Community Positional Prospect #3

With 59.2% of the vote, Bryce Harper is elected Community Positional Prospect #1.  Because of the unusual nature of the vote, where 98% went to the top two vote-getters and it wasn't a crazy blowout for the #1 vote-getter (like Matt Moore in the pitchers poll), we are going to place Mike Trout as the Community Positional Prospect #2.  Quite a few people were in favor of this and no one objected, so hopefully this is not going to be a controversy.

Normally we'll be eliminating some of the players with very few votes, but with two players garnering 98% of the vote, it is tough to make any eliminations.  We'll make eliminations next time, so don't worry.

RESULTS:

Bryce Harper: 59.2%

Mike Trout: 38.8%

Jurickson Profar: 2.0%

Devon Mesoraco: 0%

Manny Machado: 0%

Anthony Rendon: 0%

Jesus Montero: 0%

Travis D'Arnaud: 0%

Will Myers: 0%

Bubba Starling: 0%

CANDIDATES: Jurickson Profar, Devon Mesoraco, Manny Machado, Anthony Rendon, Jesus Montero, Travis D' Arnaud, Will Myers, Bubba Starling, Miguel Sano, Nolan Arenado

TESTERS: Anthony Rizzo, Jake Marsnick, Xander Bogaerts, Francisco Lindor, Hak-Ju Lee, Oscar Tavares

#01 - BRYCE HARPER - 59.2%

#02 - MIKE TROUT - 38.8% (of #1 poll)

In what St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa called a "big day" for his club, starter Chris Carpenter took the mound for his first session of live batting practice and promptly buzzed the fuzz on catcher Jason LaRue’s chin with an errant fastball.

"Sorry," Carpenter called from the mound.

"Don’t say you’re sorry," LaRue barked back.

"He said it," pitching coach Dave Duncan said from the side of the cage, "but he didn’t mean it."

Francisco Lindor is very, very good

Did you hear Parks and KG discuss Lindor on the recent podcast?

Holy cow! I remember the reports being ok going into the draft, but there is now talk he might be a better prospect than Profar. I’ve got me some reading up to do.

by guru4u on Nov 8, 2011 10:17 AM EST up reply actions

I did

Parks positevly raved about how Lindor looked at instructs and, said the scouts there did as well. It also confirmed what my eyes saw pre-draft. He doesn’t have a lot of pro data but, he rstill reminds me of how people were looking at Profar before last season – liking but not wanting to stick him high in the rankings.

I think he should be right up near the top but, I wouldn’t go so far as to say he is “better than Profar”.

Lindor

I’m not ready to put him that high either, but certainly his upside sounds higher than Profar’s upside. I just thought of him as a glove-first SS that will stick at the position but did not have a premium bat. The scouting reports from the time he worked out for Seattle to now make those old reports appear quite understated in terms of his potential.

Should we list our testers like a list?

Or do a line for each one so people can vote for them? I can’t remeber If we vote for testers at all or, just list them . Just curious.

by casejud on Nov 8, 2011 2:04 AM EST up reply actions

Normally it's just listing them

I think you run into potential confusion asking for votes that way, people might not pay attention to anything other than the player’s name and think they were voting for him on the poll as opposed to voting for a tester spot.

Montero

I think it makes sense to have him over Profar, just because of league readiness and potential upside with the bat, even if not at catcher. Profar could be the total package but is unlikely to have a game-changing bat like Montero, and he’s too far away, especially seeing as he hasn’t even played in A ball yet.

Montero is a DH

Who may be able to play 1B but will never get the opportunity unless he’s dealt. He will need to hit the hell out of the ball to be valuable. He has that kind of offensive potential, but the margin for error with Profar is significantly larger.

Profar just finished dominating the SAL as an 18 year old, by the way (not that that fact alone means much of anything).

by Jeff Reese on Nov 7, 2011 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

Actually

Not sure if you caught the 2011 season, but Profar played the whole year in A ball. And quite well, at that.

by BryceHarper on Nov 7, 2011 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

Montero looks like the next Billy Butler, while Profar looks like the next Jimmy Rollins
There is nothing wrong with being a Billy Butler but, Rollins was an MVP.

by casejud on Nov 8, 2011 1:48 AM EST up reply actions

Rollins was a terrible choice for MVP

Not sure you want to rest your argument on that.

by cookiedabookie on Nov 8, 2011 9:16 AM EST up reply actions

What? lol

He was huh? The Shortstop has 380 total bases, scores 139 times, hits 30 bombs, drives in 94, and wins the gold glove? There must have been a lot of great players that year if he was a terrible choice. That looks like an amazing season to me CDB.

Even if he wasn’t the real MVP, he still played solid SS and played league average offense – for a player, not a SS – for 12 seasons and, I think is a reasonable upside comp for the kind of player that Profar could become.

" I too love everthing that flows: rivers, sewers, lava, blood, bile, words, sentences . ." - Henry Miller

"Terrible" may be a bit of hyperbole

But there were at least five candidates better than him:
Wright, Pujols, Utley, Holliday, and Chipper.
The fact that Holliday was the only one that even received a first place vote was ridiculous.

by cookiedabookie on Nov 8, 2011 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

I'm closing this poll.

With 52.9% of the vote Jurickson Profar is the pretty clear winner.
