I know...

I am among the biggest Arendo boosters on here, but Adam Foster at Project Prospect calls him a top 10 overall prospect right now.

agreed

this shouldn’t even be close.

by Los Gueros on Nov 19, 2011 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

Personally

I am surprised Taillon isn’t running away with it. Maybe people are really super split on Taillon/Bundy/Hultzen, but I’d guess 80% of people would take at least one of those 3 pitchers (the 3 that were in that tight 3-way runoff), over Arenado.

by auclairkeithbc on Nov 19, 2011 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

interested in an explanation as to why

arenado can stay at 3rd, had a big year (albeit in the cal league and the AFL), and projects as a middle of the order run producer. i wasn’t blown away by what taillon did in the sally.

by Los Gueros on Nov 19, 2011 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

Well

I don’t think any of those 3 pitchers got on the list because of statistics. They are all A- types probably, with the top 2 having potential ace stuff. Arenado had a nice year, and was already considered my many to be quite a nice prospect. I was expected some people to be really high on him, but I figured the typical voter would just see him as a nice B+ prospect, and go for the upside pitcher. My argument was that I thought Taillon would win this poll easily, not that Taillon is FAR AND AWAY better, but it looks like I might be wrong.

by auclairkeithbc on Nov 19, 2011 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

So you are saying ...

You don’t think Arenado is an A- prospect? He was a B+ according to Sickels before this season and the AFL. When you have two A- prospects, one a hitter and one a pitcher … you take the hitter, especially if he plays a premium position like 3B.

by Traindogger on Nov 19, 2011 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

3B

is a premium position? It’s clearly on a different level than 1B, and corner OF spots, but its more on the level of 2B, and not on the same level of the three true premium positions, C, SS, and CF.

Your point still stands though. The dude is young, mashes the ball, and looks like he can stick at a position that’s not 1B or LF/RF. He’s exciting, but I think his upside is a few all-star games, while Taillon’s is Cy Young winning. I could be wrong though.

CF/3B/2B all grade out about the same value wise.

They all get a 2.5 run adjustment in WAR constructs.

Defense at 3B was overlooked for a long time.

You’ll still see people expect a 3B to hit more like a 1B than a 2B because for years that was the norm.

by gatling on Nov 20, 2011 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

It's

not 3B. I understand 3B is valuable, as valuable as 2B. It’s that those two are as valuable as CF.

My gut still has a problem with that, but I’m sure the research is thorough, so I’ll have to force my mind to accept it.

by McCutchenIsTheTruth on Nov 20, 2011 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

Gotcha

That’s a little different than the usual objection I tend to see. I guess I’ve always sort of tied CF and 2B together without much thought because if a player is moving off of 2B it’s many times to CF(Biggio, rumors on both Weeks brothers over the years, etc).

Eh

mine is probably team based. Cutch in CF and Walker at 2B. Not even remotely in the same class as far as athletes.

I guess that's where we differ

I’m not sold that Arenado is a lock to be a “middle of the order run producer”. He seems more of a 6 or 7 hitter that has an outside shot to hit in the middle of the order.

I am an upside guy, and I would take Taillon’s upside any day of the week. Arenado is more of a fav of the numbers geeks.

by guru4u on Nov 19, 2011 11:03 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I don't know

I’ve been a big supporter of Arenado but, now I wonder if he isn’t just a prospect who is hot right now.

I love the age, the numbers and now, the glove but, when I watch him I wonder if I am looking at a David Wright or a Scott Rolen with the bat or, more of a .290 .350 .450 kind of guy, in a neutral park.

That’s a heck of a player but, I’m not sure I don’t like JTs upside a bit more. It’s a risk but, I just don’t feel like Taillon’s will get injured. I can see taking Arenado but, I like JT.

Agreed

I don’t know how Arenado lasted so long in the Positional vote as well. In my mind he is a better prospect than Machado, Rendon, and Will Myers.

by LetsGoMets413 on Nov 19, 2011 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

I'll give you Myers if you are really critical of his performance last year

But I do not see Arenado higher than Machado, or Rendon. Machado has a similar bat (less, but projectable) and better defense higher on the defensive spectrum. Rendon was considered a no doubt bat until his shoulder injury, and still put up an amazing year at Rice. Arenado is good, and I have him at #12 on my positional prospect list, but top ten is defensible. I think there is a bit of over-hyping going on with him right now.
