Community Pitching Prospect #6 RUNOFF

Danny Hultzen and Gerrit Cole both finished with 18 votes in the open poll (24.3% each), and will now face each other in the runoff to determine Pitching Prospect #6.  The next highest vote-getter had only 10 votes (13.5%), so it is pretty clear that these two need to battle it out head to head.

PITCHING PROSPECTS TO DATE:

#01 - MATT MOORE - 91.0%

#02 - JULIO TEHERAN - 57.3%

#03 - SHELBY MILLER - 66.7%

#04 - TREVOR BAUER - 40.0%

#05 - TYLER SKAGGS - 30.0%

Voted for Cole

but I think it’s too high for either guy at this point. I’d take Pomeranz, Turner, Parker, and Walker over both of these guys.

Seems like the community

Is going to probably put on Cole, Hultzen and Bundy before the guys with more experience. It is an interesting debate. I think it comes down to people maybe seeing the guys you like as strong B+ types or borderline B+/A- maybe and HOPING the Bauer, Cole, Hultzen and Bundy can prove to be A- types.

by auclairkeithbc on Nov 11, 2011 3:22 PM EST up reply actions

I have little doubt that Cole and Hultzen will get off to strong starts next season.

Not that I have doubts about the other guys per se, but I don’t think we’ll look dumb for putting these two guys this high.

Agreed. These two are further from MLB ready than those 4 and less of a sure thing

Well, maybe Cole

. . . but, I’d say Danny Hultzen is practically the deffinition of big league ready.

Though I voted for Hultzen … think Cole has a high bust factor. Folks seemed to get enamored with what a pitcher might do as opposed to what he has done.

by Traindogger on Nov 11, 2011 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

i really thought

Hultzen was going to run away with this based on his previous turnout

just shows it’s hard to predict how voting patterns shift

by blue bulldog on Nov 11, 2011 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

I expected Cole to actually take it, at least make it a race

It seems like Hultzen fans are especially high on him compared to everyone else (not insanely so, but he has a small but strong group of supporters here). I think Cole fans aren’t too much higher on him than most people here. It is something I’ve gathered since draft-time. Hultzen support hasn’t grown that much in the past few polls. As a separate point, I wonder how much we would even want to weigh intense support if that was something easily achievable. I am not looking to change things, just curious what really best reflects the community consensus.

by auclairkeithbc on Nov 11, 2011 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

i don't think

there is really an easy solution to these voting power/game theory problems. any sort of modification would just lead to other problems arising imo

i think the way you’ve been doing it is good enough, and will get us close enough to the community consensus that any marginal gains in a different method are probably not worth the hassle of developing/getting everyone to understand such a new method

by blue bulldog on Nov 11, 2011 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

I'm just one guy

. . . but, I voted for Hultzen because I am not high on Cole so, I’d be carefell drwing that conclusion AK. Lets just see how it plays out?

by casejud on Nov 11, 2011 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

Well, I wasn’t talking about why people were voting on Hultzen in the runoff. There are plenty of reasons for that to happen. But in poll #4, Hultzen had 12 votes and Cole had none. You haven’t voted on him in an open poll yet. So obviously you aren’t one of the voters that is especially high on Hultzen. I’m not suggesting that everyone who isn’t an enthusiastic Hultzen guy is definitely going to like Cole more than him either. I just have a feeling that is generally the case.

Have Taillon ahead of both

But Hultzen (7) and Cole (8) are back to back on my list, and quite close. I wouldn’t be upset with either at this point. I give Hultzen the edge due to, as others have said, his better command, and being more ML-ready.

Not even close imo

Hultzen 100% for me

Really?

Burnett had filthy filthy stuff, he just never learned to harness it at an elite level. That’s similar to what we saw from Cole, but we saw it out of a 21 year-old as a Junior in college. We’ve seen it out of Burnett for years. Cole can certainly do a better job of harnessing his stuff to produce at an elite level.

If Cole does, then I’m not sure who we’re comparing him to. Verlander? Strasburg? Johan Santana (alleged fastball/changeup combo that Cole has). That’s obviously extremely high praise and very unlikely to happen, but he’s not A.J. Burnett just yet.

My thought process

First I am a mariner fan and I have Hultzen as my #2 M’s pitching prospect

But with regards to these too, 5 months ago nearly every reputable prospect source had Cole as a top 3 prospect with Hultzen around #6-8. The only thing they have done is throw limited AFL innings since then so why would we change their order now? 2 rising stars innings can’t sway your opinion that much

by VanillaGorilla on Nov 11, 2011 6:20 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Top three in the draft? Top 3 overall?

Presumably the former, right? On that front, not “every reputable source” by any stretch, preferred Cole. Seems like I’ve seen just about as many Hultzen supporters as Cole supporters, reputable and otherwise.

Hultzen: better command and polish, plenty of stuff from the left side, looks like he’ll be at least a legit #2 soon. Cole is more of a gamble. Plenty of hard-throwing guys with questionable command flame out.

by Brownson on Nov 11, 2011 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

Cole

Yes I meant in the draft not overall prospect. But I think BA, Keith Law, BP and Sickles all had Cole over Hultzen. Obviously that isn’t everyone but those are the major sources most people use. I just wonder if we would have ranked these two on June 1st what the consensus would have been. I would guess it would have been Cole by a decent margin. Most people had Hultzen as the #4 P in the draft and he is possibly the 2nd one off the board here if he wins this

by VanillaGorilla on Nov 11, 2011 7:26 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Cole should be higher.

I like him better than Bauer. Skaggs should be 4.

Cole 5.

I like a few of these guys better than Bauer honestly:

Hultzen
Pomeranz
Harvey
Perez
