own views of his abilities.

by auclairkeithbc on Nov 8, 2011 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

Possibly

I would have liked to see them give him a legitimate chance.

by Jeff Reese on Nov 8, 2011 6:26 PM EST up reply actions

They are

. . . this year. He went to the AFL to get stretched out as a starter or, did I already miss the Reds changing thier mind?

by casejud on Nov 8, 2011 6:28 PM EST up reply actions

We'll see what comes out of it

I’m not sure it’s viable at this point (sort of like Neftali Feliz last spring where they already blew their opportunity). I don’t think he’d be able to start without developing a change-up in the minors first, and I don’t see the Reds giving him that time there.

by Jeff Reese on Nov 8, 2011 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

Wasn't he already injured?

Probably will scare the Reds into keeping him in the pen.

by cookiedabookie on Nov 8, 2011 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

I voted

for Machado, because I think with even the small possibility that it is, the potential for him to stick at SS with that bat gives him massive value.

But onto catchers. Am I the only one I guess who likes D’Arnaud better than Mesoraco?

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Nov 8, 2011 2:08 PM EST reply actions

No, me too

As far as your Travis D’Arnaud-Devin Mesoraco query goes..

Manny Machado has plenty of arm & good hands too. His ‘actions’ are reportedly very strong & his instincts will help him where his relative lack of range due to being such a big guy might otherwise be a hindrance.

I think he sticks (at least initially) yet even if he’s a third baseman, Machado is a Top 10 prospect in all of baseball/Top 5 position player prospect to me. I really high in his offense from what I’ve been able to discern & think his glove would be super at third if necessary. My order here would be Bryce Harper-Mike Trout-Jesus Montero (think he’s a very safe bet to be very, very good offensively & soon)-Jurickson Profar-Machado for what that’s worth.

by Matt0330 on Nov 8, 2011 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

i like

Mesoraco’s plate discipline profile more than D’Arnaud’s

by blue bulldog on Nov 8, 2011 5:31 PM EST up reply actions

Mesoraco vs. D'Arnaud

I think is a great debate that I would love to hear both sides on. I’ve been struggling with this one a lot myself, obviously they are both very good catching prospects and would love to have either in my system if I’m a GM.

if you need to drop him for a bit, so be it. But, not for too long as I am going to start getting interested in voting for him very soon.

by Dalman on Nov 8, 2011 2:44 PM EST reply actions

anyone that gets dropped this early

will be back asap, missing 1 round or 2 max. later on, there will be more players in the loop so it will take 3 or 4 rounds to get back on.

by auclairkeithbc on Nov 8, 2011 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

Arenado

With all of the reports on Arenado’s improved defense at 3rd – to even now being a plus defender there, I am surprised he isn’t getting more attention given his age/performance.

by Traindogger on Nov 8, 2011 4:37 PM EST reply actions

Hang on

He’s not far off for me actually (then again, I’ve been a little more confident about his defensive aptitude than some it seems prior to Arizona so nothing really has changed personally for me re:Arenado). I’d have him sixth or seventh overall when considering the whole field of position players with rookie eligibility remaining.

by Matt0330 on Nov 8, 2011 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

WoW

I like Arenado a lot but, I’m not sure about 6th ort 7th. I do tend to agree with you two guys quite a bit. I’m thinking around 15 or so but, I’ll keep an open mind. I really, really like him a lot.

I was impressed with John Manuel during the rising stars game talking about a coach who talked about being really, really impressed with Arenado’s command of the strike -zone, which was supposed to be his other weakness (besides fielding).

It’s funny how really young and, really talented athletes tend to erase weaknesses, isn’t it?

New voting method.

Why not just rec the player? Wouldn’t it be a lot easier to count instead of counting all the “1,1,1,1”?

by MilesC on Nov 8, 2011 11:49 PM EST reply actions

People can rec as many candidates as they choose

There isn’t a way to limit people to rec only on choice on the poll, it was a problem two years ago when we tried it. The only way to ensure an accurate vote is to use the +1 method.

Well

We’ll certainly run this for the full 24 hours. I am not sure if we had an exact percentage difference to determine runoffs last year, but I think it is usually pretty obvious.

by auclairkeithbc on Nov 9, 2011 10:14 AM EST up reply actions

I'm closing this poll

There will be a runoff between Machado and Mesoraco as they are separated by only 1 vote.
