Might be a better hitter than Arenado. Just think what kind of “lucky” numbers Oscar would have put up in the Cal League?

Mahtook

He’s getting close for me. Unbelievable all around college game, even with the new bats. And hitting very well in the AFL. It’ll be interesting to see how he handles high A (I image that’s where he’ll start). Could move quickly through the system. Seems polished already, but pretty underated.

Arenado v Tavares v Sano

Arenadfo or, the underrated Hak Ju Lee would be worthy choices here but, I think Osacar Tavares stacks up just as well, if not better, as a hitter and will be a good RF as well.

Miguel Sano looks like a hell of a power prospect but, Appy League stats do not translate well up the line. Just take a look at the pitchers there and, tell me if you recognize any of them? Sano also has very similar numbers to what Cody Johnson did there in 2007. He had/has a lot of power too but, just too much whiff and miss.

Arenado's

numbers were good, no doubt. But THIS good? Having a 10% K rate, and a decent BB rate, is fantastic at age 20. Other numbers get inflated a bit in the CALL. But overall, he was a very good young hitter- he’s done great in the AFL. But there are still concerns about final position, and his D has always lagged behind his bat. That to me drops him below some more established prospects like Jackson and Choice that have all but allayed concerns about their future positional home while continuing an up trend with the bat(Choice playing CF over Gose in the AFL was a signal that he’s there to stay).

by Mike Kaluk on Nov 15, 2011 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

The glove

I agree with you about Choice but, I think you might not feel the same about Arenado’s defense had you seen him in the AFL. He has looked very good, to the eye.

After Arenado here...

It becomes a lot less clear to me who should be next and in what order. Right now I have Starling, Sano, Rizzo, Bogaerts, Marisnick, Gose, Grandal, Jackson, Lindor, Gary Brown as my next ten.

What do you have against Tavares?

You have a guy who hasn’t proved he can hit at Tavares level in Sano, then a guy who didnt hit as well in the same league in Marisnick. Just curious.

Taveras

I like Taveras, he’s prob within the next 3 for me, and I might be guilty of underrating him a bit. I’m not too concerned about the hamstring problems at this point, and no doubt he’s shown the ability to hit like crazy so far, but I don’t think the he has the all around package of Marisnick, a legit 5-tool prospect, or crazy power of Sano. That being said, he’s a definite top 100 prospect (prob right around 50 overall for me) with high upside, just like those other guys a bit more at this point.

by BenMc5 on Nov 15, 2011 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

Thats fair

I could be missing the boat a tad on Marisnick myself. When I look at video he looks like a good hitter and, he ereally came on in 2011. Then again I also read a lot of comparisons to Jeff Francoer (as an athlete, not a hitter) and reports that put him in RF and maybe not a plus CF.

I’m also convinced that not only will Tavares hit but, rthat he will have crazy power also.

by casejud on Nov 15, 2011 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

Marisnick sticking in CF

The reports on his CF defence right now have been wholly positive: the question is whether he’ll continue to add strength and thereby slow down, forcing a move to RF. There’s no doubt that’s a risk, but he’s got enough speed now that I think he sticks in CF for at least the first half of his career.

Comps to Frenchy

I’ve also read comparisons between Franceour and Starling as athletes. In both Starling’s and Marisnick’s cases, I hope they turn out to have a better approach and more success at the plate.

"When the going gets tough, the tough get going."

by BenMc5 on Nov 15, 2011 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

They both should have better speed than Francoeur, at least. And Marisnick is already walking at a respectable rate, so there’s that.

by gabrielsyme on Nov 15, 2011 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

not too hard for me at the moment

I’m not sure how my next three including Arenado play out, but I do know that if Arenado gets on, I only have two Grade A- position players remaining (Lee and Marisnick).

Grade B+ players . . .Christian Yelich and Michael Choice stand out.

Looking it over, there really aren’t all that many Grade B+ position player prospects this year. Sano sure, impact power bat. Lindor, love him, although probably the last guy I have on the B+ pecking order. Grandal looks good. Gose is a maybe, contact is a pretty glaring issue. Springer’s talent is worthy of the grade. Nick Franklin? Maybe, although I think he’s going to end up more as a solid middle infielder than a true plus. A few others I suppose, but definitely top heavy this year with the bats.

by mrkupe on Nov 16, 2011 4:57 AM EST up reply actions

How is Alonso

Not a B+? His floor is at least as high as half the current major league 1st basemen.

by auclairkeithbc on Nov 16, 2011 9:26 AM EST up reply actions

not necessarily

I didn’t think of him, but he’d have a chance at being B+.

by mrkupe on Nov 16, 2011 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

We've been over this . .; .

. . . but, how and, why you would leave Oscar Tavares off of list of potential, impact hitters is beyond me Kupe. He has just as good of defensive tools as Arenado and, don’t you think he might have done ok in the Cal League too?

" It's never just a game when you're winning" - George Carlin

by casejud on Nov 16, 2011 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

you already know plenty of reasons why I would leave him off

But here’s another in a direct comparison with Arenado: command of the strike zone.

That said, I don’t really care to discuss Taveras further at the moment.

by mrkupe on Nov 16, 2011 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

Xander Bogaerts vs Oscar Taveres

I like Bogaerts a ton, I do. The only thing he did better than Tavares last year is hit home runs though – and that in a park that is very good for that (120 factor for righties, hit 10 of 16 bombs at home)..

OT hit twice as many doubles, twice as many triples, and a million more singles. Xander also walked a bit less and, struck out quite a bit more.

I could see basing things on scouting or projection but, Xander doesn’t appear to run bhetter than Oscar and, has just as many defensive questions.

We are left with them as hitters and, all I see is the same fallacy – that you can wipe away .130 points of batting average based on the idea that Oscar was lucky and doesn’t have power. I like Xander’s power potential a lot but, Tavares is miles ahead as a complete hitter and his .198 ISO ijn the MWL is no joke. There is a lot of power in that swing.

Why exactly are people rating Arenado so highly?

He OPSed about .836 in an extreme hitter’s league and has questionable defense. I voted Sano, whose K rate scares me, but at this point he’s the only one with a shot of getting there.

arenado

A lot of it is groupthink, honestly . . .there were a few people around here on him during the season, but a whole lot more than that were poking holes in his numbers and suggesting he had a poor chance of sticking at 3B. A couple of good reports come in, and boom, the guy went from being a Grade B prospect for many to being a near-consensus Grade A-.

I’ve been praising him for a while, so I’ll give my own POV. He’s been a consistently underrated pure hitter, and while he doesn’t walk much at this point, that’s been on the rise and he barely strikes out. That’s pure hitting skill that you can project on right there. He’s not a slugger and neither his build nor approach are geared for that role, but he’s young enough to get stronger and he should find plenty of XBHs down the line. I’m expecting a good power year for him next year in Tulsa and perhaps Colorado Springs, but against major league pitching I think the power numbers will move upwards steadily as he gains experience.

Defensively, I thought the talk about him moving off 3B was overblown, and that seems to be playing out to his benefit. Now it seems like he’s getting rave reviews over there, which is pretty neat but I think some caution is warranted; just as negative reports can often read too much into small samples, so positive reports can be guilty of the same. I think it is reasonable to expect average or slightly above average defense.

So, excellent pure hitter with good command of the strike zone, youth to project further improvement, a solid glove, and by all accounts a strong work ethic. Makes for a very nice prospect. I wouldn’t mind hearing gatling weigh in on this though . . .I know he’s been a strong Arenado skeptic and he’s made a good case for his opinion in the past.
