Community rating-last year's rookies #1
I know the communitity prospect list has also just kicked off, but that will be going far too long for it to make any sense to wait for that to finish before starting this one. This is the third year in a row we have done this, and we'll be doing it essentially the same way as last year, by +1 voting. The idea is to look at the group of players who used up their rookie status last year, and as a result are no longer "prospects" and rate them for expected future performance. Obviously, that is a somewhat different criteria than is used in rookie of the year voting, and typically our voting, focused on future performance, has come up with very different results than the ROY voting.
The obvious place to start iin trying to find a #1 player for this list is the players who were at the top of our and John's prospect lists last year and who had strong debuts. Moustakas, Hosmer, Freeman, Ackley, Lawrie, Jennings, and Kipnis (among hitters) and Hellickson, Pineda, Sale, Chapman and Kimbrel (among pitchers) seem like the best fits and will make up the initial ballot.
I'm certainly not forgetting Danny Espinosa, Wilson Ramos, Jordan Walden, Kyle Drabek, Zach Britton, Jemile Weeks, and Mark Trumbo who will be among the early testers and there is another group I'm looking at soon after that. If you think they deserve a vote now you can add them below, but I'm guessing that if we cycle them in for the coming rounds they'll be in early enough.
As has been discussed in the community prospect list poll, the general idea will be to drop players who get less than 5% of the vote, but especially in the beginning I am going to use some discretion on that if one or two players get the vast majority of the votes. We'll try to keep runoffs to a minimum, but especially early on I won't hesitate to use them if voting is very close and we can't tell who would likely have won a head to head vote.
So, who is your number 1 prospect for future performance among last year's rookies?
